Anthem Makes A Big Change To How Future Content Will Be Released

No more Acts.

Anthem is changing up how it releases future content. Developer BioWare has confirmed that it is ditching the previously announced "Acts" release schedule in favor of seasonal updates.

As described before Anthem's release in February, BioWare planned for the game's Acts to introduce new locations and features that roll out over time. The latest of these Acts culminated in the Cataclysm event that's going on now. It's coming to an end soon, and BioWare is now telling fans to expect seasonal updates in the future. BioWare's Chad Robertson explained that BioWare is moving to this structure so that it can address some of the "core issues" people are experiencing.

Now Playing: Anthem Is Changing How It Releases Future Content - GS News Update

"We hear your concerns on core issues in Anthem and are acting on it," he said. "Those systems require a more thorough review and re-working versus quick fixes. We’ve got a team working on that now, and early results are promising. In order to address these long-range plans, we are moving away from the Acts structure for updates. Instead, we have additional seasonal updates planned for this year that we think players will enjoy."

"These events will deliver challenges and chases similar to what you’ve seen, and are built around some fun themes we’re bringing to the game."

Robertson said BioWare is making this disclosure as part of its effort to be more transparent and honest with fans about the work that's required to "make Anthem better."

"We also want to ensure we're backing up our words with a great game you can play," Robertson said. "So I don't have any news today to share about the long-term changes we are bringing to Anthem. What I can say is that we will continue to engage with you, our community, through PTS when we can show you what is coming."

Anthem is the 5th best-selling game of 2019 so far in the United States, according to NPD. It only trails The Division 2, Madden NFL 20, Kingdom Hearts III, and Mortal Kombat 11.

Presumably in a bid to get more people playing it, EA added Anthem to the free game catalog on EA Access and Origin Access earlier this month. The game's lead producer, Ben Irving, left the team in August. Upon his exit, he said he believed Anthem has a bright future ahead of it.

If Anthem's next dlc is a flop the game will be shut down by Summer 2020. Bioware can't afford to make any errors. If DA4 doesn't make the money EA wants, Bioware is finito.

You don't even need to be a fan of Bioware to know how this game was going to turn out. They're 0-2 and I'm confident DA4 will be just as terrible. DICE is following in their footsteps with BFV. I have no idea what are going on over at these studios, but it's not working. I've never been more disinterested in EA games and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Just another way of saying "less updates and less content." Now you get one update every three months and they don't even have to commit to anything specific in each update.

They're slowly pulling back from this flop.

@Thanatos2k: Not necessarily. More can be done with more time. I'd rather have large updates every couple months then tiny ones every couple weeks. Kind of like Destiny with seasons.

@Lord_Sesshy: That's not what this is. This is "We don't have to commit to actually releasing features on time because we're no longer giving times."

They appear to have duped you into thinking you're getting higher quality updates because they're taking their time, which is not the case. Less resources are being devoted into releasing less.

@Thanatos2k: I just go by what I read and what other devs do with games like this. Everything you are saying is speculation so it really doesn't hold weight, it's just what "you" think. Plus I never said "higher quality" content, I just said more.

@Lord_Sesshy: You should instead go by what you know about EA, not other devs.

Is this game already lost or can it be saved?

@sladakrobot: The gameplay is definitely there, they just need the content. Besides, if No Mans Sky can come back I'm sure a game like Anthem can too.

@sladakrobot: If BioWare sticks with it, and EA is willing to keep investing in the game's future, Anthem can totally be saved. It's not where it needs to be quite yet, but you can totally see a really fun game from where it's at now.

If you see the game for cheap, and you're at all interested, I'd give it a shot.

@mogan: I’ve not played it, so I only offer this humbly, but my main three concerns are that lead me to think it may never be a good game:

1. If they are going to keep it a looter shooter, this seems incompatible with how they designed it. Looter/shooters need good loot. The fun in Anthem combat is not built around the loot, I.e. the guns, it’s built around the powers. A good looter shooter that has legs needs to have loot that is powerful and changes up the gameplay mechanics. It seems they would have to completely redo the whole combat system.

2. The engine seems totally borked re: the huge loading times. I’ve read some learned people say this is not easily fixed or even that it is not possible to fix.

3. The dual system of stories in the hub and combat in the world sounds like it is a complete flop with nothing fun about the hub at all.

What are your thoughts on those? Again, I really do not know enough to have a firm opinion, and I do hope, for all the folks who bought it, that they can pull it off.

@cappy: You’re not wrong about any of that, but BioWare’s actually made attempts to improve in each of those areas.

The powers in Anthem actually ARE loot. Each Javelin’s (class’s) powers are items you equip in different slots, and there are several options per slot, per class. Plus, each class has a bunch of mod items that provide passive buffs or modifiers to the different powers. So you’ve actually got a fair amount of customization options via loot, beyond just guns.

The performance WAS awful at launch. I played on an Xbox One X, and Athem’s gotten a lot smoother and quicker since it first came out. Load times are still a thing, but there aren’t that many and they’re not so bad anymore. At least on the X.

You’re right about the hub world being weak. I think BioWare realized that, because they added the ability to launch missions and access your inventory/crafting/load-out screens from anywhere (instead of having to run around to a specific spots in the hub to do either). There’s also a “Launch Bay” you can return to after a mission, rather than the hub, that you can pick up the end game repeatable missions and shop at.

Anthem launched as kind of a mess that didn’t quite know what it was, but I think BioWare’s come a long way towards cleaning it up and figuring it out.

@mogan: Cool, thanks very much for the info. That is really good news re: the loot. If they can make it so that you have some chance to really change up the mechanics of your build when you pick something up, and you can find those things at a comparable frequency to something like Destiny (or preferably more frequently) I think that’d be enough to give it a chance, as far as loot goes.

Fingers crossed they pull it off (though I hope other devs never take this for a success story like Fallout 76 seemed to. Like “oh we can just launched in a bad state and people will still buy it and we can see if we can fix it later.” That idea needs to die. Lol!)

@sladakrobot: If you've got EA Access give it a try but at this point don't pay for it. The gameplay is solid but that's it. The story line was OK and the end game just isn't there. I really enjoyed the Interceptor and wish there was more to do beyond find the best in slot gear via 3 missions and 4ish Strongholds.

@sladakrobot: It can be fixed. It’s only real remaining problem is content at this point. The game needs more to do after the campaign is finished. But they’ve made pretty big improvements to performance, loot drops, and quality of life.

It’ll probably never rival something like Destiny, but Anthem’s got the potential to be a solid loot shooter with its own look and feel.

@mogan: So they did fix the loot problem? That's why I stop playing because I kept getting the same loot.

@relentless: I stopped playing cause the chance of getting decent loot was pathetically low. I put a lot of time in and was barely rewarded even playing on the highest difficulty. That was also when the population took a nosedive making it difficult to even find 4 people for Strongholds.

@Husker42C: Yea, thats exactly how my experience was too. Either I got useless loot, or I kept receiving the same exact loot. So I got sick of it, and just like you stated it was hard sometimes to find a full team.

@relentless: Sadly I think it's gonna be like that for a while because they just don't have enough loot to increase the drop rates.

@relentless: My understanding is that they've improved it. I never made it to the level cap, so I was never getting the really high end stuff, but I did stick my head back in during the Cataclysm event recently, and I was seeing better drops than I had before, for sure. The perks on weapons and gear seemed to make more sense and be more meaningful, and the couple of purple drops I got were a significant upgrade over the stuff I'd been using.

I think they could still stand to create Destiny like gear perks that do more interesting things than +X% to Y stat, but the gear I found seemed about as compelling as something like the last two AC games or the Dragon Age series.
