Ark Dev Responds Concerns About "Finished" Expansion

"We understand that this isn't everyone's cup of tea..."

Ark: Survival Evolved developer Studio Wildcard has responded to the criticisms of Scorched Earth, the dinosaur game's first paid expansion. Studio Wildcard announced this add-on last week, stating it was a "completely finished, polished" expansion for Ark, which itself is an unfinished game. Not everyone was happy with the fact that Studio Wildcard was putting out "finished" content for an unfinished game.

In the wake of this, Ark's reviews on Steam took a hit. While the overall user review rating is "mostly positive," the recent review tab shows a "mostly negative" score.

Now Playing: ARK: Survival Evolved - Scorched Earth Trailer

In a statement posted on the game's website, Studio Wildcard explained why it's launching an expansion pack before Ark is even finished.

"Our original vision for Ark always included the creation of expansion Arks, along with the infrastructure and technical systems to transfer data dynamically between live Arks," the developer said. "We determined that it is more sound to iterate on these systems during Early Access than after retail launch, given the significant risks involved if we didn't 'get it right.'

"While that meant unveiling the first expansion early, it also means an easier time integrating further post-launch Expansions into the Ark network. We understand that this isn't everyone's cup of tea, and we appreciate the enjoyment people seem to be getting out of this initial view of how Expansion Arks can work. Now that we have the systems in place to support them, we can ensure minimal integration issues with subsequent releases after Ark: Survival Evolved itself has launched."

Ark launched for PC on Steam Early Access in June 2015 and later came to the Xbox One's Game Preview program. The full game is planned for release on PlayStation 4, but since Sony does not allow in-development games on its platform, it hasn't been released there yet.

The game is now available for 40 percent off on PC and Xbox One, though this deal ends soon. The Scorched Earth expansion launched last Thursday, September 1, and can be purchased for $20.

Scorched Earth's new map features seven desert-themed biomes, including dunes, high desert, mountains, canyons, badlands, oasis, and a dragon trench. Each region as its own unique resources and ecosystems, too.

There are more than 50 new items included with Scorched Earth, including new outfits and structures, as well as new shelter in the form of tents. Also new to the game are whips, boomerangs, and flamethrowers, among other things.

As for the new creatures, Scorched Earth has all manner of beasts, including the camel-like Morellatops and the aforementioned Wyvern. There is also what's called a Death Worm featured in the expansion. Some of the new creatures can be tamed and ridden.

Scorched Earth also adds a new boss creature in the form of a deadly Manticore. Additionally, players will need to survive electrical storms and sand storms, and must also avoid heatstroke.

Additionally, the Xbox One version was updated recently to include, among other things, a graphical improvement that saw the native resolution boosted to 720p. The UI rose to 1080p. This update also adds the player-made Primitive+ mod, which itself has more than 100 new items. Additionally, the patch introduces two creatures, the Pelagornis and the Allosaurus, while it also brings fishing to the game with a fishing mechanic and a rod.

Despite not even being finished yet, Ark has sold more than 5.5 million copies across PC and Xbox One.

Cough, NO mans SKy ,cough, Street fighter 5.

The only thing sony doesn't allow is calling unfinished games unfinished- they are early access games in everything except the name. That's actually even more despicable and misleading.

I have already gotten well over 100 hours of gameplay out of the base game. This dlc was a day 1 purchase for me and its great. Even if they never finish this game I'll have gotten more value per dollar on it than any other game on console this generation. Certainly more value than another shitty assassin's creed or CoD rehash.

Did these developers get kicked in the head by a mule because everybody knows you finish work on the game before charging for DLC, not the other way around.

@moose-fitz: That's what I was thinking. PC gamers have so many more opportunities to get the game cheap that it should be able to offset what the devs do. If you find their practices shady, but you like the game, buy it on sale and by the time the milking occurs you will only have paid the price of one full game. Or wait a while for the complete game with milky expansions to go on sale together or appear on Humble Bundle. The Point Is, on PC it's not just black and white, there is a lot of grey area to only end up giving them what you think it's worth.

It's just the scam of early access. Like Google claiming gmail was in "beta" for years despite it being fully functional.

Nearly all devs that peddle in early access are simply snake oil salesmen. I'm sure they don't even realize it...as they hide behind their "art." But anyone that can step away from some pretty dinosaurs for a moment will clearly see that business practices at work here. This industry is truly at the lowest of all low now.

Gamers have created a free for all market. By buying this trash, they've proven to companies that a simple pinky-swear is all that's required to get people to fork over money. You almost can't blame the devs...it's just greed at work. I'm sorry folks; if you decided to fund early access in this day and age, you only have yourself to blame.

@drysprocket:

That's correct, it's dumb gamers that don't care where they throw their money that has allowed this nonsense to flourish. These early access developers are all scum and only in it to make money for unfinished products. And as I've said, it's dummies buying those games then later complain about the state they're in. mega facepalm

How restricted or unrestricted are developers for early access games compared to finished games? Do developers have more freedom keeping their game in an early access state(aka less rules and regulations to follow)? Do final release products come with more rules and regulations to follow giving developers more work for an equal amount or less money?

This studio has become the new EA when it comes to scummy practices, this its what early access its becoming, put a game on early access get money never finish the game, make paid dlc get more money and don't fix and finish the original game, this sounds exactly to **** you give me more money.

I have no problem with them doing this. I think a lot are more upset at how they teased it without saying it WILL be paid outright first.

@StHapns247: The game is in Early Access, it's not even finished. It's missing many core features, it still has many bugs and this new DLC adds a pay-to-win element to the game because now you can bring your DLC fire-breathing dragons to any server.

@dlCHIEF58: yes it is. My tribe has 3 people over in SE . We also have allied tribes, over there too. We so far have plant y here and a few small animals. Working on other stronger ones as well. It's effectively p2w because they can bring stuff over that others who have not bought it can not.

@jeyjey: And still not Pay to Win as you are not given those items, you must earn them in the game still before you can transfer them over.

@dlCHIEF58: did you have to pay to get it? Your logic would say it's not pay 2 win in clash Royal because if you still have to play to get trophies you are putting in work.

How about if they added an expansion that let guns onto primitive severs? But only if you bought it. Still have to work to get it.

New dinos that will make tribes stronger then others without them is as far as I am concerned p2w.

@jeyjey: do you have a wyvern? Do you know anyone that has a wyvern? Have you seen anyone with a wyvern attack a tribe? If the answer to all the of those is no, then you are assuming that it's pay to win. Especially given what you have to go through just to get one, cause you can't tame one. And given some of the stats, this thing is going to be veritable glass cannon.

@noctisumbra:If you get an weapon that would give you advantage to other players, it doesn't matter if you had to "earn" it or not, if you had to pay to get it, then it's already pay to win. Every player is working for progress in the game but the ones who pay the most are the ones who get the best rewards for they hard work.

Now, I haven't played the DLC but DLCs usually have items that are better than the standard items in the game so anyone who buys the DLC will automatically be stronger. Assuming the items are better in this particular DLC, just picture this: 2 players with 100 hours playing on a server, one pays for the DLC and the other doesn't, who do you think will have the advantage?

@Henry518: ah, but we are not talking about simple advantage here, we are talking about pay to win,and the belief that allowing wyverns to be transferred equate such a situation. This is simply not true, given both the difficulty of obtaining wyverns to their relatively moderate stats. Beyond that, an advantage is only good if one knows how to use it.

The problem is not the gaming companies...it's the gamers. Hardcore Ark players will fork over endless amounts of money to find new content for streams. This presents a new low to gaming. They will sacrifice what every gamer such as myself strives to do in the industry: to not get ripped off. Until these obsessed gamers that crave new content (at any cost) STOP funding BS like this, then unfortunately companies will continue to do it. Nobody is to blame but ourselves.

The spokesman here is just trying to divert from the reality of things by using buzzwords. Paid DLC should not be sold when your game is still not finished.

Now this is the definition of being greedy ****. DLC for unfinished game is not acceptable in this solar system. The "cancellation" of the free version of Ark was hint at what the future of the game business model is and I said the nicklediming just began and I was not wrong, like always.

I got a steam alert that this was on sale and guess what I am not going to bother with it since my 980ti hates it "played free period". Pushing *Paid* dlc "looks like an update not a real game changing popping wallet out kinda thing" even before the game is optimized and running like a game should, I don't even care its not "complete" but dam it really should be running better.

Original runs like an absolute turd on my 6700k / 980ti and is the worse running game I've played for years. I stopped playing it assuming they'd optimize but it seems I'm SOOL.

""While that meant unveiling the first expansion early, it also means an easier time integrating further post-launch Expansions into the Ark network."

I could be mistaken, but I believe this directly translates from the original weaselese into English as following:

"By working on and finishing paid expansions before the original game is complete it makes it easier for us to sell additional paid expansions post launch with less of a time gap between the release of the original game that obviously has cut content from it and the other DLC we plan on shafting our players with."

Releasing paid expansion for an Early Access game... that is how gaming has become.

"Please give us some more money even though you are still waiting for the game to be released"

I hope people will not support this kind of practices, but the Steam Top Sellers list shows otherwise.

@tachsniper: They're trying to recoup losses after they just lost a $40million lawsuit. Most lawsuits, however, don't allow for discussion, so it's very likely that they'll never speak about it - but they'd most likely have to abandon the game if they didn't find some other means to make money (given that most people that will ever play ARK have already purchased it).

Basically, one of the founders signed a non-compete agreement after he left another company, and he was found guilty of breaking the agreement.
