AOC Played Among Us With Ilhan Omar, Pokimane, DrLupo, And Others On Twitch, And It Was Great

Pokimane, Hasan Piker, and other popular streamers join the congresswoman in flushing out Among Us impostors.

Update: As planned, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez streamed Among Us on Twitch Tuesday evening with popular streamers Pokimane, HasanAbi, Dr Lupo, and others joining in. Another US representative, Ilhan Omar, took part in the livestream event as well. The event was a huge success, attracting more than 430,000 concurrent viewers at its peak.

In her first round, AOC was the Imposter and she got caught. She got a little sneakier over time, successfully making it later into a match. She even had to slay Pokimane, despite her reservations. You can watch the full stream below, or check out some of the best moments from the stream.

Original story follows...

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wants to play Among Us on Twitch to help get people to vote—currently, her plan is to stream tonight, October 20, though no specific time has been announced. The New York Representative hasn't played Among Us before either, but streamers are already champing at the bit to get her on their stream. After her initial tweet, she sent out a follow-up asking for recommendations on who to play with.

The call for fellow players and streamers was met with several eager and high-profile volunteers, including Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar (who also has a Twitch channel now), streamer and political commentator Hasan Piker, streamer Pokimane, and more. Ocasio-Cortez expressed an interest in using the live stream to encourage more people to vote, which is definitely a good strategy—200,000 people are watching streamers play Among Us on Twitch right now, and that number will only grow as the day goes on. Early voting is happening right now, too.

Among Us has garnered increased popularity with players of late, despite having been released on PC almost two years ago. It puts up to 10 players together on a spaceship or similar closed area, where they're divided into two factions: crewmembers and imposters. The job of the crewmembers is to fix ship systems by interacting with a number of locations around the map, solving small puzzles. Imposters--who look just like crewmembers--are working against the rest of the group for their own agendas, and even have a limited ability to kill the crewmembers. So the real game is about the crewmembers trying to identify and eliminate the imposters before the imposters kill them all. Players can report dead bodies and call votes to try to weed out the imposters, but the imposters can lie to try to throw the other players off their trails and hide their identities.

Shortly after announcing her interest in playing Among Us with streamers on Twitch, Ocasio-Cortez announced she was setting up her channel. She later confirmed that she is "hoping" to stream Among Us tonight, October 20, but didn't provide a more specific time. If you're interested in tuning in, you can follow her on her new Twitch channel.

The United States has been setting records for voter turnout in 2020. More than 29 million people had voted by October 19, up from the 6 million that voted by this point in the 2016 election. It never hurts to get more people to vote, though, and Among Us is just the game to spread the word with. It's been getting more and more popular over the past few months. It broke more than 4 billion views on YouTube in September and has hundreds of thousands of players on Steam at any given time. It helps that you can murder Toad in the murder mystery simulator (with special character mods), too.

Other groups have started to take advantage of games to get the vote out. More Than A Vote, a voting rights group, is releasing content about the importance of voting on 2KTV, the in-game NBA 2K show. We're bound to see more as the election date grows closer.

Representative Ocasio-Cortez made waves in the game industry earlier this year when she tried to stop the US military from recruiting through platforms like Twitch. The measure she proposed was voted down in August. We don't know when she'll be hopping on Twitch to finish tasks, but we'll update you once we do know.

Interesting to see this “Get Out and Vote” messaging on gaming sites paired with articles on Democrats.

@kgsg-19-2: No, don't "gotta." All politicians are pretty scummy; she's just got the "pandering" part tuned in better than most.

Keep all politics out of gaming.

@Pyrosa: Yea, no. This is the same as the dumbass saying "both sides are bad" which is incredibly obviously not true. One politician wants to help and has a history doing so while the other has a president that's letting thousands die.

Agreed, leave politics out of gaming, but it's good for everyone to get her name out there.

@sha_gi:

believes in the tactic of "fake news" which is fake in itself

reads nothing but right wing propaganda in your separate universe full of lies that AOC is destroying the country while the PRESIDENT is actively doing so.

But yea, you know, the rest of us "aren't" woke and believe in "fake news". You're tearing down this and you don't even know it. Pathetic.

@kgsg-19-2: Your statement would have been better if you'd left out "pathetic." One demonstrates concern. The other passes judgment. One says, "We're on the same team." The other says, "F you."

@VANGUARD003: True, I used to have sympathy for these people, but then I realized these people are so far gone w/ their own problems and w/out psychological therapy and deprogramming these people are just one of the worst of humanity right now. But do I realize their affliction? Yes. Do I support them getting help? Yes. But are they getting help right now? No.

i dont really believe politics or the government really has a place in video games.

when i play video games, i play to relax and to just enjoy myself and get away from the crunch of every day life. i dont need to be reminded to get out and vote or be made aware of the latest thing donald trump has said on twitter that might have upset someone, or why i should have to be bothered to care and share some politicians viewpoints. that isnt going to enhance my gaming experience. if i want politics ill turn on the news and take to twitter. hell, politics is already everywhere on the internet and television already. why does it also need a home on twitch? is there a place to just escape from that kind of crap and just enjoy myself without having to be constantly reminded that orange man bad?

whats next? are they gonna tell me to get out and do my part to end some kind of widespread racism because some cops killed some criminals somewhere? maybe help them take over a city and get rid of their police force and hope that there's never a time in my life when i dont need to call the police? sorry. i aint got time to save the world here. i'm too busy slaying dragons and teabagging my falllen opponents.

how far will they take this? perhaps take their campaign to pornhub and **********? the porn industry has untapped potential for politics.. what a better way to make your voice heard than to start talking politics and encourage everybody in a live stream chat to go out and vote while you're all watching some midget in a gimp suit getting taken to pound town?

theres all kinds of platforms to talk and practice politics and get the message out. what businesss does it have in gaming? since when have these politicians ever gave a damn about the gaming industry? arent they the same people using video games as the scapegoat whenever some nutbags cheese falls off of their cracker and they go out and do something violent?

if they want to make a difference and leave a positive impression, why not be active about it and do something to earn the respect of gamers? like ban loot boxes and other predatory microtransactions and in game advertisements in full priced AAA games or whatnot which big companies are slowly trying to sneak into games a few weeks after the reviews are out. go and take action. do something thats going to help the actual consumer, and not the big corporations who will design their game around systems trying to squeeze every last penny they can from vulnerable people in the most unethical ways that they legally can. show that you actually care about the community and will make a difference. dont just use it as a platform to try to solicit more votes, and then disappear from the community the day of the election, reguardless of the results. if that's too much, then youre asking too much of the community and clearly the government has no place in the video game industry.

youre not going to win any favors by using gaming platforms to pander to gamers for political votes. especially not this late into the election anyways. after dealing with president trump for 4 years, everybody knows what kind of person he is, what to expect, and whether or not they are going to vote for him.

i dont care to get to fixated by american politics, especially when i just want to kick back and play a video game for a few hours. but by all means, i dont care who or where you guys pocket your money from, what kind of lies and deception you'll go with just to get elected, and what kind of scandals you run. if you can guarantee me a copy of elder scrolls 6 within the next year, you'll have my vote.

@struvokreborn: It's a good thing, then, that no one is forcing you to watch streams like this. I reckon you could still play all the games you want without ever being bothered by politics in the slightest.

You sure seemed to spend a heck of a lot of time typing that up for someone who is not interested in politics bleeding into their video games though. Seems like something you really care about.

@P00DGE: i was bored and needed some time to kill. took me maybe 5 or 10 minutes to type that down. talk about a heck of alot of time. maybe i should go out and buy the copy of mavis beacon teaches typing. i could probably cut that time in half

and i'm glad nobody is forcing me to watch these streams. to be frank, i'd be more interested in having to sit through advertisements during loading screens in NBA 2K21 where they try to sell me VR setups and vaccuum cleaners.

also i dont mean to be rude, but as someone who isnt interested in "games bleeding into their video games" i just have to ask you something. is english your first language?

@struvokreborn: woah, the editing on that message went through quite the journey. It's clear from your original message that you actually have strong political leanings, and just don't like this story because the person in question doesn't align with your own beliefs.

And don't act polite on my account. It is abundantly clear you meant to he rude, from your original posts (I got all 3 edited version in my email). "Hurr durr", "do you even english bro" and "sit down"... yeah, you very clearly meant to be rude. You don't need to pretend to be a nice guy, just own your toxicity like a man

@P00DGE: they kept deleting my post last night. i came back and tried to type it all up again.

but whatever. perhaps im just a little annoyed with politics being shoved into everything these days. ive never cared for it in my video games. ive never cared for it in sports either. i really dont think i have its place

and i live in canada, and quite frankly i dont even care for that dumpster fire theyve got going on down south. it pissed me off the other month when i couldnt watch my hockey game because they chose to postpone it a few days all because some cop killed some criminal in the united states.

i guess its worse with basketball and football. the fans go there to watch the top athletes play sports. who cares about what some rich dudes political beliefs are? its all about the game. they get paid millions of dollars to throw a ball around. its not like theyre out there saving the world or anything. i dont need to hear about how oppressed they are when theyre living in big houses with 5 car garages and have more money then theyll ever be able to spend in a lifetime. i don't think thats what theyre being paid to do.

yeah it erks me a little bit when they try to shoehorn their politics and beliefs into my sports and video games. i dont believe it has a place. unless its a game based around that, then yeah it really has no business.

yeah if some politician wants to start pandering on twitch for donations and votes and pretend like they even give a damn about the group of people they are soliciting to, good for them. thats their perogative. but that kind of crap aint gonna deceive me. even if their party wins, come the day after the election and all of that twitch money runs dry, theyll be long gone and the gaming community will never hear from them again. none of the political figures have ever cared about the gaming industry. if there was there wouldnt be predatory loot boxes and microtransactions in nearly every AAA full priced game these days. they just want to solicit for money and votes so they can gain power. and quite frankly, the last thing people would want would be for video games to be controlled or manipulated by the government anyways. why would they come here unless theyre that desperate for votes?

it just seems like a weird platform to try to garner up funds and votes from. but i guess it would be a little less ackward than pandering to the pornhub and ********** community. that has some untapped potential right there.

@struvokreborn: again, I have to question just how much you don't care about politics, when you seem so passionate about it in your replies.

Athletes and celebrities use their publicity and status to bring more attention to a topic that is important to them. They are allowed to have opinions too. I don't see anything wrong with a rich athlete bringing attention to an issue they care about. Just because they are living the good life doesn't mean they can't advocate for change to help those that ARE oppressed. These people have an audience and a platform. The regular joe out there who is suffering does not have as loud of a voice. It's about raising awareness, and we can choose to not pay attention if we want.

@struvokreborn: you know, I am right there with you. It will be nice when election season is over. I think most people feel the same way. 2 or 3 more weeks of it left, and we really only have to endure it for a few months every 4 years. It's just a reality of life, and while a bit obtrusive during those months, it isn't that big of a deal overall. I never find myself overly annoyed by any of it.

The left really are pushing gaming hard as a method to push their political views (Or at least seem sympathetic to gamers).

Maybe we should setup matches with only politicians like Mitch, Pelosi, AOC, etc playing together. I'd pay for that one.
