Amid Fortnite's Success, New Unreal Tournament Stops Development At Epic Games

Epic is no longer actively developing the free-to-play game.

Epic Games has confirmed that it has stopped actively developing the new, community-infused Unreal Tournament game. Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney confirmed to Variety that the free game is still playable and available to new users, but Epic itself has stopped working on it.

"Unreal Tournament remains available in the store but isn't actively developed," he said.

Now Playing: Fortnite Dev Creates Steam Competitor, Stops Unreal Tournament Development - GS News Update

This may be sad for those who were playing and enjoying Unreal Tournament, but it's no surprise to learn Epic has stopped working on it. Back in September, Epic said the team working on it moved over to Fortnite to support that game's ongoing development. As of September, the game was officially "on hold," and that appears to continue to be the case.

Announced in 2014, the new Unreal Tournament was developed on Epic's Unreal Engine 4 and aimed to be "true to its roots as a competitive FPS." Epic was planning to develop the game "in the open," as a collaboration between Epic Games, Unreal Tournament fans, and Unreal Engine 4 developers. Epic also planned to offer a marketplace where fans can buy and sell new content.

Unreal Tournament is not the first game Epic stopped working on after Fortnite grew in popularity. In January this year, Epic announced its free-to-play MOBA Paragon was shutting down, with refunds available to everyone. More recently, some Fortnite: Save the World players have said they feel second-class as the battle royale mode gets seemingly more attention than the paid game. Save the World will transition to a free-to-play game like Fortnite: Battle Royale, but the transition was recently delayed to 2019.

Fortnite is hugely popular on a level that seems unprecedented in gaming, so it makes sense that Epic would pour significant resources into its ongoing development. Still, it remains to be seen if Epic becomes a one-game studio now that Fortnite is riding high. Of course, the studio also operates the massively successful Unreal Engine, while it also announced a new Steam competitor; so even if the studio's game development output is relatively lower, the studio is absolutely keeping busy with huge projects.

This is a damn shame but easy to see coming. Fortnite is garbage in my opinion, and UT was always a solid game over the years. Look at Doom making its comeback again with a new awesomely solid game a few years back. It's bullshit to say nobody will play it, I see people playing the alpha all the time and servers are filled. I play it alot and enjoy the shit out of it. Personally it's a much more skill oriented game than fortnite will ever be. New players are popping into games all the time on UT, so they're just focusing on the current greed, but it's like anything they really should be diversifying and using older solid titles to keep that diversity going. Nintendo has used its solid library of games over and over for the last 30 years. Yeah developing brand new random games might not be on the docket and are always taking a chance in making money, but a small dev team working on UT is easily profitable because the name sells itself. This was always a solid FPS right next to Quake, which in itself has a solid new game in Quake Champions so anyone saying nobody will play UT is way off the mark here. It's just piss poor management in these projects. At this point sell off the damn property to a smaller studio and let them push UT back into the limelight. It will catch back on and work. Watching fortnite to me is garbage and it's boring as **** to play along with those other shit Battle Royals like Realm Royale etc... PUBG did it right and these copy cats are garbage. Give me back some solid games like Doom, Quake, and UT over Fortnite any day.

One would think that they're making more than enough money to be able ot afford hiring new people, instead of putting everyone on that game. But if they were planning to make the new UT f2p then chances are that it wouldn't have been much of a success anyway, so I guess profit wise it was a wise choice. Until the Fortnite trend eventually dies down and they'll be left with nothing cause it's all they've focussed on.

@Atzenkiller: I’d imagine Fortnite’s success isn’t sustainable enough for the company to expand like that, among other reasons.

This isn't really telling us anything new and I wonder if they will come out to clarify the situation.

Saying that the game "isn't being actively developed" is the situation as we have seen since they moved the UT4 developers across to create the Battle Royale mode - since they had all the FPS experience.

He isn't actually saying that the game has been cancelled. Although, us UT fans are still well aware that they won't come back until people get bored of Fortnite & that may well be a good few years!

Crazy how the popularity of 1 free to play game, some credit due to PUBG as well, is impacting the industry. This year we have seen a number of big titles incorporate some form of a Battle Royale mode. Now we the cancellation of a game, and popular franchise, that's been in development for a couple years now. It's like companies are panicking about how they can compete with the popularity of Fortnite.

The sad thing is we will continue to see this trend long after the Fortnite hype and popularity runs out, which I feel like is already losing steam.

Such a scumbag money-hungry "developer." At this rate, they will live off Fortnite until people get sick of it and then they will scramble to make some sort of (way less successful) ip to interest people again. This is a dumb move by EPIC Games. Should be Called EPIC "GAME."

But people are too high off the game to realize any of this so weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

@HOLYSHMUCK: How is this dumb? As much as I've loved UT over the years, next to nobody is playing the new one, there's zero hype, and even if Epic did keep working on it, all they're doing is making a direct competitor to their cash cow that will never be nearly as popular. There's just no real point.

I think you're confusing "a dumb move" with "a move I don't like."

@HOLYSHMUCK: At this rate, they won’t get sick of it. There will always be kids being introduced to it, as a genre and as undoubtedly a franchise. It’s going to be as ubiquitous as Minecraft I’m afraid.

Well it’s a shame they are abandoning it. Unreal tournament made epic. It was their biggest game. I hope the community keeps this thing going. Looks like I will try out quake champions. Been having an itch for a fast paced arena style multiplayer game.

@caj1986: Oldest, maybe. Most prized? They own Fortnite; THAT'S their most prized asset. Either that or the Unreal Engine itself.

UT pretty much made Epic games, and to see them treat it like that is rather sad. Greed is a powerful thing I guess.

@mrdinghat: I mean, UT hasn't been much of anything for the last several years. People are upset here on principle only, because they recognize a name they loved a decade or more ago, but it's not like UT has a ton of active fans these days.

The valve-fication of Epic makes me really sad.

Repeating exactly the same steps.. Design good games, then a good engine, then just sell games and rest while your most profitable game does all the work (fortnite/dota/tf)

We already knew this for quite some time as UT didn't have any updates for months. They're just confirming what we knew and making it official.

@Darkflare_EX: it's just unfortunate to see Epic officially abandoning ship. I guess the game isn't worth the time and investment. But it makes sense. They'd basically be competing with their own game and while there is a fanbase for UT I don't think it's a large enough audience to make much of a profit.

@sparent180: I'm sure alot of the UT fan base won't even play fortnite so it wouldn't be competing. They'd be competing with Quake Champions which is a solid remake and I assume profitable. I love the new UT, such a shame to see them trash it for a trash game title. They can easily make the game worth time and investment because it appeals to a totally different audience and there is plenty of audience for UT especially if it's free to play like Quake Champions, lots of people who never played will try it. Micro transaction the shit out of it like Quake does. Hell I tried Fortnite since it was free. Uninstalled that shit after 5 games.

I just can't get into Fortnite. I've played several times but it just gets so old landing and almost instantly dying. Hopefully Epic is smart enough not to put all their eggs in one basket though. I feel a game like this can die just as fast as it grew...

Such a shame. I still respect them for their game engine, but they no longer make any games that interest me. Kinda like Valve.

@BassMan: UT being such a non-entity Epic walks away from it, while Fortnite is literally the biggest game in the world, is how I know I'm old and don't know what's cool anymore. Looking at both games, side-by-side, I don't understand how UT isn't the popular one. : \

@Mogan: I agree. I play UT still on epic and it's well done and fun as hell to play. Fortnite is hoakey and just not fun, I tried it, none of my friends can even stomach it at all. I've played a ton of Pubg and that is a way better game. UT is fast paced murdering fun and for them to say it won't make money, people are dumb, then why did Doom and Quake Champions show back up! They are solid game titles like always and UT can be solid again too. Just a shame a studio is taking a solid in development game and trashing it. I hope they do know they can run more than one game at a time and be profitable. Morons.....
