ArchLord Updated Impressions - The ArchLord System, Castles, and Sieges

ArchLord is an online role-playing game that will allow one player to rise through the ranks to become the ultimate power in the game.

Massively multiplayer role-playing games not only let you slay fearsome monsters and explore a virtual world, but they let you do it in the company of other players in a social setting. With such games incredibly popular right now, the number of online RPGs continues to grow. This includes ArchLord, an upcoming fantasy game from Codemasters and NHN Corporation. Like other fantasy games, ArchLord will let you explore a medieval world filled with sword and sorcery, not to mention dozens of quests and adventures. We were able to go on a virtual tour of ArchLord's magical world of Chantra to see the sights, as well as some of the things that you'll be able to do in the game.

Mounts come in all shapes and sizes in ArchLord, from horses to even dragons.
Mounts come in all shapes and sizes in ArchLord, from horses to even dragons.

ArchLord takes its name from one of its key features. Basically, the game will have a system in which one player can become the ArchLord, or overlord, of the entire game. As ArchLord, that player will have control over the weather and climate, influence over taxes and the economy, and enjoy other perks, such as a giant dragon to fly around on and elite royal bodyguards for protection. While this sounds great, it won't last forever. Every month, the ArchLord can change, and this process will be determined by castles and sieges. There are three unique castles in the game, each controlled by a single player guild. The leaders of those three guilds then battle it out to determine who is ArchLord. However, ownership of the castles must be contested monthly. Basically, an outside guild earns the honor to besiege a castle, and the winners of that battle get to run the castle for the month. The leaders of those guilds then get to fight it out to see who the next ArchLord is.

These sieges can be pretty elaborate affairs, but that makes sense since they only happen on a monthly basis. Castles are formidable structures, with high walls and thick gates, and to successfully take one requires a lot of teamwork. Attackers will have the benefit of siege works that they can build, which include catapults and trebuchets that can pound on the walls. Attackers can also run up to the main gate and hammer on it until it collapses. Defenders, on the other hand, can sally out of the castle to keep the attackers at bay, but if the defenses are breached, the fight is then determined by whichever side can capture three of the five key objectives in the castle.

Of course, sieges will be limited to a handful of guilds each month, so the bigger question is, What will the other players do the rest of the time? From what we saw, ArchLord will have the expected amount of adventuring and quests in it that you encounter in other online RPGs. The wilderness is infested with all sorts of creatures to battle if you're looking for a random fight while exploring. Meanwhile, quests will take you deep into dungeons and other dangerous areas where you can battle high-level opponents and bosses, such as fiery demons and the powerful pharaoh king. Combat is tied heavily into the skill system, as you can select only a handful of your overall skills and assign them to slots on your character's combat bar. You can then activate these skills in battle, with the only limit being their recharge time and the amount of mana they require. Playing as an archer, for example, we had archery skills, such as triple shot, blinding shot, and piercing shot, in addition to our normal attack. While we could also use melee weapons, it made more sense to travel as a larger group, with players assuming different roles, so we had fighters who took care of the front-line combat while we provided support for a distance. You can go into battle on foot, or atop an animal mount. Typically, this means a horse, though we also saw more exotic creatures used as mounts, such as a desert ox that bears a strong resemblance to a dinosaur.

Dress up in your finest armor, pick up some wicked weapons, and slay lots of monsters.
Dress up in your finest armor, pick up some wicked weapons, and slay lots of monsters.

You can spend your time between battles trying to make stuff and exploring the world. Dead monsters can be harvested for various components, and crafting will have a big role in the game. It will be possible to create things such as transformation potions, which let you turn into powerful creatures for a few minutes at a time, though the majority of potions deal with restoring lost health or mana. You can use these potions yourself, or you can sell or trade them for a profit, of course. If sightseeing is more you're thing, then the world of Chantra has plenty of interesting sights, including a floating city in the sky that resembles a sailing vessel.

Because we were able to play as high-level characters in the open beta, we walked around in sleek, spiky battle armor that wouldn't look too out of place in an anime television show, but this is to be expected as the game was developed in Asia. We wandered around a typical human town to see the various merchant options for purchasing and selling many of these items. In addition to the expected blacksmith and other merchants, we also saw a safekeeper, where you can deposit money (useful because in player-versus-player mode other players can loot your corpse of gold if you're killed), as well as an auction house for exchanging items with other players. Between the interesting new ArchLord feature and the normal, everyday adventuring, ArchLord looks as though it should offer plenty for players to do. ArchLord is scheduled to launch on September 26.

I do not know much about ArchLord but to the idiots above that say you can buy gold from IGE and coast your way through WoW you are wrong. I have never needed to buy gold because its very easy to accumulate anyway but even if someone bought gold it would only help out in certain areas. It could help you get the epic mount. It could make it easier to raid if you do not have enough time to raid and farm by giving you gold for repairs and pots. Buying gold would not get you anywhere close to the best equipment though. All the tradeable equipment sucks. Raiding or rep grinding for bind on pickup gear is the only way in that game to get the best equipment. For my take on ArchLord. It doesnt seem like it would be that interesting to me. The grind to overlord would be impossible for anyone that played less than 10 hours a day I bet plus you would need a large guild backing you. This reminds me of the Grandmarshals in WoW. That honor system sucks too. The crafting system sounded cool. I do not want to slam a game I have not tried. I might try the game if I could get a free trial but it would have alot of competition for my time. FFXII comes out in 20 days and WoW xpack will be out around Christmas probably. I will not give them 50 bucks up front though to test the game out.

This game is a "Pot Spammer" game just like RF Online... except not nearly as bad. Still, the only thing RFO had going for it was the fact that it was extremely hard not to cheat, which made it sort of challenging. Archlord doesn't seem to have that problem. Although, you will still probably cheat/buy credits for no other reason than the only thing worth doing in a crappy game IS cheat. Yes... that goes for WoW as well folks. Pass on this. One day someone will make an MMO that actually does something FOR the people who play them, instead of the other way around. SOE tends to get bashed on a lot, but at least they offer something of a variety. of course, NCSoft does too... which is why I'm interested in Tabula Rasa. At any rate, MMO players - do yourselves a favor. Hold out until Age of Conan.

o man..i hope the flying system isnt the same as wow and i wonder if you can own an airship..if so..i think im in love..but..if its just for transport..eeesh, again? didnt it say that youre archlord for like..2 weeks or something without anyone being able to claim your title? it would be so much better if it was a constant fight to maintain yourself massive power struggles if theres no two week safety period there would be sooo many more player made faction and guilds vying for power:D:D:D which would be lush regardless of the neccessity to be hardcore im going to try this out im updating the beta as i type..i just hope they use time cards in the final version:S

I play in the beta currently and I was bored after 10-20 minutes. Nothing more than another korean grind fest (there's a lot of games similar to archlord around, that are actually for free). Game controlls are really bad, camera work is really bad, the whole world is grey (just like in Lineage 2), quests are boring, there's absolutely no lore, characters are poorly designed ("moon elf" ha ha ha). And the most funny thing is, that it have monthly fee and to be honest, I wouldn't force myself to play in it for free, not speaking about paying money for that crap. WoW wins, fatality.

Huh.... riiiight. This is going to be another money trap just like WoW. "Oh hey, ArchLord.. how did you get so good?" says Joseph on his mighty donkey. The ArchLord looks over, squints his eyes from his huge dragon with his Evil Armor +50 and says, "Oh, I went to www.ige.com and spent 500 dollars to get to this!" Wouldn't you just LOVE to be Joseph!? Wouldn't you!? GREAT. Be smart and avoid money traps like this.. it will only frustrate you that you don't want to cheat/farm/buywithrealmoney like the "Pro's" do. Instead you could always get something like NwN2. Complete with Castle Sieges, character customization, and all that good stuff. Minus the incoherent cussing that your mother will hear when you play ArchLord and lose a castle because little Johnny got a hold of his momma's credit card and decided he wanted to be Super Man with a million currency ingame.

With a little luck this game will be as successful as Shadowbane and RYL! Pointless perpetual pay-to-play PVP F O R T H E W I N ! Other than that I feel extremely attracted to the lithe blond toons in these screenshots - sexy and rugged like the lead singer for Judas Priest, yet somehow even more manly (if that's even possible). It's well documented that, since the dawn of time, effeminate berserkers of indeterminate sexual orientation have gotten all the action. A R C H L O R D ! pwns u so hard EDIT: 1st pag

Apart from the castle sieges this doesn't sound too impressive, and on top of that, it sounds like you have to be a hardcore player to get anywhere (and forget about becoming archlord). But it seems like a great concept if properly executed with the right content.

Graphics and stuff seem nice, but unfortunately lots of the Korean MMORPGs I've played lack much depth to make their games keep my interest for very long.

It would be nice to see some game play footage instead of these trailers. These trailers make it look bad ass, but I've heard bad things from beta testers =(

I must admit the beta was quite dissapoining. The landscape looks bland and uninteresting, the characters and ok but not quite sophisticated in design, the quests are boring and tell you nothing about the lore of the land. The limitation of classes and races to genders really bugs me. Only female elfs and male fighters, wth? If you are a PVP-monger it might be fun, I didnt delve into that, but EVERYTHING else is mediocre and boring in a very short time. There is little to catch you in any time as all of the great and good MMOs do once you enter their worlds.

it has potential, but too be honest, it won't be worth playing becasue of the monthly thing. the only thing that might be able to knock of wow is world of starcraft or something else blizzard makes.

seriously though it sucks im in beta right now and it honestly has nothing on wow. the problem is there just giving you all the good traits of the game but its the gameplay that counts and its where it blows. the engine is the same exact engine you will find in many low budget games such as rf online and hero. as is the combat. the fact is if your going to get this game believeing that you might become the next archlord so is everone else and you wont become it. there will be one guild that will take control of the archlord position every month and unless your in the guild you wont get a chance. honestly that is all this game has going for it and over 90% of the people will never reach that chance before they get so board of constant grinding to lvl 75 before they even are eligible for archlord. i have a 35 warrior and ive been bored of this game since lvl 10. on the other hand ive been playing wow for 2 years with 4 lvl 60's and im still playing.

Of course it will be a monthly payment, you would have to be dumb to think it wouldn't, high detail graphics, huge castle sieges, crafting, if there wasn't a monthly payment then it would be a miracle and guild wars is for cheapskates, i have guild wars but i also play world of warcraft, games are often better if you have to pay for them

Sound like a good game but it didn't talk about if it was going to have any monthly fees. If it doesn't count me in. So far Guild Wars is the best game without a montly fee, hands down.

Well from the the looks of this game it should be fun. Stuff like this sound like it will make it a great game "As ArchLord, that player will have control over the weather and climate, influence over taxes and the economy, and enjoy other perks." I hope this game will be one that you do not have to pay monthly to play.
