Anthem 2.0 Reboot Canceled, But Current Servers Will Remain Live

BioWare Austin head Christian Dailey says the pandemic has impacted its development plans, and as a result the Anthem revision plans will not go forward.

Plans to revitalize Anthem with a large update have been scrapped, following an internal review. In a statement explaining the decision, BioWare Austin studio head Christian Dailey its concepts for "Anthem NEXT" were changed at least in part by the coronavirus pandemic, which has had an impact on studio productivity.

"I know this will be disappointing to the community of Anthem players who have been excited to see the improvements we've been working on," Dailey said in the update. "It's also disappointing for the team who were doing brilliant work. And for me personally, Anthem is what brought me to BioWare, and the last two years have been some of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my career."

Now Playing: Anthem Video Review

He goes on to say that going forward BioWare will be focusing its efforts on the Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and updates to Star Wars: The Old Republic. Anthem's live service will continue running for the current player community, without further updates.

Anthem appeared to be Electronic Arts' answer to Destiny 2, a live game with an endless stream of loot to collect as you outfit your Iron Man-like mech suit, called a javelin. While the game was a graphical showpiece EA's Frostbite 3 engine and it was praised for some elements like the feeling of soaring in your javelin, the late-game was criticized for feeling too repetitive and the loot for being unsatisfying. Given that a live game is defined by attracting long-term play, these were significant obstacles for the game to overcome.

Following its release, EA recognized that the game did not meet its sales expectations of 5-6 million units by the end of March 2019. BioWare continued to support the game with new content and functionality, while a small group explored how it could be overhauled.

We heard earlier this month that EA executives were conducting a review of the revamped Anthem plans. The small team working on outlining its plans was roughly 30 people, but BioWare was said to need around 90 people to work on the project in full. The review was to determine whether to ramp up resources to fulfill that roadmap, and it appears the company decided not to.

It's unclear at this point if this decision will lead to layoffs, or how long server support is expected to continue. GameSpot has contacted BioWare for further comment.

You can read Dailey's full statement below.

Friends,

In the spirit of transparency and closure we wanted to share that we’ve made the difficult decision to stop our new development work on Anthem (aka Anthem NEXT). We will, however, continue to keep the Anthem live service running as it exists today.

Since Anthem’s launch, the team has been working hard to continually improve the game, releasing multiple updates that brought with them a variety of improvements and introduced new content to play. Towards the end of 2019 we expanded on that effort and started working on a more fundamental restructure of the game.

During the development we’ve provided updates revealing some of the team's work through blog posts and conversations with you on social media and it’s been inspiring for us to see the positive reactions and feedback. I've been incredibly proud of the work the team has been doing, and excited to see and play each new build of the experience.

2020 was a year unlike any other however and while we continue to make progress against all our game projects at BioWare, working from home during the pandemic has had an impact on our productivity and not everything we had planned as a studio before COVID-19 can be accomplished without putting undue stress on our teams.

I know this will be disappointing to the community of Anthem players who have been excited to see the improvements we’ve been working on. It's also disappointing for the team who were doing brilliant work. And for me personally, Anthem is what brought me to BioWare, and the last two years have been some of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my career.

Game development is hard. Decisions like these are not easy. Moving forward, we need to laser focus our efforts as a studio and strengthen the next Dragon Age, and Mass Effect titles while continuing to provide quality updates to Star Wars: The Old Republic.

To the Anthem community, thank you for your passion and creativity. Your feedback and suggestions most certainly help shape the team’s direction, and on a personal note, your kindness and encouragement were much needed last year.

Please stay safe and be kind to each other. Strong alone, stronger together.

Christian

*sigh*

I wish that I could fake shock or disappointment, but the truth is that I avoided the game at release after hearing about the poor server and matchmaking connections, wonky gameplay, and piles of bugs.

At some point, the "legendary" edition was on sale for less than 10 bucks, so I said screw it and bought it. It was at least moderately fun and interesting for a couple dozen hours of play, but wore thin very quickly. Still, it was worth what I paid.

I only feel pity for the poor souls who pre-ordered or invested more cash into what could have grown into something cool. Bioware/EA have quickly become nearly as infamous for shovelware as Treyarch/Activision.

Sad. But moving on... Lol

@Thanatos2k: yeah here is one of the few cases where i think eaware companies actually have a strongarm over sheepy customers.

preorder basically gives you some small token gift and in really extremely rare case a chance to get the game before initial sold outs. it gives absolutely no guarantees that the game will be good or supported for years or anything else.

especially now when the prelaunch reviews can be paid, fake, unprofessional quickies or based on incomplete information (adding micros 2 weeks after launch) just stop preordering. the 3 dollar bonus skin and an ability to get a guaranteed copy from infinite digital warehouse is never worth it. only if its from a company that has never released below-amazing products and you want to show support its ok

Just once it would be nice to see some honesty:

'Anthem is never going to be profitable enough for EA to invest any money into it. Servers will remain open until they too become more hassle than they're worth, and then we'll close them too.'

I'd have more respect for these corps if they showed their consumers some first.

I find it rather difficult to feel anything. After all these years, after tons of overhyped, live service crap being shoveled out, I cannot feel anything negative when this happens. I can only hope that it does, so as to set an example.

Yes, of course!

It was THE PANDEMIC that was the reason for Anthem's failure!

Because clearly video game sales have slumped so hard during this time...

@gamerx2015: While I have no doubt that everyone's favorite virus has complicated game development, the tendency to use that as an excuse for everything is more tiresome than most of the mediocre titles being dumped out by these so-called "AAA" studios.

Well, there was hope and EA missed the opportunity to fix what Bioware messed up.

Yea,Bioware lost their MOJO and produced unfinished and buggy games but EA didnt even tried to fix the sh*t.

Andromeda came in a mediocre state but had a lot of potential and imo, with proper support,it could have been a solid ME game.

Ubisoft releases at times games in the same poor state too but at least Ubisoft tend to support their games for a long time.

Now,everybody knows how fast EA pulled the plug and the scepsis about the next ME is huge.

Same with Anthem. Bioware messed it up,EA wanted it to launch no matter what...who at EA thought it will turn into a success is mindbogling.

The game still had potential, the gameplay was solid, graphics were really good, flying mechanics satisfying. It needed a proper endgame content, more expansions about the world and bugfixes.

EA pulled the plug. EA and its shareholders doesnt care for reputation, just cold numbers.

If there was ever plans for Anthem 2...just burn those plans coz whoever bought Anthem, will for sure avoid Anthem 2 like a pest.

I hope Respawn doesnt lose their mojo under EA aswell.

Now,i got to finish Anthem before EA pulls the plug for the servers aswell

@sladakrobot: Anthem is still plagued by rampant technical issues that were never addressed. I managed to finish the incredibly short campaign in spite of the broken elements and filler, but the game still feels like a beta version of some larger project.

Cyberpunk 2077 also seems woefully unfinished, although CDPR is likely to follow through with its promise to fix/add the broken/missing bits.

@sladakrobot: I don't think Andromeda was fixable.

Sure, the bugs could be removed, and animations fixed... but that doesn't fix the core issues:

1) The Mako in ME:1 was the worst part of the entire trilogy, alongside the resource scanning of ME:2 - basing a whole game around combining these mechanics: Zzzzzz

2) Lots and lots of filler content that felt boring - like an open world game before the Witcher 3 showed how it should be done. This adds game play hours, but not fun.
DA:I - while a much better game - suffers from the same problem.

3) Boring companions - compared to Dragon Age and the original Mass Effect games, the companions in ME:A are plain, shallow and boring.

4)The main story - while by far the most evolved and polished bit of ME:A, it felt rushed and didn't engage me the way the Reapers did in the original trilogy.

None of these are really patchable

@teg: The Mako was hardly the worst bit of ME, but it was a severely underdeveloped element that is still far too basic to be such a major component in Andromeda.

The open-world(s) concept of Andromeda suffers by leaning too hard upon the inclusion of a scripted adventure.

Procedural generation could have provided a much more expansive sandbox if it wasn't anchored to the simplistic main plot. There are other ways to include stories in your game, but large publishers rarely take the necessary risks. Cowards.

That's why you don't pre order games, they've given an open beta to participate if someone was into it.

Yeah, right. Blame the pandemic. Everyone else is making more money than they ever did before with their games yet Bioware blames the pandemic for the game's failure. It was a failure from the start and I don't know why they bothered to pretend that they could still do anything about that for so long. I guess they were just really invested into their Destiny clone, desperately wanting to have their own MT fueled online game. And now they've finally decided to move on.

@shinspikes: As if. If you bought this piece of junk at any point, then you really have no one to blame but yourself. It was a pile of crap from the start and should have been very clear to see for anyone. But folks who buy this kind of trash will keep buying it, especially if they say things like "That's it. I'll never buy one of their games again. Ever. I'm serious!"

@shinspikes: So you're even worse, taking any crap you get for free. "I would never buy this game but it's okay to play it when it's free." And here I thought based on your comment that you actually cared about quality, when in reality you're just one of those rebels who wants to avoid "supporting" shitty companies by not paying for their products while still using them.

@hardwenzen: I liked the first intro game, the one on the Golden Gate Bridge & somehow I cannot find a way to replay that again...maybe they took away the best part of the game?

I really liked Anthem for the weapons, fly mechanics, awesome environments & beautiful magical effects, there were many other issues that weighed it down though and the upgrades felt minuscule & tedious.

BIG WARNING TO ALL DEVS:

My friends & I had a long discussion on Games-as-service (GaaS) and we all agreed that we were never going to buy them on day one as most of them had bugs & were incomplete promises. Worst off they had a diminishing player base rather quickly and the longevity of their servers is in question next. At most I will pay $20 for this type of game & only if it is good. GAS type games should be FREE & you simply sell your skins & emotes, which seems only fair for the headaches involved for both sides.

Outriders is the next one & we will have our ears to the ground before even making a $20 purchase.

With that being said ANTHEM is a great game at its core that needs some removal of RPG elements, time consuming upgrades with little punch, & long loading times that when combined keep the players in too much waiting time & less playing time. As a result the player base gets frustrated & no longer cares to even launch the game because of the lengthy time & headaches. I suggest they use the core of the game & can make mini-single player campaigns. In one mini-game they can add the Terminator Javelin skin & maybe kill some Aliens and have various DC skins...etc. Add Iron-man where he belongs!

@mogan: Thanks for the info & even though it might be a relief on the surface the entire model is there really, as it is an ONLINE only game & it will receive updates (skins, play modes...etc). I just looked at it again & the devs say no micro transaction & that the game will be complete at launch and to be honest there were too many broken promises to believe that anymore. Even though this game looks good on the surface I will have to monitor feedback extensively where as before I would have just pre-ordered it.

This game was DOA at launch. What a waste of time and resources.

I hope this is a cautionary tale for more publishers and developers. Live Service is a mostly losing proposition for all. For every Destiny (and it's had it's share of problems) there are a graveyard full of failures.

Live Service should be implemented rarely, and you can put some elements of it in games as long as it isn't the overarching framework of the game that it's dependent on for it's existence.

Feel bad for the people who held onto the game after Bioware announced they were working on rebooting the game. I'd demand a full refund if I were them. Not only did the roadmap end up being a lie, but the whole Anthem comeback was a lie as well. These companies need to be held accountable for their lies.

Well, one good side note about COVID-19 is that it is the gaming industry’s convenient get out of jail card for all their greed and ineptitude (Halo Infinite, Cyberpunk, the gen 9 console launches, all the numerous game delays et. al.).

@GalvatronType_R: Hey now, I believe CDPR's devs when they said they couldn't work on the last gen versions of the game because the console dev kits were on their office computers and couldn't be accessed from their homes. The problem was, instead of just delaying and focusing on getting it done right, the higher ups decided to push a turd out the door.

It's silly to suggest COVID is having NO impact on development schedules. It's only an excuse in the case of things like Anthem where we all knew EA was going to axe the game.

@GalvatronType_R: With Halo Infinite, wouldn't the greedy thing have been to just release it, looking like it did in the July demo, instead of delaying it? They could have blamed covid for its ugly unfinished state but said they had no choice because the Series X needed a new Halo at launch... but they didn't do that

@Spartan_418: the second part of my comment applies to 343i.

Despite five plus years, nearly unlimited budget and resources, and early access to the gen 9 console specs, 343i couldn’t meet a crucial deadline due to sheer ineptitude. But good for them that the virus came along so they could hide their incompetence.

This sucks, I've been waiting for the update to go back and play. I loved everything in the game but I didn't care much for how it was all used and the story lacking punch didn't help. I really wanted to see more from this world. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if it turned out that they just didn't want to waste the money on upgrading the game and instead dumped out an Anthem 2 in a couple years so we could all have the wonderful opportunity to pay full price all over again.
