APB Reloaded beta targeted for late February

Game's official Twitter feed reveals late February start date for online shooter's trial period; closed beta registration details coming next week.

It has been a bumpy road, but APB's relaunch as APB Reloaded is set for 2011. However, eager gamers will have to wait only one more month to drive the streets of San Paro again.

The official Twitter feed of APB Reloaded has announced that the free-to-play shooter relaunch will enter a beta period at the end of February. A more specific start date was not mentioned. Further, next week developer Reload Productions will unveil details on how gamers can sign up for and access the beta.

The streets of San Paro will come alive again next month.
The streets of San Paro will come alive again next month.

APB, or All Points Bulletin, launched in late June to tepid reception. The online shooter logged 130,000 users by late August, but its developer, Realtime Worlds, collapsed and the game was shut down indefinitely.

Then, in mid-November, online game publisher GamersFirst announced that it had purchased the intellectual property rights to the game for an estimated $2.4 million. The publisher’s subsidiary, Reload Productions, is now in charge of development and maintenance of APB Reloaded.

For more on the original APB, check out GameSpot's review. And for further information on APB Reloaded and the studio's vision for the shooter's future, check out GameSpot's Q&A with Rahul Sandil, GamersFirst senior VP of global markets and PR.

Actually, being in closed beta, I can tell you that it's still HORRIBLE. Still cheaters present, which know how Gamersfirst plans on banning, and already have a workaround ready. The gameplay is still the same 4 missions over and over again. They've stated on the forums that nothing is really planned to change, and they're still struggling with the memory loss issue that plagued RTW. All in all, this game is just on course to siphon money from TWO companies.

Game had balance woes and limitations/repetition, but I still remember some classic street gunfights in APB -- some real big moments of great, spontaneous insanity present in no other MMO. Of course it's in completely different hands now from an ongoing development standpoint, so who can say where it goes beyond the February patch -- incidentally, that's Realtime Worlds' last ever in-house update for APB.

Two thoughts... 1. Previously PAID customers should get some sort of reward. I personally paid $70 for the game and would like acknowledgment of my support and hard earned money. (not specifically an unbalanced weapon\vehicle but something...) 2. Taking the first comment into consideration it would be nice if F2P isn't excessively based on purchasable items so us previously paid customers aren't left in the dust due to not wanting to dish out even more money just to get wiped again. Personal thoughts\doubts... Money talks, bullcrap walks. Who pays the most wins the most. Hopefully not but... I won't be handing out another $70 to play a balanced game (even though it wasn't before) patches would have hopefully smoothed out the obvious inconsistencies. Hoping for the best... ~Breeze~

I just don't want players to be able to get their hands on overpowered weapons and items if they pay a few bucks.

hate to sound like a cheapo, but considering it's relaunch being free-play, I am once again drawn back to giving this a go. I like the idea of a game that cuts through the usual template of "healer, tank, ranged" in an MMO platform. And it's modern setting adds an element that hasn't been exploited in this genre too much. Count me in. If the missions, animation and control is up to it, then this could be a lot of fun still

If they take it down the route of other popular online shooters. Such as S4 League or Gunz, then this is definitely a winning idea.

I have a feeling the business genius who decided to buy a disastrous failure of a game and relaunch it is about to regret their decision.

How was you constantly ganked in APB? You always knew when someone was coming after you. There was really no surprises. Please, tell you wasn't expecting a game that had like 10 mission total to be a solo quest adventure.

interesting, this time the game will have a REAL beta test? That's a big (though obvious) step in the right direction.

@FarmFreshDX, it's not just the technical problems that made the original version of the game collapse, it's the fact that it was so unbalanced against new players who never played Beta, or preferred lonewolf styles over joining a gang. I just hope they have means to help keep the game on a level playing field, and that it eases new, casual players in better than what what it was under EA & RTW, because I was constantly ganked in the previous version.

APB had a very interesting concept for an MMO, and I hope they can fix all the bugs and such that made the first game collapse.

"irishscott99 Posted Jan 4, 2011 7:05 pm GMT APB was horrible. Its character creation was outstanding though." This sums APB up in a nutshell.

Last year, APB was a disaster waiting to happen after it came out. Why? Yup, Realtime Worlds didn't even have the care in the world to fix it. that led to it's early demise. But all was not lost, as APB last year, got bought out by GamersFirst. And how about that? APB later this year is going F2P! As it should be in the first place!

I'd love to have a GTA MMO on the PC, but a crappy multiplatform console-centric title wont cut it. They should just stick this on consoles. How it played on PC felt like it was designed with the console in mind anyway, rather than PC controls.

I was never interested in APB mainly because of the monthly fee that MMOs have, the fact that it did poorly just kinda added on. But with this free I will be checking it out, hope they bring it up to the standard they originally envisioned.

If it's FTP I'll try it, but two things must be over come. First, FTP games generally suck because it's not about leveling or questing it's about your credit card and buying all the items you need to have fun. Second, APB sucked.
