Analyst: Wii U GameStop sales below expectations

Sterne Agee industry watcher says hardware and software sales for Nintendo's latest fall short during holiday period at speciality retailer.

Wii U hardware and software sales at GameStop during the holiday season were below expectations, according to an investor note from Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia. The industry watcher said Wii U availability at GameStop continues to be "abundant."

No Caption Provided

The Wii U made its worldwide debut November 18 in North America and sold 400,000 units during its first week. The console launched in Europe and Australia on November 30, but no specific sales figures for those regions have been announced. The Wii U's December 8 launch in Japan saw first-weekend sales come in at 308,570 units.

Bhatia also revealed that the $350 Wii U Deluxe model is selling at a greater clip than the $300 basic version at GameStop, presumably due to its "better value." The Deluxe model includes 32GB of storage space to the Basic unit's 8GB, as well as a bundled copy of Nintendo Land.

Additionally, Bhatia said the Wii U software attach rate at GameStop is "low," but did not provide a specific rate.

"Our conclusion is the Nintendo Wii U launch has been slightly disappointing," Bhatia said.

the wii u is a product without a market. its a ridiculous product with very little appeal to consumers, as evidenced by the lack of sales. nintento completely missed the mark on this thing....whatever that mark was. their next gen hardware barely keeps up with 10 year old tech from the leaders. hilaroiusly off base. the Wii was a hail marry that hit a huge audience but this thing is a joke

@philMcCrevis It definitely has a market. It may be much smaller than Nintendo wants it to be right now, but there are a lot of people who love their Wii U's. If people would honestly give the system a chance they would see that the system is a lot of fun. I was super skeptical before the system came out, but I think it's awesome, and it has a ton of potential.

Is that why is sold over 1m units in less than a month? I don't see how that's "lack of sales" the 360/PS3 did far worse when they first launched.

@philMcCrevis Im very happy with Wii U, has a new way to play, hey that was the motive behind Wii won this gen. I have my computer i7 3930k geforce 680 and 560 (physis) I ready on graphics that arent the most important item for me in entertainment. Without counting the large exclusives just at the lauch, much more games, good games than Wii original.

@Metronoid @philMcCrevis I agree here I love my Wii u as well it brings changes to console games while PS and xbox are pretty much locked down Computer. I already own an awesome PC so consoles are pointless to me but the Wii u offers different gameplay and of course its Nintendo so the thought of there awesome franchises coming to HD and the new system setup just sounds awesome to me.

I'm downloading all of my games, I wonder how downloads will effect gamestop and when they'll be counted in game sales?

I hate listening to the dvd drive, and those things tend to wear out first on an aging console.

My goal is to download all games for my wii u. I don't sell games back anyway unless I've taken a risk on something I may not like *cough halo 4 cough*

@philMcCrevis @teknic1200 no weapon variety, no enemy variety, no boss fights, just a generic corridor run and gun.

The single player game was tacked on to the online game. I'm not a PvP player, but I do enjoy PvE, the co-op on halo was sadly lacking.

Halo 4 is an example of a product that had more effort in marketing then it did in actually creating the product.

I would imagine it's fun for the folks looking for the PvP game.

Biased news. Even Sony s President is buying it. Wii U will be in first or second place in this generation, I was right in the past gen. New Xbox is expected to have AR but this will be very expensive, likely to be launched like the Kinect timeline, way later.

@Metronoid I think the reason for low sales is the lack of games.

Only a few games are available, those that are good enough to be worth purchasing a console for are also on PS3 and Xbox 360 at a lower price most of the time.

Personally bought mine in anticipation for Monster Hunter 3G U ^^'

@Metronoid @AvatarMan96 I don't think it will sell like wii, wii's success will not be matched for some time.

I do think it will sell fine, the gamepad has impressed me more than I expected it to. Getting rid of the pause menu is fantastic. Ensuring you're safe to manage inventory adds that much more depth to the game.

TVii is A+ and once people see the beauty of it more kids will have them.

This news didn't surprise me. I think the next few months the Wii U will lose some of it's steam. There is no game out there that would make me buy a Wii U. No Mario Galaxy at launch? Too early for Mario Kart and Smash Bros. I think I can't wait until a good quality AAA game comes out but by that time I would have to pick between the Wii U or PS4/Xbox720. I'll probably get both and wait on the wait Wii U. Not really impressed with the tablet controller. Before anybody call me a fan boy. I think the Vita is sinking as well. :p 3DS wins in that category. Funny read an article back than people was bashing the 3DS for not being on par with the Vita graphic wise but guess which is still on top because it has the better games. :p Wanting the Vita to do good cuz I'm a big jrpg fan but they gotta step it up.

@Truvietplaya Monster Hunter is that AAA game for many people. Although it's fan base is smaller this side of the pond the folks who like the game will do anything to play it.

If I play no other game on my wii u, MHU3rd will get enough play time to make it worth the console.

I am not surprised, it's GAMESTOP?

Their employee's are also anti Nintendo themed. I went to 4 different Gamestops when I needed an AC outlet exchange for my PSP. When I mentioned the Wii U launch, they kept bad mouthing Nintendo very loudly for everyone to hear, saying it's going to die and such.

I can imagine how that would impact their consumer base. Walmart, EBGames, and Toys R Us all did well. They were probably hoping for this news, which they themselves can be thankful for.

Oh shit

You should come to the GameStop I work at, the manager was going on about how much he loves his Wii U, at first he wasn't convinced (especially when GameStop listed the games at $99.99) but he was impressed with the way I upsold the system to him, which convinced him to hire me.

What I'm saying is don't blame the company, blame the workers. GameStop did have a good amount of Wii U promotion.

Below expectations? My question is that is 1.8 million Wii U's sold a failure? That means most consoles up to that point are a failure like the PS3, 360, PS2, Xbox, and other systems are failures too? Then again, this is Gamestop they are talking about.

I'm mainly a PC gamer and to me the Wii remote is the best input method on a home console I've ever seen. Playing games on a regular controller is a struggle unless I'm playing something simple like a platformer or fighter. Basically, the Wii remote is a clever mouse replacement. I haven't played any recent Call of Duty game, but when I see someone using the remote to aim instead of sticks it looks so fun to me that I want to try it myself.

It's such a shame that the Wii was such a misunderstood console and so many games for it lacked substance. I hope it the Wii U will still be interesting for developers after the other two next gen consoles get released.

@SwimSwimHungry While I agree to an extent, I really wish Nintendo had made an effort to make it so that games that worked better with a regular controller would come to the Wii. Yeah, there's the Pro Controller, but you can't even use it without plugging it into the Wii, and by that point, it was too late.

I think the Wii U has a lot of potential in this regard, games which work well with motion control can work with the Wii remote, and those that are better with a regular style controller can work as well. Just a matter of whether any of those big games come to the Wii U.

Every Console launch is lacking. In comparison, the Wii U launched better than both the PS3/360...and we're in heavy recession right now (way to fix it Obama). The Wii U games will come just as they always do after every launch.

None of this surprises me. The Australian sales have been exceptionally disappointing as well. A friend who works at EB games told me that his store has not yet even sold through their allocation of consoles they received for launch day (including the black premium). Considering how short the lifespan is going to be for this console due to the next gen Sony and MS consoles right around the corner, I dont even see how it's going to outsell the gamecube.

@AussieDCO EB? EB is like Gamestop, they don't give you deals & try to monopolise the market - actually they already have. If it was left up to them, there'd be no launch deals & we'd be paying the full RRP of $428. It was only thanks to KMart that we got some decent launch deals & didn't have to pay full RRP. Then other stores like BigW, Target, JB follow suit, EB?..you still have go up & haggle with them. Stuff them!

The Wii-U will get better. I don't have one yet, but I might get one when the big titles release. All game systems have a hard first year, so this is normal.

If Sony and/or Microsoft go with that "no used games" patent then I'll be switching back to Nintendo.

I bought it. I played it non-stop for 3-4 weeks. It's pretty cool, but is lacking exclusives, and is lacking a player-base. As more people buy it, and I have more people to play online with, I'll play it more. Also, give me a game exclusive to the Wii U. I'm disappointed that many of the Wii U games can be had for 75% off in the Steam winter sale.

In regards to Gamestop, and number of games sold per console. I dislike buying new games at Gamestop. They never have any deals on new games, and I absolutely hate it when my "new" game is lacking plastic wrap. As soon as they open it, it's not new. I pre-ordered my Wii U at Best Buy, and already have 5-6 games for it that I bought new, as well as a pro controller and a hard case for the game-pad.
