Antiwar group targets Ubisoft, America's Army

Group claims publisher and US military are recruiting children in violation of international law.

The America's Army games have served as a recruiting tool for the US Army since the line debuted in 2002 with a free-to-download first-person shooter. While the Army has been clear that the games are targeted at young Americans to increase their interest in military service, an antiwar group this week is saying those potential recruits were too young.

The group Direct Action to Stop the War (DASW) is taking to task the Army and its sometimes-partner in the America's Army series, Ubisoft, for what it calls the recruiting of children in violation of international law. DASW claims the Army is specifically targeting boys as young as 13 with the game, which is rated T for Teen. The United Nations Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict specifically forbids the recruitment of children under the age of 18.

The group said in a statement that it met with Ubisoft North America president Laurent Detoc, who informed them that the publisher was through making America's Army games. An Ubisoft representative did not return GameSpot's request for confirmation on that point.

DASW also wants a warning label attached to the game. The suggested label would read, "Warning: this video game has been developed by the United States Army to recruit children under the age of 17 in violation of the U.N. Optional Protocol and international law. Combat service has been known to cause death, irreparable injuries, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and lifelong feelings of overwhelming guilt."

The group has planned an antiwar rally for today in San Francisco's South Park--a block from Ubisoft's offices--to call attention to its grievances with the games.

Okay, for one, the suggested "warning label" the DASW has written out is more anti-persuasion to buy the game than anything else. It's ridiculous to expect any video game to say that it's in violation of an international law, then scream negative stuff we all already know to be true. If that group is serious about stopping Ubisoft, they need to get realistic.

"These people need to get real and start doing something with themselves to make some sort of actual difference. They complain about our military recruiting younger teenagers with video games, but they let go unsaid the fact that Muslim extremists create terrorism recruitment cartoons directly aimed at children barely able to walk who, by the way, would happily kill any of them, as well as those in our armed forces. By the way liberals, 9/11 was an act targeted at civilians, not the military." 2 wrongs do not make a right. educated people do not use extremists as examples to be followed

Well i have to say this isn't a recruiting tool. Just like GTA isn't a "violence creator". This is simply a game. On a side note, it really irritates me that people have lost track of how the US gained the freedoms they have. The only reason this group even gets to protest is because someone before them fought for their freedom. The US military ensures that those freedoms stay in place today. Don't get me wrong, i'm all for brining the troops home and ending this current "war", but don't degrade the military that keeps your freedoms in place. Also I think they need to clearly define "recruiting" because if someone talks to me about joining the military in high school, technically that is a violation of their "U.N." act as well. I had a ton of military recruits talking to me in high school, i see nothing wrong with it. Many of my friends have joined, my wife is a military brat, and if my freedom were threatened you had better be sure i'd be on the front lines fighting to defend it. Sorry about that rant. This is just a game plane and simple...leave it and the developers alone...Is the DASW funded by jack thompson?

first of all war is a neccessity, if there wasnt war the human race would already be extinct, because there would be too many people on this planet, which would result in..... not enough room, not enough food, not enough resources.......... the death of the human race.... there are more people being born everyday than dying.. who cares if these games got somethign with the us government for recruiting, i love these games and will continue to play them, for they already have too much money, power, and backing for some group of tree-huggers with their heads so far up their own asses, that they wouldnt understand truth if it hit them in the face, can try and take off the market..... most of humanity is ignorant.

I didn't know that selling kids a war game counted as recruiting them these days. Or that recruits for the army base their entire decision solely on an unrealistic video game. Was I recruited in my youth without knowing so? Oh dear...

I just love the label. (I joke of course) As if the world couldn't get any better huh? So, lets get this straight. Their against war, so instead, they focus their attention on a video game. Wow. *Shakes head and walks off in disbelief*

We need more soldiers anyway. Americas Army does a good job of showing you general scenarios you would face in both training and the battlefield so why is all of this a bad thing? Stopping recruitment won't stop a war.

Why even waste time mentioning this? Are they going to target all the other war games? Call of Duty? Medal of Honor? They're all targetted for kids under 18 too. "Combat service has been known to cause death." lol, duh! I think recruits know this going in. Also, the armed forces screen candidates. No one under 18 will get in the army anyway.

I agree with rayjohansson. I've never played the console America's army games, but I loved it for the PC. I personally don't find it to be a recruiting tool. All it does is educate you some about the army. Any game could educate someone on how to do something dangerous. Does this mean the stupid group should force NASCAR games to feature the warning, "Warning: this video game may recruit children under the age of 13 to take part in activities that have been known to cause death, injury, and suffering from invisible fires"?

Im Welsh so im in no rush to join the U.S Army anyway but im pretty sure that the game probably has almost no impact on recruitment rates. Why are these people against joining the army anyway do they think its unfair that these soldiers are trained to do a job and then expected to actually do it?

Okay, and I walk into my high school, and every month or so there's a booth that tries to recruit for the US armed forces. They can only recruit those of age, but they'll talk to any kid, or try to talk to any kid, who is at all interested in signing up. My high school is 9th through 12th grade, which means kids ages 13 through 19 are being targeted for enlistment by armed forces recruiters. If you wanna cause an issue, cause and issue with high school recruiters. Video games don't walk around your school and try to get you enlist. Playing America's Army doesn't sign you up for the war, it just tries to sway your opinion and convince you that it's a viable idea to do so. And it doesn't cost $50 or $60 to talk to a recruiter, while it cost that much to buy this game. Just ridiculous. People need to shut up and put their attention towards something more important. I don't know, maybe raising your damn kids?

If we were to follow the flawed logic of the DASW then schools would need to get rid of the high school JROTC programs cause we all know they target 14-18 year olds as possible army recruits.

I'm amazed at how disgustingly stupid some people can be. I for one hate realistic warfare/military/special ops themed games because I find them boring and bland, I like fantasy and sci-fi themed games more and even I find this downright idiotic.

Of course this is idiotic - but these groups only do these sorts of things to make headlines. But it does beg the question, why does the army fund this game if it has no impact on the people playing it? I really only came here to read the moronic comments that I knew would come rolling in. You did not disappoint. KUDOS TO YOU GAMESPOT COMMENTERS

Optional Protocol and international law. Combat service has been known to cause death, irreparable injuries, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and lifelong feelings of overwhelming guilt." And what should the warning label stuck onto this organization's back alley, abortion clinic headquarters read? "Warning: this movement has been formed to corrupt and manipulate the minds of all Americans with a below-average I.Q., incapable of thinking for themselves and, by all medical standards, mentally handicapped. We are in clear violation of anything resembling logic and a sense of national pride and patriotism. DASW has, therefore, been known to cause extreme cases of liberal leanings, stupidity, ignorance, other mental incapacities, unplanned pregnancies, illegal immigration issues, drug use and abuse, herpes, syphilis, hepatitis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV/AIDS, etc., etc., etc." These people need to get real and start doing something with themselves to make some sort of actual difference. They complain about our military recruiting younger teenagers with video games, but they let go unsaid the fact that Muslim extremists create terrorism recruitment cartoons directly aimed at children barely able to walk who, by the way, would happily kill any of them, as well as those in our armed forces. psocecil you are right, and they fund Obama. This is pointless, its not a big deal and these people need to get a life and focus on real issues. And why am I not shocked to see frisco involved in this? The same city that banned the military from schools, no surprise they are trying to spread this nonsense nationwide.

Here is a link to the stated UN resolution: << LINK REMOVED >> As others have said, it refers to recruitment of children under 18. That means actually enlisting them in the service. Presenting teens with a game about the Army in no way voilates that protocol. Hmmm...I wonder if Jack Thompson drafted this complaint.

I fail to see their problem. So, kids as young as 13 can play the game? Okay? So? That's not making them sign up for the military. They're just another anti-war group who wants their name in the paper. These idiots are probably funded by the kings of political idiots, moveon.org.

Military service is an honorable career and has a very long history with the human race. And besides, playing an army game doesn't make me want to go and join up. I think most kids know the difference between VG war and real war. And really, the army is at jobs fairs all over the country and regularly go to high schools to talk to students. I don't see anything wrong with that. It's a job that needs to be done and I'm thankfull for the few that aren't afraid to do it.
