Alongside Switch Lite Reveal, Nintendo Announces New Switch Model With Longer Battery Life

In addition to the Lite, Nintendo is also introducing an improved version of the original Switch.

If you love the existing Nintendo Switch but just wish it could go a bit longer between charges, you're in luck. Not long after announcing a more radical redesign in the form of the Switch Lite, Nintendo has revealed a more modest revision to the original Switch that appears to have only a single key difference: better battery life.

The original launch model Switch's battery offered between 2.5-6.5 hours of playtime by Nintendo's estimates. However, this revised version will deliver 4.5-9 hours of battery life, even topping that of the Switch Lite, which boasts improved playtime over the original Switch. The revised Switch model will cost the same ($300 or roughly £280). According to Nintendo's product page, it will launch in mid-August in the US.

Now Playing: New Nintendo Switch With Better Battery Life Announced - GS News Update

This is not an entirely new model of Switch in the same way that the Lite is, instead serving as a replacement for the original version (albeit one with a desirable new perk with its battery life). It's possible that this is new iteration of the console that prompted a recent FCC filing, which suggested that the existing Switch could see some changes to its internal components.

As noted by Nintendo when the Switch first launched, the battery life depends on the game that is being played, as a title like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild drains power at a much faster rate than other, less intensive titles. Other factors, like screen brightness and network functionality are also likely to play a role; Nintendo did not specify exactly what kind of experiences represent the bottom and top ends of its battery estimate.

This is one of two hardware announcements Nintendo had to make on Wednesday. In addition to this Switch revision, it also announced new Switch Joy-Con colors.

On July 12, Nintendo pulled back the curtains on the Switch Lite, which is a smaller and cheaper version of the hybrid console. It features a smaller screen, does not output video to TVs and has dedicated control inputs instead of the detachable Joy-Cons, it also boasted better battery life than the original launch Switch (though, as noted above, the newly announced Switch model's battery life tops that of the Lite). Due to the inability to connect to a TV, some games may have issues with Switch Lite, at least without purchasing separate Joy-Con controllers.

Reports indicating the Switch Lite surfaced in June and, around the same time, it was also reported that an "enhanced" version of the Switch targeted at "avid" gamers is also in production. Nintendo hasn't indicated this is the case as of yet, however.

@ronaldmcreagan: Let me guess: your Wii & Wii U library isn't large. I share your sentiment and that is my situation.

@SirNormanislost: Of course not, this is the first revision. We´ll have to wait maybe another year for another revision to address that point.
DS, DS lite, DSi, DSi XL, 3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS, New 3DS XL, 2DS, 2DSXL....

@SirNormanislost: The battery won't be upgraded as far as we know, Norman. The extended autonomy should come from the new CPU. That said, I do recall reading that there would be updates made to internal storage. Likely, and hopefully, performance oriented. ?

that revision is really an update to stop the game piracy in the Switch, which they can't stop with the current version.

@batusai4ever: Nintendo deserves to have all their Wii and Wii U titles pirated, since they won't even offer those games to people willing to pay for them.

I want to play a bunch of Wii and Wii U games, but I have no ability to do so unless I play a pirated game.

@ronaldmcreagan: I got a Wii U as a gift for my daughter and modded it right away, now I have all Wii U installed in a hdd and it also plays original Wii games. Finally got to play BOTW and it was great. My daughter loves co-op games and we have tons of fun with all the Mario and DK games. If you can mod it then go for it.

@ronaldmcreagan: Buy a Wii or Wii U from ebay or amazon and buy the games you want to play. Don't resort to thievery.

What would be really cool is if they announced a powerhouse next gen console. Toe to toe with Microsoft and Sony, Nintendo wins that fight hands down.

@tlpina: Japan's market is mostly mobile gaming. That's why the 3ds, Vita and Switch are so big over there.

@Fandango_Letho: I lived in Tokyo for 8 months and that's not a correct assessment. Mobile Gaming is very popular, however, the amount of money they spend to play at home is insane.

Every gamer i knew had at least 2 platforms at home and nearly everyone had a powerhouse PC.

So, i maintain that if Nintendo were to build a platform that is as powerful as Microsoft or Sony's, mixed with their innovation on gameplay, Nintendo would corner a big piece of the market.

But then again, this is just my opinion.

Thankfully you don't really need brain cells to pass on a $712 gaming system that's Trojan horsing as a phone.

@zmanbarzel: enjoy the switch revision 2, same shit with marginal battery boost absolute bargain and add the last switch you bought plus this piece of garbage and you the black shark 2 that would still be cheaper and better and far superior.(that's where your loyalty lies.)and the games oh I guess that's where you lost your brain cells, you probably sold your family for a slice of mario, but can you tell the difference.

@lorddaggeroff: “enjoy the switch revision 2”

If I were in the market for a new Switch next month, I’m sure I would, but I’m still quite happy with my launch system. I think you’ll find that the vast majority of purchasers of Switch 1.0 don’t feel an urge to upgrade just for a better battery.

Nintendo is too good at it's game. It will keep on selling in the next few years, at least before the next revision comes out. Best money I ever spent.

People were expecting something new when it was clearly from early reports that the changes would be minimal. Besides, this is market it to the people that have no buy a Switch yet, is selling at the same price. Honestly why you want an upgrade version of Switch, you are better off buyin a PS4 Pro, you have a greater variety of games and even some of the same games running in better quality . Nintendo is good at making their own games, and normally they do not require powerful hardware.

Is this suppose to be a joke? No improved HARDWARE version? So people that have this pile of crap are still stuck with terrible running ports while undocked. Bloodstained doesn't even run in any form of the Switch hardware, lol.

Much cheaper to buy a USBC Power delivery 3.0 power bank as a on the go battery if your outdoor session is longer than 4 hours. I’ll pass on this iteration.

The revision exists to:

- Close security holes.

- Save Nintendo money on outdated internals

- Possibly alleviate overheating/throttling issues people have experienced in more demanding games (Zelda, Witcher).

Obviously not you. I mean, someone whose first five comments after logging in for the first time in a month are all about the console is certainly the definition of "a person who doesn't care."

I wasn't expecting much because you can't tick off your early adopters by making some super duper special edition so soon in the cycle. But a longer lasting battery? I guess it's better than a kick in the head. Sure wish websites wouldn't hype stuff like this when they know zero about it. I was hoping for something intriguing enough to finally get me to buy one. Not sure what that would be but a better battery isn't it.

Announcing a console with better battery life... Seriously, it's a very cheap move. I mean, if someone likes to play Switch he got scammed because the original battery life isn't very good compared to that "enhanced" verison... That most probably already existed when the switch officially launched.
