AOC's Military Twitch Ban Voted Down In US House

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's amendment fails to keep the military from recruiting on Twitch.

The U.S. House of Representatives has voted down a measure that would have prevented the military from recruiting on platforms like Twitch. Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez proposed the amendment after the US Army was caught running fake giveaways that would give viewers information to recruiters among other controversies.

The measure would have prevented the military from using video games, esports, and livestreaming services for recruitment, according to Vice. Several branches of the military, including the US Army and Navy, maintain their own esports teams and Twitch channels. The US Army recently paused their recruitment efforts on Twitch after facing backlash.

Numerous controversies regarding the military's Twitch presence have occurred over the past month. The US Army and the US Navy have been banning viewers who ask or talk about war crimes, which is potentially a violation of the First Amendment right to free speech since the organizations are extensions of the federal government. Twitch recently stopped the US Army from promoting the aforementioned giveaways that would give viewers information to recruiters.

The measure was introduced as an amendment to the House Appropriations bill that sets the Pentagon's budget. It would have stopped funding being allocated towards recruitment efforts on Twitch. 103 Democrats, who currently have the majority in the House of Representatives, joined Republicans in voting it down.

Ocasio-Cortez tweeted that she had trouble explaining what Twitch was to members of Congress. The average age of members of Congress is nearly 60--not the target audience for Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone streams.

I Like AOC for the most part, but the military needs to recruit, and the demographic for military service plays a lot of video games. So I am OK with this.

Besides, military a.) is a really important part of our government and society, b.) offers tremendous opportunities, especially to those that need it most, and c.) there is no shame in serving (quite the opposite, actually).

While combat is a possibility, you can easily spend your entire military career never even being deployed to a combat zone.

It's the same reason if you watch any daytime TV you see recruitment ads; because you got people sitting around unemployed during the day watching Jerry Springer or whatever the hell is on these days wondering "What am going to do with my life?" then an ad comes on from the NAVY saying "Do cool shit with us, it's just like video games!" and you're like "**** it, why not?"

The Army screwed up, not the entire military. They are all individual services, have their own methods of recruiting and make their own choices. Seeking a full military-wide ban seems absurd.

Frankly, the military has a right to advertise recruitment on their channels just like everyone else has the right to bitch about it. The fake giveaways are wrong and totally vile and should be condemned and see their accounts suspended, sure, but only because they are a bait and switch. You may not like it, and you might have cause to not like it, but that doesn't change the fact the military is a permanent body of government and they have voices, too.

This really sounds more like cancel culture was thwarted and they're just whining about it.

@Barighm:

Bang on the mark.

On Gamespots end (having read multiple authors opinions on the Army via the Twitter link at the top of the articles), it comes across as hypocritical given the proliferation of Call OF Duty content, where it far outweighs all other content.

The reason doesn't really need explained, it very obviously gets clicks which leads to revenue.

But that in itself, intentional or not, is a promotion of militaristic themed gaming.

Which on it's own, is fine. It's when you take a stance against it, but directly contradict it. Even if didn't put these articles up, it's directly supporting and earning income from a source that does.

Vis-a-vis Hy-po-crisy.

Well, the military is desparate to recruit anyone who's willing so they'll try any tricks they can come up with to do so. And those in the government know this so why would they vote against this? They know they already can't get enough recruits so things would certainly not get better for them.

@Atzenkiller: The problem with your conclusion is that the military already disqualifies a large number of American youth due to many medical and legal issues. Felony convictions, mental health issues, being overweight, and being a high school dropout without a GED are just four of many reasons you could be denied entry.

If they would take anybody that was willing like you say, they wouldn't even need to advertise as much because with an estimated four million new 18-year olds this year, there would be plenty to choose from to meet their annual mission (the Army's mission last year was around 70,000 new recruits, for example).

That's the great thing about an all-volunteer military, if you feel that you are too smart to "fall for" their recruiting tactics then, by all means, let the so-called dummies join in your place so you don't have to if you are able but not willing.

@ad1x2: That's what they used to do. But watch some VICE documentary on the topic and you'll get to see a very different picture. From what I remember this is caused in part by Trump wanting to stock up the troops further while obesity and health issues are extremely rampant in the US nowadays. Barely anyone who wants to join can pass the physical tests anymore so what are they gonna do? They're not gonna get any recruits at all if they're not gonna lower their requirements and so that's what they do. I think they're even taking in guys with a criminal record that couldn't have joined before as well. So yes, they are taking pretty much everyone nowadays out of necessity.

Who would want to join the military anyway? Even in the US there don't seem to be that many "partriots" nowadays who feel proud to serve their country and to fight their wars all over the world. Not nearly enough to fill the ranks at least. From what I keep hearing it's mainly those who can't get any decent job who decide to join the military in the US. So mostly folks who come from a poor background and are poorly educated. And usually at poor health as well. If that's your main target group then you'll have a hard time finding suitable candidates. And US soldiers are already known for not being the smartest tools in the shed. That's the problem with an all-volunteer army that can only attract the poorest and most poorly educated. But at least your military structure still seems to be all about following orders and not having to think much for yourself so that can still compensate to a degree.

@Atzenkiller: I'm not too worried about what Vice is going to say since I've actually served and spent some time as a recruiter as well. The fact of the matter is while some standards may get lowered from time to time depending upon the recruiting mission versus the number of people being admitted, there are many other standards that will remain high. Certain criminal charges can get waived, and others cannot. Many medical conditions will keep you out permanently. From personal experience, I talked to a lot of people that came to the military as a last resort, only to find out that they could join either and it was usually their record that was keeping them out, or they had too many kids. A few others couldn't pass the ASVAB and after they failed multiple times they just gave up.

@ad1x2: Well, VICE didn't make that stuff up. They were interviewing the military recruiters as well. That's where this info is coming from. And it seems that obesity in general is pretty high now in the US miliary. Which shouldn't be surprising since it's rampant among the normal population. And I'v served in the German military as well and I've seen some fat guys there, too. Mainly the higher ranks though that don't seem like they even get any kind of exercise anymore.

But yeah, where are your recruits supposed to be coming from if everyone's obese in the US now? Trump wanted to increase the military and you already have one of the largest in the worlds. So I don't see how it could not be struggling to get enough new recruits without drastically lowering its expectations.

@Barighm: It's not the military's job to help you lose weight, and if you are overweight you probably won't keep up with most of the training anyway. True, some overweight people are in better shape than others, but they are going by the statistics.

Not to mention there's the whole situation with some equipment not being able to fit if you are too far overweight. If you become overweight while you are already in, they will give you a certain amount of time to lose it before they kick you out.

It's hard to imagine that recruiting on Twitch would even be worth the time and effort for the military. I mean, let's face it, most people who use the platform are probably less John Rambo and more Gomer Pyle.

@bigdavex: And many nerds would probably find it very appealing if they get told that they get to control drones and other tech stuff in the military. Then spend the rest of the day playing games as they always would have. It's not like the military only needs grunts nowadays, although I'd guess that there's still a lot more of the latter than any tech guys, which makes me wonder how many guys who join the miliary thinking they'll get to sit in front of a computer all day get put somewhere they don't really wanna be. Not like you have much control over where the military puts you from my experience. But maybe things are changing with how desparate they are for new recruits. Still, once you've signed a contract they own you for the duration of it and can do whatever they want.

There is no proof of them recruiting children, her argument has no merit

What she insinuating you can easily make the argument that the Army and Navy having NCAA football teams is secretly out there promoting other young guys on the field and encouraging kids who watch NCAA to recruit.

Unless the presented evidence they were this was just another waste of time.

@alastor529: The military has its own football teams that are playing in some professional college league? Really? And you don't think that this has anything to do with them trying to get seen and attract new recruits? Well, some people will fall for anything. "Oh no, everything we do is purely to help the people and all that. We have absolutely no ulterior motives ever." I'm sure everyone is smart enough to not get influenced by such things. Yeah, certainly.

That’s exactly what those teams are for: they ARE a recruiting tool.

“Hey kids, as soon are you’re legal age you can get PAID MONEY to PLAY FOOTBALL for the ARMY!!!1!”

When I served in the military I worked with a bunch of guys who signed up for 9 years when they were 15-17 years of age and by the time some of them were early 20s with 5 years Return Of Service due they were doing whatever they could to get kicked out.

@texasgoldrush: I know you think AOC can do no wrong, but this was a blunder on her part. Recruiting has to evolve with the times, in the past recruiters used phones to call leads and in the present, they use social media.

What does she think will happen if the military can no longer meet their recruiting missions, the military will go away? Nope, we still need a military whether they want one or not.

As for the USMC, they are a much smaller branch with a different culture than the Army and Air Force.

@ad1x2: But they should not use war themed video games as recruitment tools. It didn't need to in the past (before the Army's own game), it doesn't need to now.

And the Army was caught being deceptive as well.

And how is this a blunder on her part? The majority of Dems voted with her. This came about from the Army's deceitful practices.

@texasgoldrush: Times change, so recruitment methods have to change too. Phone calls aren't nearly effective and many recruits are in the age group that is more likely to be involved in video games and social media. If you take it as propaganda you have the right to ignore it.

And this is a blunder for AOC because despite having a Democratic majority in the House, it still failed by a large margin. That tells many of us that her colleagues are smart enough to know that the military is important and needs all of the legal tools at their disposal to get willingprospects to consider serving.

What would you rather happen, we stop using social media and games, and go back to the draft instead? Assuming you are eligible to serve, doesn't it make you feel better that you don't have to serve if you don't want to?

@Yomigaeru: Nearly 60 means it is in the 50's, and 50's are not all that old. It might even be considered middle aged these days, though on the back end of middle aged. Even 60's are not really all that old tbh

Age also means experience. It can also be construed that age means out of touch. But I tend to view old people as more wise than clueless.
