Amazon Reportedly Cancels Its Lord Of The Rings MMO

The game's cancellation apparently came after a disagreement with Tencent.

Amazon has reportedly canceled its Lord of the Rings MMO game, first announced in 2019, making it just the latest in a growing list of unreleased projects from the tech giant. However, it appears this game's cancellation came from a contract dispute rather than any issue with creating something that met quality standards. The company was not making the game alone, and its development partner was acquired by another company in the middle of production.

Bloomberg reported on April 17 that issues arose after co-developer Leyou Technologies was purchased by Tencent back in December. Amazon and Tencent could not then come to an agreement to continue developing the game, which was also being co-developed by an internal Amazon team, and this forced it to be canceled. According to a statement Amazon gave to Bloomberg, the internal team will move to other projects. The game was going to be free-to-play, according to the initial announcement, and was planned for both PC and consoles.

Now Playing: New World - Exclusive Developer Breakdown Of The MMO's Progression Systems

Leyou is the same parent company behind Warframe developer Digital Extremes and Gears Tactics studio Splash Damage. It also owns a stake in Certain Affinity, a studio that has worked extensively on support development for the Halo series.

Thus far, Amazon Games has a very rocky track record for actually shipping games. Multiplayer titles like Breakaway and Crucible have been canceled outright, with the latter actually releasing and then being un-released after receiving significant criticism. Two other projects were apparently canceled, as well, and the MMO New World has been delayed repeatedly. It's now arriving in August, or at least that is the currently scheduled date.

Amazon is still spending a whole lot of money on another Lord of the Rings project, however. The first season of the upcoming Lord of the Rings show cost a reported $465 million to make, a staggering figure for a series that will be included free with Amazon Prime memberships. However, a former Amazon Studios executive has criticized the report, calling it "fake news" and seeming to suggest that figure is inflated.

There's still a LotR MMO game still around. Used to play it years ago. Fun stuff. Why would they do another MMO that still an MMO?

It was all thanks to Tencent screwing things up on the contract. I'm sure Amazon was still ready to do it.

I suggest people read Jason article as well, Yes it was Tencent who ended the deal. Though Amazon corporate side was to involved in the creative decision were nothing getting done by the developer of the game and things were getting change on the lasted trends because the guy on charge did not know anything about game design

Tencent probably wanted to monetize it even more and also wanted to install some kind of backbone for personal data collecting in their MMO software. Amazon said no, probably. I think it's the latter.

It's honestly just Tencent though. I was thinking about this yesterday but as other have stated before, if you support Epic Games Store, you support China, which means you support their non-copyright laws.

**** all that noise and with Tencent having a studio in America now is just basically "I don't trust a unknown company overseas with a billion dollar money tag, let alone trust the same people from that place with a studio in California" and yes Tencent has a dev team in California this was reported 4 months ago early 2020. All I'm seeing from this is essentially the next Electronic Arts.

Btw that new dev team a lead was talking about MTX sending mixed signals that brought up red flags immediately like he couldn't decided if the game was going to have mtx or not like... why?

@locke90: It's really more the Chinese government taking control. You take them out of the picture, and it's just another major publisher...

...although considering how all the biggest ones are evil, maybe that's not much of an improvement, heh.

no matter what they say the game was crap or it would went ahead and been made, the only other " disagreement " would been loot boxes and how to make more $$$ and they only would been fighting on who got the larger % . I say they got low balled on money they would get then asked why are we even making the game and left.

@Thanatos2k: I kind of agree with you but the same could also be said that 27+ years ago Sony had no business in the gaming market and look at them now.

I would mention Google Stadia but the laughter causes me to mistype.

Some guy actually argued with me that the old ass LOTR MMO from almost a decade ago would have ate up all the potential players for the new game. That's like saying no one would play FF14 because people still play FF11.

The bigger issue would have been Amazon putting out two MMOs at the same time. They would have cannibalized each other. It's better this way, we can now see if New World can get and maintain an audience without the variable of another new MMO being released.

@mcnichoj: I'm thinking their 2 games would have different markets of players. And New Worlds WAS to be a more PVP game, that focus has changed and shifted now. So at the time they were developing them they would be 2 very different styles of games. I think New Worlds was even to be a sort of Rust style game with it being more of a open world survival game. I couldn't be mistaken about that last part. So many games like that now a days.

@Carpetfluff: rightly so. No game coming from them has any creative nor artistic ambition. They're just hitting popular genres or trends and seeing what sticks. It's barely better than mobile.

That was supposed to have arrived, last August, I have doubts.
