Assassin's Creed Art Director Leaves Ubisoft After 16 Years, Joins Jade Raymond's New Studio

Raphael Lacoste is leaving Ubisoft to "set sails on a new adventure" with the team at Haven Studios.

The art director for Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed series is leaving the company after 16 years. Raphael Lacoste announced on Twitter that he's leaving Ubisoft to "set sails on a new adventure..." He subsequently announced that he's joining former Ubisoft teammate Jade Raymond at her new studio, Haven, which is working with PlayStation on a new IP.

Lacoste thanked the Assassin's Creed community, the other creatives he's worked with over the years, and Ubisoft in general for helping achieve what he did at the company.

"I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart our wonderful community and the incredible talents I've had the chance to collaborate with, over these amazing years," he said. "Thank you too, Ubisoft, for your trust and the fantastic projects we brought to life together! Bye for now, these years will remain unforgettable."

Lacoste worked on the very first Assassin's Creed game in 2007 and, as he said in his tweet, he worked on eight different assassins, though it's not exactly clear if he means games or characters. Whatever the case, he made a mark on the series in a significant way.

He is the latest franchise veteran to leave Ubisoft in recent months, following the departure of Assassin's Creed Valhalla's narrative director Darby McDevitt and game director Eric Baptizat.

A spokesperson for Ubisoft told Axios that the turnover rate at Ubisoft is "in line with video game industry averages."

In other news, Ubisoft will continue to support Assassin's Creed Valhalla with more expansions in the future, while work is beginning on an ambitious-sounding live service game called Assassin's Creed Infinity.

So he quits the studio at Ubisoft that's is transitioning to Service games just to move to another studio which its focus is on more Service games as well....so he did nothing to better himself or gaming....

1. We know next to nothing about the perks or what's different in the work culture of both places or why one would be more or less desirable for this guy and his particular situation.

2. Lol, choosing your own career and means of livelihood with an idea in your head of "bettering the gaming world"... I mean... seriously?

@doyoyo: The only reason I see of him moving is his friend Jade Raymond recruiting him as they were buddies as back as when she worked at Ubisoft.....

As of perks???.. doubtful as Heaven is an untested studio with everything to prove.

As I said it's not like he left Ubisoft because of the Service games they are pushing, as Sony specifically hired Heaven Studios to do exactly that....a service game.

He's making the right choice. It seems that no-one is impressed with the direction that AC is going with Infinity and Ubisoft is still rumoured to be a toxic environment to work in.

If nothing else, AC's always been a really good looking series.

@cboye18: I’ve liked quite a few of the AC games. They don’t all land, but enough do that I’m always interested to see what the next one is.

@mogan: This is true. They've always been amazing looking games, great art direction.

They've always managed to avoid the over-stylization that a lot of the other Ubisoft games suffered from of late, and I am thankful for that.

Some of the work this guy made was absolutely amazing! Just google him and check it out 😁! Curious to see where he goes next. Hopefully far away from all live services…

Too many drastic changes at Ubisoft.....his departure is totally understandable.
