Ark: Survival Evolved Reviews Trending Negative On Steam After Paid Upgrade Announcement

Fans aren't happy that the original version of the game will be shut down and that the Unreal Engine 5 version will require a new purchase.

Ark: Survival Evolved has been receiving negative reviews on Steam since developer Studio Wildcard announced that it will be releasing a paid upgraded version of the game called Ark: Survival Ascended. Studio Wildcard also announced that all official servers for the original version of Ark: Survival Evolved will shut down in August, with the option to migrate saves to the new upgraded version.

Players on Steam have taken issue with the Unreal Engine 5 version of the game, because Studio Wildcard is charging for the upgrade and closing the official servers for the original version. It's important to note that players can still operate their own servers in Ark: Survival Evolved, but all of the official servers are being migrated to Ark: Survival Ascended. This also includes the servers for the Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game, despite Ark: Survival Ascended only releasing on current-gen consoles and PC.

One player with nearly 10,000 hours in Ark: Survival Evolved left a negative review, citing the server wipes and paid upgrade path. Another player left a negative review, simply stating that the game closing in August and the developer selling the game with all of the DLC again was unacceptable.

As for the exact pricing of the upgrade, Studio Wildcard is selling a bundle of Ark 2 and Ark: Survival Ascended for $50 USD on Xbox Series X|S and PC, with PS5 users only able to purchase Ark: Survival Ascended for $40 USD. The DLC will also be sold separately, split into two bundles each priced at $20 USD.

This announcement came alongside the delay of Ark 2 into 2024 at the earliest.

These people have always been scum.

They're the same people that released premium DLC DURING their early access phase

@dillan45: I fail to see how this is a good thing, or even related to the article.

@dillan45:

I'm not sure if developers/publishers have ever done this before on console, but as we are all seeing more and more often nowadays, once one catches wind of another getting away with something (in this case, ripping off its customers) best believe the "fire" will spread eventually to other platforms.

Better to stand united as consumers, and let our voices be heard that they can't get away with this shit, than to laugh and have the "at least its not me attitude"

So many just let the million/billion dollar corporations step on them, but if we all just stood together, they would have no choice, but to listen.

Too bad most people just say "its just a few dollars more" or "yeah, inflation." and just accept it.

That's what these companies literally bank on...

The masses are larger than the few, but we would rather stuff a few extra bucks in to Netflix bank account, or spend an extra $10 bucks for a new game release, because $60 wasn't enough. How about $20 bucks in Bethesda wallet for a Santa outfit in fallout 76 a few years back, or "paying to win" in diablo immortals?!

Pretty much every micro-transaction.

May not sound like much, but every little bit, adds up.

This all has to do with, how much we all take as consumers, and how far these companies/developers/publishers/businesses ect. Keep moving up the line, to see what they can get away with.

When is enough, enough?!

I'm not even an Ark fan, I just don't like seeing people getting stepped on by a clearly greedy move.

If it was just charging for an upgrade, I'd be fine with it, but taking away an option, so you have no choice, but to pay (again) for the upgrade (if you wanna keep playing) isn't right.

Oh well.

In other news, factory-building sim Satisfactory is likewise making the upgrade to Unreal Engine 5 and not charging people for it.

Many, many, many, MANY developers put time, effort, and resources into their games long after they have been released and don't charge their players for it. They do it as a sort of "pay it forward" process, knowing that if they support a game, when the time comes for a sequel, players will remember how the first game went and will buy it based on that.

You start charging people for updates, players will rightfully rebel (ideally, at least) and take issue with it.

If I am coming off as opinionated, it's only because I fear things like this will become standard for the industry if it occurs too often. We've already payed for TLOU five times over at this point, after all...

@mrbojangles25: Well, nobody forced you to keep buying the same game over and over again. The original versions of TLOU are still available. Nobody took them away from you, so this is a completely different thing.

I mean part 2 is coming to gamepass , the dudes gotta make some moneh outta poor players pockets , and they gave part one for free on epic i guess , and its not coming to ps5 as its exclusive to xbox , so they had to resell part one to steam and playstation .

@afromakka: It's not like Microsoft put a gun to their head and demanded they put Ark 2 on Gamepass or else. If they didn't find the deal to be potentially profitable they wouldn't have made it. You are aware that Microsoft pays big bucks for that type of exclusitivity deal, probably 8 figures in a case like this.

I could also accept if they charged an upgrade fee of, say, $10. But to charge nearly full price and to then also charge to rebuy DLC that customers have already purchased? That is far from industry standard. Look at the recent "upgrade" to Outer Worlds. There was an upgrade fee, but players didn't have to repurchase DLC. And I know this is a much larger update than that, but notably Epic has repeatedly said that transitioning a project from Unreal 4 to Unreal 5 should be largely seamless. It's not like assets had to be rebuilt or scripting rewritten. A major selling point of UE5 is its ease of use, especially in regards to the asset pipeline. This is obviously a major upgrade, but it is not an upgrade that should cost over $100 when everything is repurchased.

@Setho10: Well, way I see it the devs just wanted to point out to their fans that they're morons. They've been paying for everything so far, so surely they don't mind to keep paying. And while they complain, most of those folks will probably buy the new version anyway. Not sure if the devs are going to change their mind. I mean it's not like they could not have seen this reaction coming. Unless they're just as dumb as the fans they've been ripping off. Who knows? Greed turns people blind to many things.

@afromakka: It should be a free upgrade. Not out of entitlement or anything, but so it doesn't fracture the community into "pre-upgrade" and "post-upgrade" sections.

Clearly they are not hurting for money, as they have the finances and/or influence to pull a major Hollywood actor to star in their sequel.

Can't see this as anything other than a greedy, dick move by a shady developer.
