Anthem Launch "Rougher Than Expected," BioWare Says

Hitting some turbulence.

Anthem's launch had its share of issues, from crash bugs to weapon balance bugs and more. Now BioWare general manager Casey Hudson has conceded to the launch issues while also recommitting to long-term support.

In a post-launch update on the BioWare Blog, Hudson says it was a "rougher launch than expected," and says that the studio was "ready for the possibility that unexpected issues might arise." In a broader sense, he said that the degree of the problems didn't become apparent until the scale of players had increased, and that the studio shares in the community's disappointment at these issues.

Now Playing: What Anthem Doesn't Tell You

"It makes me sad to hear about any issues that would hold someone back from fully enjoying the game," Hudson said. "I take that very personally, and it’s been our top priority to get improvements out to you in the fastest, safest way."

He then transitioned to plans for the future, explaining that improvements are coming to endgame loot, game flow, and stability. This is in addition to adding more world events and story content, as outlined in its roadmap.

"But we understand there is skepticism out there," he continued. "We hear the criticisms and doubts. But we’ll keep going anyway, working hard every day on Anthem – an ever-changing world, constantly improving and growing, and supported well into the future by our team of passionate developers."

Anthem's rocky launch has included crashing PS4 consoles that forced Sony to issue refunds, an update inadvertently broke the game, and mediocre reviews. At one point a bug made Legendary and Masterwork items more common, and BioWare irked players by fixing it. The studio later issued a patch that adjusted drop rates more intentionally.

Hey Casey Hudson, you guys sold me an unfinished and broken game. And yes, you knew that at release. Not cool, not cool at all.

Don't have to tell where you can stick that roadmap, right?

Why is it that so many companies have been putting out these half-baked games, expect people to buy them and then "promise" that they'll fix it as time goes on?

It's good to see them taking ownership and working to fix it. Sad that they couldn't get more time to launch a solid game. I love the gun play and hope they work out a solid game in the coming months. Will be keeping my eye on it, waiting to return.

Division 2 is out and apparently doesn't suck. This game is dead in the water.

@Thanatos2k: Thankfully they mostly fixed the skill bug. Was getting pretty bad. I love the gameplay in Anthem, so seeing all these issues makes me sad. Hopefully in 6 months they'll have something I can come back to and enjoy. In the meantime, Division 2 is going well.

@Thanatos2k: Yeah but that 92gig download is killer on PS4, so it still has life there. If they're smart, they will offer a huge discount on the game on other platforms.

The item scaling problem isn't a bug. That's a lie. It was a poorly thought out design decision.

Of course he knew about the state the game as in, but decided to launch it anywy. I wonder how long this commitment will last. They dropped all support for ME:A just a few months after release and they'll do the exact same with this game if the sales numbers don't magically increase.

I am sick and tired of games, particularly live service games, coming out of the gate terrible, incomplete or otherwise lacking, just for the developers to go "yeah we screwed up but we'll do better."

Learn from your competition, learn from your own mistakes, learn learn learn. If you can't bring a decent product at launch then I don't trust you to make it much better. This is just early access and kickstarter in disguise.

@v1ndictive: yeah it’s like a car company selling a car that runs like crap, then telling the customer they’ll update the engine computer over time to fix it. With so many other choices of games, no one has time to wait, nor money to waste.

@v1ndictive: I really just wan for once to have a full game released and then add ons be truly add ons instead of plans to increase revenue.

I am not going to play the expansion if the base game was garbage. Maybe put more effort in what was released instead of trying to parcel it out.

@xxmavr1kxx: This is why the Souls games are so highly regarded. This is the part defenders never seem to understand: there are OTHER games out there that have done it, and done it better. If a smaller dev without the resources of a super publisher like EA can manage it, then why not the top publishers?

No, don't give me the online multiplayer excuse. Apex Legends has had a great launch as far as I can tell. Oh, and EA had absolutely no hand in its development. Coincidence?
