Assassin's Creed Origins Director On Size Of The World

"I don't think of the size of the city is what matters."

The size of games is a much-discussed topic, and now the director of Assassin's Creed Origins has commented on that for the upcoming open-world game. Speaking to Game Informer, Ashraf Ismail said it's difficult to compare to past games since every project is different, but he said he's sure it's much bigger than Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

"If I compare it to previous games in the past, I don't actually know the exact numbers [for Origins], but I would say that it's at least twice the size of Havana from Black Flag," Ismail said. "At least."

While the size of Origins' world is bigger than Black Flag's, Ismail said he doesn't think size is really all that important.

"Having said that, I don't think of the size of the city is what matters," he explained. "It's really the content, the experience that you have inside of it. It's how alive it is. So we filled these locations with quests, with making each city feel unique to itself, why was it important to Egypt."

The interview touched on so many other topics about the game and the franchise overall. It's a great video that fans of the series may want to watch--check it out right here. Here are some other takeaways from the lengthy interview.

  • The Origins map is "pretty much" open right away, but not until after the introductory sequence.
  • There will be a lot of customisation options, though Ismail would not confirm if you'll be able to give main character Bayek a beard.
  • They want to keep the modern-day elements mostly a secret so players will be surprised. "I would rather have people be more surprised by the experience," he said. "If [the marketing department] want[s] me to talk about it I'll be more than happy to talk about it."
  • Ismail teased about the modern-day storyline in Origins, "I think people will be happy."

Origins launches on October 27 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and you can watch a lengthy gameplay demo of it here. You can also read our hands-on impressions of the game here.

This game is actually revitalizing my interest in the series. I loved the first 2, but by Brotherhood, the formula got stale as hell for me. Now I'm finally playing Black Flag and really enjoying it, minus the dated combat and inability to crouch. The world is gorgeous and interesting. Might actually give Unity and Syndicate a go after Black Flag, despite the negatives on Unity (even though, most of these were technical I believe). Its amazing how much time can be a factor in grabbing your interest in a series again.

Syndicate is great and it could have been amazing if they invested more time into some areas of the game. Origins looks AMAZING and has had more time in the oven. I am stoked.

It's really tough for me to invest any more money into AC given the royal $%^# ups of AC3 and Unity. Feels like they are just pumping money out of the fans for unfinished games. Story has to be dragging out

@mpl911: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Said_the_actress_to_the_bishop

"In the early 1990s, it was popularized as a recurring joke in the Saturday Night Live sketch "Wayne's World"."

If we're going to get technical, its origin is a much older joke going back to the Edwardian times. But hey, you got two thumbs up trying to one-up me, so you must be thrilled.

Whats the point of a huge world if frigging everything is marked on the map,or can be marked on the map any way or another, exploration is pointless, even Horizon Zero dawn fails at this, there's no sense of discovery. Elder scrolls/fallout do this part right, it doesnt cluster the UI with markers and shit, these games let the player explore.

Landmarks should be marked AFTER u find them, not before... There will be no Ubi towers anymore, but the eagle will most likely ruin any kind of immersion/exploration there is. These developers DO NOT understand this.

@deathBRINGER201: I enjoy the parkour gameplay. I find the control on that pretty tight. I also like the cinematic style of combat. That's not super tight but I enjoy it none the less. Oh, I also really enjoy the locations and historic settings. But the downside is the story tends to get messy and I HATE switching back to the future stuff. I really wish they took all that out.

@cjtopspin: It's the worst one in the series. You'll be waaay better off just powering through the story and moving on to the muuuch better AC2.

I'm hoping we see videogames get scaled back down to 8-12 hour experiences. While I enjoy playing a game in an open world it gets stale very fast, especially since developpers are aiming for bigger and bigger areas to roam around in. I might be in the minority wanting this, but, I have a family and a business to run and have no more than an hour to play on a daily basis, though, usually even then. These days I'm playing like 30 minutes a week. :(

@consolehaven:I get what you mean about shorter, you would rather get to complete a game sooner rather than possibly lose interest or give up especially playing 30 minutes a week.

Games standards have been raised by both the players and and developers and so it's expected that majority of games provide enough content for players.

There is always choice in genres and certain genres play shorter than others.

Just pick 2 games for example. one short which you can play when you're short on time. The 2nd game can be something more open world with more story which you can play on free evenings or weekends that you would have time for.

@consolehaven: Well, I also have a family and a job to do, and spent time playing one video game for 7 hrs a week. I. e., one hour per day during evenings. And I will finish that game maybe after a couple of months. And I don't see what the big deal is: you can enjoy it longer and you can save-up money, because you only buy a new video game after you've completed the first one. In my case - months and months later.

@consolehaven: So you want LESS content ???

Nobody forces you to go everywhere, do everything. For me, the bigger the better.

I love gigantic open worlds. I hate canyon-like, corridor-like environments.

@tevic: I don't know about less, but more varied would be nice. Also, I don't think of unlocking over 100 chests as "more content", I think of it as dragging something out as an attempt to feel like more content. Most of the missions in The Witcher 3 felt unique and seemed important story-wise. Collecting 120 Cockades in Unity does not. Thats all I'm saying.

@consolehaven: We still get those. Wolfenstein probably isn't going to be much longer than that unless you really take it slow, and you know CoD wont be. Prey was around there too unless you explored everywhere, same with Dishonored 2 and Doom. This last year have been pretty big on gigantic open world games, but there are still plenty of shorter, less padded out experiences too.

I always thought Ancient Egypt would be a perfect setting for Assassins Creed, and was stoked by the news.

But I also thought that about Unity

Thus, for all of my hopes, I have a funny feeling Origins is going to suck, or be mediocre at best.

I have a discussion for us fellow gamers! How historically precise will origins be the antiquity era (ancient era) was started by writing and records from the Greeks and Romans maybe the Egyptians? It was like 2,500 bc to 500 ad/ ce (depending on religion) is this going to be based off history or just imagination?

@PsychicKiller82: It's a AAA action adventure game. Origins will sacrifice historical accuracy for the sake of fun, compelling game design every time it needs to.

@PsychicKiller82: Probably, since that's been in every main game since the second one. I'll bet its not as precise and detailed as the information on Renaissance Italy or 19th century London though.

Even in that stuff though, there's been the occasional, "This landmark actually should exist here yet, but we thought it'd be cooler if it did." So, I doubt Ubisoft will let the database entries limit the game design.

I've been a fan of a couple of AC games but like many have been let down as of late. But this one does excite me in the fact that they've added the Darksiders 2 type loot aspect, the Dark Souls type combat, and the freeform climbing aspect of Zelda. I think this one will be the best since AC2, not that I have my doubts but I do think this turns the series around in a positive light. Just my opinion obv

lets be honest here ubisoft developers have made claims during many press conference`s before there history speaks for itself sorry but i do not trust ubisoft anymore what they show to the video gaming press is not the final product by the time it hits retail there history of lying to customers really has broken my confidence in them as a consumer ill keep my eye on it after it is released to see if they can keep there word however i doubt it

If its big and boring, its a fail, if its big , boring, beautiful and authentic, its still a fail. If its big , fun , lots to do, story and characters great, mechanics fun, then it works, like Farcry 3 or GTA. I have to FORGET I'm playing a game in a large world, I have to genuinely feel like this universe could exist, to be ultimately invested in a LARGE map. Like Oblivion, or fallout 3. But as soon as i feel like im not connected to the world, then i normally get bored real quick, uninterested and sometimes, even stop playing and go play something else. I have yet to play Skyrim all the way through, but I finished The Witcher 1 and 2 and Mass Effect trilogy over and over. But its all subjective. I would rather have a group of small areas that are completely different to each other than 1 GIANT area, where everything feels the same, wherever I go.
