As Ubisoft Worries About a Takeover, Gameloft CEO Addresses His Company's Future

Vivendi now owns a majority of Gameloft, whose CEO also sits on Ubisoft's board of directors.

With French media conglomerate Vivendi looking like it plans to attempt a hostile takeover of Ubisoft, it has already gained control over another French game company, Gameloft. Its CEO, the brother of Ubisoft's CEO, has now spoken out about the situation and announced he will soon step down from his role.

Michel Guillemot announced his intentions in an email sent to Gameloft's employees today that has since been obtained by Game Informer. He confirms that Vivendi has obtained a majority of Gameloft's shares (a "meager 61 percent," as he puts it) through its hostile takeover. He also says that Vivendi's offer has reopened until June 15. This provides all shareholders who initially refused to sell their shares the opportunity to do so "now that these shares will not be the shares of an independent company but of a Vivendi-dependent company. Being a minority shareholder of a dependent company is usually not recommended."

Guillemot also reveals he'll step down as CEO of the mobile game company, but that he'll remain in power until a shareholder meeting on June 29.

"Until that change of management, I remain the president and CEO of Gameloft with full authority; no one else has the right to give you instructions! After that change, I shall not be in the company; a new management with a new strategy will have taken over."

He goes on to congratulate Gameloft's employees for creating a company that caused so many shareholders to refuse to sell their shares. He also speaks briefly about the changes to come, which he says could be "profound."

"There will be from June 29 onwards a new strategy with a possible integration of Gameloft's existing activities into Vivendi's," he explained. "The information published so far by the new owners show that the changes may be profound, for the creators: "convergence between creative industries," and for everyone else: "pooling of distribution networks." It is not my role to say if these changes will be positive or negative for you as it will happen after my watch."

Reports circulated earlier this week that Guillemot would resign in light of the takeover. It's looked as if Vivendi would attempt this for some time as it seeks to also take over Ubisoft.

Last year Ubisoft, which is headed by Michel's brother Yves, said it would "fight to preserve [its] independence" in light of an "unwelcome" investment from Vivendi. Since then, Vivendi has increased its control of the company, and as of April 2016, it holds an 18 percent stake.

In February, The Globe and Mail reported that the hostile bid on Gameloft was part of Vivendi's plan to "force talks with the Guillemot family and take over Ubisoft." Yves and Michel sit on Ubisoft's board, as do several other Guillemots.

In April, as it purchased more shares in Ubisoft, Vivendi claimed that it had "no plans" for a takeover of the company. In a statement released at the time, Ubisoft said it "not at all surprised by this latest statement from Vivendi, nor by the intent behind it. This is a confirmation of their habitual strategy of creeping control, in which they say they have no intention to take control of Ubisoft while steadily increasing their stake and preparing an offensive at the next Annual Shareholders Meeting."

Ubisoft's leadership has also met with investors to prepare for a hostile takeover.

We'll continue to monitor this situation as it develops.

Most of you idiots who think the take over would be good for Ubi are just barking up the wrong tree, the gaming industry needs plenty of publishers and developers the more the better wether they are crap or if they havent released many great games, back in the 90's early 00's you had plenty of decs/pubs now there's hardly any. Some of the own demise but take overs are not what the gaming industry needs

Regardless of whether you like Ubisoft or there games this is something that should never be cheered or supported. Sadly at the same time there isn't really anything that can be done to stop it at the rate things are going.

Part of me wants to think this is a part of evolution.
Everyone knows Ubi's last few years were... not creative enough. Most games were iterations of previously done stuff with minimal improvement that relied on previous glory. That period has lasted too long, so shareholders started to sell their shares to move to more "profitable"/"secure" companies.
If their games were better = sold more, shareholders would not dream about selling their shares, simple as that.

Vivendi is known for their ability to suck the life of a company, but is currently in a state that can only "grab" companies that are not doing great. Brutally speaking, they are like a bunch of vultures that aims at a "soon dead" animal, so they can eat it as soon as it dies or "help" it die.

But what does that really mean?
Well that means that the talented people within Ubi / Vivendi will reorganize (when Ubi is pushed into the ground), create new studios, new IPs, eventually new games that they were not able to create because of the shackles that Ubi put on them (to create mediocre games, instead of what they wanted to create).

It's a cycle that we have seen before, just this time, it's pushed by a hostile company instead of a natural decay of owner one. It will bring sadness for some people, but it will be just a short phase that will bring a new generation of studios that will bring a new generation of IPs/games.

Generally speaking, Ubi has grown too big/fat without the ability to constantly provide products that will satisfy our needs. Everything else is "nature".

Ubisoft is garbage now and everyone says so. So MAYBE this whole Vivendi takeover could reassert Ubisoft into the game world as a better and stronger company under a new uncursed name.

The last game I bought was AC Syndicate. I admit that I was always into Ubisoft games and few other publishers like R* and EA but the gaming medium is bigger than those 3rd party studios. even some other small studios make better games than rehashed $60 game from Ubisoft. If I put the plot aside then their games became just a random character with the ability to climb and do repetitive missions.

I wanted to care for Ubisoft but their games are so dead, stale, broken, unoptimized and repetitious that it doesn't really matter. Even if Vivendi takes over Ubisoft and things get worse, it won't matter cause those Ubisoft themselves killed all the IPs everyone loved and cherished.

Somebody needs to do something about Vivendi. It's BS that they're able to go about business the way they are. Them taking over Ubisoft might actually get me to stop buying Assassin's Creed games.

@Draconas_Lyrr: Wow. You like playing rehashes? That's why no one cares.

Edit:

I should explain more. I don't mean too appear rude. Most people feel as if some features should be better in many UbiSoft games. If people are saying the games are stale for multiple years only to be retorted by the majority screaming: "What?! UbiSoft is doing great! There games are fine!" It only gives companies a false sense of security. So in a way it's like gaming evolution. Because UbiSoft "fans" were so complicit, UbiSoft didn't challenge itself. Making it unable to compete with many devs. So people should really only blame themselves for NOT demanding more from the mosquito infested gene pool that was/is UbiSoft .

Ubisoft put themselves in this situation by releasing BROKEN games, that they knew was broken! They even prevented the press from reviewing their broken games until AFTER the game was released! They pulled this crap for years, so now the chickens....are coming home to roost!

@Carpetfluff: Didn't they used to own Blizzard and Sierra? When they made their best games too I'm pretty sure. Haven't done anything to doubt them over Ubisoft anyway, Ubisoft already make money grabbing crap.

@spaced92: They had Sierra after they made all their best games and ran them into the ground. In fact Blizzard are about the only company to come out the other side as strong; most were closed, broken up or emerged pale shadows of themselves.

I still think Ubisoft can actually get worse. I know for some of you that seems impossible, but I don't trust Vivendi. It seems to me they're eyeing the ever-profitable Ubisoft IP's - Clancy, Rayman, Assassin's Creed, etc - and want to utilize them in a mobile/f2p development strategy. Why? Sadly, it's lower risk and potentially higher payoff than AAA development. I imagine they'd keep The Division and Assassin's Creed going (That's Ubisoft's Call of Duty and Destiny a la Activision), but that's about it.

And even if Ubisoft has burned you in the past (and who haven't they burned...), I'd rather them keep at it. Let them beat this takeover threat and hopefully light a fire under their collective asses.

So... What's so bad about Vivendi...? What did they do? Were they the ones that made Ubisoft release the ending of Prince of Persia (2008) as a DLC or something (from what I've heard, the ending is the DLC, I don't know myself since I don't have the game)...? Were they the ones forcing Ubisoft to release Assassins's Creed yearly? Were they the ones that made Ubisoft release glitchy stuff (thank goodness I didn't get Unity at release)?

Actually, that's a good thing they released Unity glitched as heck, they offered a free DLC for it. This proves companies can indeed offer small expansions for free sometimes (well, it cost them, I am sure...).

But euh... yeah. What's the deal with Vivendi?

EDIT:And what's with GameSpot thumbs-ups? I always get one when I post. Do they give us thumbs-ups automatically because we post in here or sumthin'...?

@kaminobenimizu: First of all theres no ending DLC for PoP 2008 lol. Second, noone is forcing you to buy ubi's stuff. Just as they have the freedom to do whatever they want, which isnt gonna be the case anymore if vivendi buys them out. Whether you like Ubisoft or not doesnt matter, some people like them for what they do, for their own unique style that they have. Once Vivendi buys them out it'll be gone.
