Assassin's Creed Shadows Isn't Doing As Well As Valhalla, But That's Okay

It'd be more accurate to compare Assassin's Creed Shadows to Mirage, Odyssey, and Origins, Ubisoft says.

Just a week after launch, Assassin's Creed Shadows appears to be the success story that Ubisoft is in need of right now. Just hours after it arrived, Ubisoft confirmed that 1 million people were playing the game, and after the crucial first weekend, that figure jumped to 2 million players. One of the big metrics that the game has been judged by is its concurrent players on Steam, and while it hasn't yet surpassed the numbers set by 2020's Assassin's Creed Valhalla, that might be an unfair comparison to make.

Speaking to IGN, a Ubisoft source revealed that Shadows was responsible for the second-highest day-one sales revenue in the Assassin's Creed franchise, while Valhalla held onto its top spot. According to the internal email shown to IGN, 27% of Shadows' total "activations" were on PC--covering various distribution channels on that platform--with Steam playing a major role as this was the first Assassin's Creed game in several years to launch day-one through that storefront.

On console, Shadows was Ubisoft's best ever day-one launch on the PlayStation Store. Ubisoft also noted that player engagement is at "record levels" and feedback across "moderated, verified platforms" remains very positive.

Overall, Shadows is off to a good start, and while it doesn't match or exceed several records set by Valhalla, Ubisoft did note that the 2020 Assassin's Creed game benefitted from a "perfect storm" of conditions. This was during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic when people were forced to stay and work from home, and with the launch of the Xbox Series X|S and PS5 consoles, more people turned to video games for entertainment.

Other crucial factors here include Shadows launching in March--several previous entries were released during the lucrative Q4 period--the lack of an early access period as a selling point, and the premium tier of Ubisoft's monthly subscription service offering Shadows as part of its gaming library. Ubisoft+ is also available directly on Xbox consoles, which makes it more challenging to properly compare the sales of Shadows to other recent games in the franchise.

"Valhalla launched under extraordinary conditions--in the middle of a global pandemic, with widespread lockdowns and brand-new console hardware," the internal memo read. "It was a perfect storm we may never see again. That's why it's more meaningful to compare Shadows to entries like Origins, Odyssey, and Mirage--games released in more typical cycles. And in that frame, Shadows is already setting a new bar as illustrated above."

The reported success of Shadows arrives at a crucial time for Ubisoft, as last year's Star Wars Outlaws underperformed and saw company stock sink to its worst figure in a decade. Recently, there have also been reports that Ubisoft and its individual franchises might be up for sale, with Tencent, Microsoft, and EA possibly preparing to make a deal.

Dude my dude, it's doing worse than The Veilguard, which was an absolute disaster for Bioware. I don't recall exactly, but I think only Avowed did worse.

You hear this all the time early on. Its all PR spin, not saying the game did bad. However that's players not sales which is the usual tactics of these companies.

Give it a month or so and when ubisoft has to report its next financials I wouldn't be surprised to hear the typical "didn't meet expectations". Hope I'm wrong.

@lord2fli: When you've already decided the game is a success/flop, I don't think the actual numbers matter very much. : \

"success story" bahahahaahaha. :DDD

Well they should count how many people stopped playing the game and refunds too, otherwise they would be like one of those ignorant people on social media who also count bots as "my followers" and brag about it lol.

After they release offline patches for The Crew series, as why they removed developers of Saints Row, Ubishit should say "damn it's too costly to maintain our business" so they should announce a business suicide and afterwards they should develop toilet papers because it's more like in their alley. :DDD

So long as it's doing well enough for Ubisoft not to tank, then I guess it's doing well enough. If not, the next Assassin's Creed game might have a new publisher logo on the box. Either way, I'm sure the franchise will continue.

Not doing as well as Valhalla is an understatement. Shadow's is a commercial failure just like veilguard was, no matter how much woke game journos are in denial about it. If you want to play AC in Japan, Ghost of Tsushima is a better game.

Think Shadows selling less than Valhalla has less to do with the quality and more that everyone is generally fed up with Ubisoft as a company.

They've had many sexual harassment/ bullying cases thrown against them that are all swept under, furthermore the micro practices of locking content are grossly anti-customer. Even the port of Scott Pilgrim had a good chunk of its content locked behind Ubisoft being greedy ****holes.

Shadows does seem like the best AC game in a very, very long time so I'm happy for fans of the series. I just feel a large portion is frankly done with Ubisoft.

@RSM-HQ: most people haven't a clue about ubisoft's internal problems to do so with called sexual harassment. I say it that way since anything can be deemed that in todays society. However what most people who just play their games are aware of is how repetitive and samey all their games are on top of all the heavy micros. If this game fails that will be the reason and the SA stuff will have little to no impact since most don't follow games enough to hear or care about that.

@RSM-HQ: After they forcing online services in their games, even forcing singleplayer games online and then they turning off online aspects of games relatively too soon and thus they removing access to games everyone warns new comers about it. The guy says "I never played any Ubisoft game before, is Shadows is a good start" and people spam "don't buy the game, they remove your game from your library!!!" which tells a lot about why people wouldn't wanna buy from Ubisoft anymore, not that it's the only sin of Ubisoft as they are known for never fixing their games despite tons of people can't play the game. Who can say they won't remove Shadows this instant :DDD!!! A big aspect of why buying any Ubisoft game anymore is a bad decision is they will probably go bankrupt soon and therefore their games can't be accessed because thanks to double DRM, despite you may have bought the game on Steam you still need Ubishit shit.

Another aspect is Denuvo. The guy comes and asks "it's first time I'm using a PC but what's Denuvo", and everyone tells them "Denuvo is a poison makes you cannot play the game unless you are connected to internet and if Denuvo servers shut down say goodbye to whatever games that have Denuvo" and the new comer is like "damn son, I'll stick to playing games on my [whatever video game console] lol.

While video gaming killed they wanna raise the prices to $100. It's okay to ask whatever price but it doesn't mean you'll profit lol.

Anecdotally, I've heard mostly positive things from the people I know and/or follow who've played Shadows. Good graphics, stealth matters more, better story than the last couple games.

But Odyssey and Valhalla (and Hogwarts Legacy, even though it wasn't actually Ubisoft) really burnt me out on these kinds of huge open-world games. I'm probably going to wait a while on Shadows no matter what.

@mogan: I am about 12-15 hours into the game near the end of the first act I think. Its a classic revenge story AC game. There is a hidden animus subplot but so far its a group murdered my family etc. Hopefully when Yasuke is added the story has more to it.

There is a large gameplay loop that involves castles which at first are fun but have gotten a bit monotonous as the size of the castles and required kills to clear goes up.

As Yasuke is the warrior I can see myself clearing all the castles and any other larger area with him just because as a warrior (like in odyssey you could do both so it was real gratifying to start stealth then just clear out the remainder of the fort quickly with warrior skills) it feels like it will be so much faster then the stealth. Some places the stealth is a ton of fun but when a castle takes an hour to clear and you only really get a new piece of legendary gear and does not progress the story speed will be nice.

I skipped Mirage but so far odyssey and origins were a lot better stories. Valhalla had a better start but just dragged on too long.

Cutscenes have been pretty good but Noae face is somewhat wooden and could use more expression. I can see why Japanese people would not like this game for the story as it seems contrary to what I envision (granted limited knowledge) Japan would have been like. Ghost feels much more accurate to the times and the gameplay is better.

Enjoying the game but a solid 7/10. Biggest gripe is the Field of vision or zoom out function is only on the PC (I play console) and the action part of the game makes it difficult when you cant see the 5 enemies walking up behind you to slice you up. For me this is essential in a stealth action game so you can see what is happening around you and adjust.

@mogan: Some of my friends who skipped Assassin's Creed since Syndicate tried Shadows, they all say the series turned into Metal Gear on nonsense long cutscenes and it's also like bad copy of Bioware games on cringy romantic character dramas going on. It's more like less gameplay, more dramatic display. Some of my friends burned their devices they played the game on, only one of them didn't refund it because she loves romantic stuff lol.

@guitarwarrior66: The romance stuff can be turned off, it isn't the least bit integral to the game.
