All PS Vitas $199 at Target August 18-24

[UPDATE] Price cut confirmed for 3G and WiFi systems.

[UPDATE] The Target weekly ad for August 18-24 released today confirms the price cut. All PlayStation Vita systems are $199 through the end of the week.

The original story is below

All PlayStation Vita systems will be marked down to $199 at Target beginning August 18 and running through August 24, according to a leaked Target advertisement obtained by Blu-ray Forums.

No Caption Provided

The ad specifies that "all PS Vita game systems" will be marked down. The handhelds currently retail for $250 for the Wi-Fi version and $300 for the 3G model.

Neither Sony nor Target were immediately available to comment.

The PS Vita received a price cut in Japan in February, but Sony said in February that no such price drop would be extended to North America due to exchange rates and other factors.

Decisions about price drops are made on a region-by-region basis, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida said at the time.

I don't know at this point there isn't anything on the system that I want to play. When the first PSP came out there was a ton of software i wanted to play on it... FF7 Crisis Core, (its crowning achievement if you ask me.) was one of my all time favorite games on that little Hand held.. not to mention the God of war games... Silent Hill, MGS Acid, Mgs P.O., Peace Walker, Kingdom Hearts... there was just a lot of reason to want one... unfortunately that isn't the case with the Vita.

I'd rather get a Nintendo Wii U at this point, and thats not saying much.

Its a shame really, the Vita is a fantastic piece of kit and I can only imagine its capabilities later on when developers get more confident, I hope for the sake of Handhelds that a title comes along to bolster its sales and make it a worthwhile endeavor for Sony.

I loved the PSP when I got one mine in 07' and continue to use it even now granted mostly for emulation but also for the games it had on its own.

Sadly though the price just deters people, even I bought a 3DS over saving for Vita but only really because of Pokémon X/Y other then that I'm not that interested in the 3DS line up. Something else that's note worthy is that the money you spend on a Vita will add up to the same as getting a 3DS + a good amount of games for it because the 3DS games are bloody expensive in comparison to PSVita titles.

Anyone waiting on memory cards should wait till the sony gamescom conference as there have been rumors of price cuts going all around.

It seems tempting but I know there is a new version of this system around the corner. I just know there is. March next year they will announce a new version of the Vita that will probably launch in September 2014. I just can't get a Vita now knowing that there will be a new one so soon.

Memory cards as still too expensive. And those that buy the 3G are stuck on AT&Terrible and have to pay deep out their colon for crappy service. Still not worth it.

@Nintyfan95 Because if they drop it then it will make it look like a failure. They are trying to create an illusion that its such a great machine.

@greenpolyp @Nintyfan95 poor desperate Sony, droping their price in order to compete with the so called "inferior" 3DS. Now I'll admit that a one week sale at Target is not a big deal, but the article does mention a price cut in Japan. I'm guessing that was a "permanent" price cut.

@innocent69 @greenpolyp @Nintyfan95 I dont know why sony just wont cut the price of the memory sticks. When the PS3 came out it took a 800 dollar loss with each PS3. Though that information came from Sony.

@greenpolyp @Nintyfan95 All gaming hardware comes down in price over time. 3DS...Xbox...PS3, etc. And sales numbers are readily available...the Vita IS a flop.

The hardware is decent but they aren't going to get support from developers until more units have been sold. Meanwhile, lack of good games (and price!) leaves consumers with no reason to buy.

This isn't rocket science, Sony.

I was very tempted to buy one and went to Target last night. It said "limited stock" but they had at least one available. I didn't pick it up.

$50 isn't a huge saving tbh and I think the system is still overpriced along with the ridiculous memory pricing.

I'll buy the system if it is for $149 with 4GB bundled or $199 with Wifi (3G not needed for me) and 32GB and bundled with a game. Else there's not much point to the system.

I think the games are lacking for this system. Because of their greed and short sightedness. Excellent and perhaps the best ever handheld marred by bad business decisions are killing it.

@monson21502 yeah, good luck finding a handheld (current gen handhelds) with a bundle of a game and memorycard that is $99 then.

So poor sales aren't enough to justify a price cut? Granted sales have improved since release, but not enough to warrant $250-$300 plus a memory stick, extended battery, and at least one game to play. Factoring all that in, it could cost as much as a PS4 depending on the memory stick. Hopefully Sony gets their heads out of their ass and makes a common sense move.

"Price cut" has quite a specific meaning, and cannot used interchangeably with "sale" or temporary markdowns. Tsk tsk, GS.
