Another Sega Game Is Getting Turned Into A Movie, And It's Probably Not One You Expect

The screenwriter of Jurassic World is tackling Sega's Eternal Champions as a live-action film.

Just because Borderlands failed to launch at the box office, it doesn't mean Hollywood is giving up on video game movies. Perhaps thanks in part to the success of Sonic the Hedgehog's two movies, another classic Sega game is coming to the big screen: Eternal Champions.

Via The Hollywood Reporter, Skydance is producing the live-action Eternal Champions movie. The game was originally published by Sega for the Genesis in 1993, and the story revolved around a tournament to determine who the new Eternal Champion would be. Characters from the past, present, and future were brought together to fight until one emerged as the victor. The winning participant would get to resume their life and fulfil their destiny as humanity's champion. The rest would be returned to the moment of their respective deaths.

Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom scribe Derek Connolly will tackle the script for Eternal Champions. His previous credits include Safety Not Guaranteed, Kong: Skull Island, Detective Pikachu, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. His upcoming projects include director Wes Ball's Legend of Zelda movie for Sony, and the G.I. Joe/Transformers crossover movie starring Chris Hemsworth.

Sonic the Hedgehog producer Toru Nakahara will produce Eternal Champions for Sega, while David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger will serve as producers on behalf of Skydance. The Eternal Champions movie doesn't currently have a release date.

Eternal champions was super hyped at the time, but was meh at release. The sleeper version was the Sega cd one with cgi cutscene fatalities.

I remember looking forward to, & ultimately buying Eternal Champions back in 1993. I think it was & still is, a very good & deep fighting game & the movie could possibly be interesting. I doubt it'll break Box office records, but if it's anything like the Mortal Kombat movies - both the original one & the latest film - it could generate a decent enough fan following. A martial arts movie is just that, unfortunately, just a blow-by-blow showcase, but Bloodsport & Kickboxer movies worked, & not forgetting JCVD's The Quest. I wonder if Wesley Snipes or Michael Jai-White would play Jonathan Blade...🎮

We'll see. It'll be tough but this could maybe work if they make it a retro throwback film. Just don't take it too seriously. This is just my opinion, but I'm not sure people will resonate with it if they take it too seriously. Something like this feels like it should be... campy fun? If they're going to do it I think that's what they should aim for.

Haven't we learned the lesson about adapting fighting games into movies yet? It never works because there is NO plot in these games worth mentioning...except maybe DOA games, but their plots are so over the top that it wouldn't translate well.

Though you'd probably get more people to go to a DOA movie because of their ample...assets...if you know what I mean.

Heck just make a DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball game movie and be done with it already.

This will flop if for no other reason than the fighting game adaptation curse.

RIP Raul Julia...the only good thing in Street Fighter movie.

@judaspete: Had to look it up, and I have absolutely no memory of this ever being a thing. That said it doesn't look anything like the games on the cover, (what the heck is up with the dragon medallion symbol?). Doesn't help that the title "Dead or Alive" has many non-gaming contexts. That said, yeah my bad for not knowing. Thanks for the correction.

@Akriel_Boulve: Oh, there is no shame in not knowing it exists. Even by videogame movie standards of 15 years ago, this thing was unusually bad.

I barely remember Eternal Champions. I would love to see Comix Zone made into a movie similar to Roger Rabbit.

If they do not do a game based on Golden Axe as i kind of suggested (or "floated"), then maybe Phantasy Star or Shenmue would be interesting to do as movies.

Crazy Taxi could maybe work as a 25 minute episode tv show with new interesting taxi customers in each episode, and new adventures. But a whole movie about driving taxi? It would hardly get turned into an oscar winning movie starring some famous actor. Nope. Definitely not. Not a chance there. No way. Uh-uh.

@simonthekid7: Lego Crazy Taxi could work really well. It takes out the problem of trying to make things "realistic" and you then create some kind of ticking clock, like a race or something to drive the deliveries and whatnot. I think it could work.

Personally I'd like to see the Yakuza series turned into a movie played just like the games, super whacky situations played completely straight faced the entire time.

I kind of feel like Golden Axe might be games which could be turned into kind of interesting fantasy action movies. I feel like the Golden Axe games are quite similar to the Conan franchise..at least a little bit. It is not like the big advanced civilizations and a developed fantasy world, it is more like a simple and almost lawless world it seems. A bit violent too. It seems like it has some things in common with Conan. Also, Golden Axe is kind of a classic game many might remember.

It sounds kind of like The Hunger Games and a little bit like an old Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, the Running Man. Which is probably why they picked the game for a movie.

I think they chose it because the stories are not relavent and it's kinda a clean slate going in just using the name and characters but maybe it will have a good story. time will tell

If they wanna do a fighting game, I'd rather see a Killer Instinct movie. That game has a bonkers story.

@Sophette: But they (Sega) did not produce or develop Killer Instinct, it is a game from Rare and it originally appeared on arcade machines, Super NES and..ehm.. Game Boy. Microsoft bought Rare from Nintendo in like 2002 and they got pretty much all the big rare games in the deal..except some Rare games. Like, Rare games based on Nintendo franchises.

Odd.

Sega is a bad company. This was a good idea they threw in the trash.

they shouldn't adapt video games that have no worthwhile story to watch into a movie. no wonder borderlands movie failed lol. borderlands even barely playable even with friends, watching it would be the last thing I would wanna watch lol

Looking at the character plots on Wikipedia and any one of these could be a movie premise. For example:

  • Jetta – Jetta Maxx is a member of Russian aristocracy from 1899 A.D. She was working undercover as a circus acrobat at the time of her death. A boxer revolutionary tampered with her tightrope equipment ahead of a major show in China. She fell to her death in front of the live crowd. When her true identity was revealed, it heightened tensions between both nations.

I had this and liked the game, but the controls always felt like a poor man's Streetfighter 2. I usually played it until it made me want to play SF2 and then I switched cartridges!
