Assassin's Creed Shadows Still Hasn't Made A Good Argument For Why It Has Two Protagonists

The game looks incredible, especially the new stealth mechanics given to Naoe, but the two protagonists feel like an odd storytelling choice.

The next Assassin's Creed is once again featuring two playable protagonists. However, instead of having the choice of playing as a man or a woman (like in Odyssey and Valhalla), Assassin's Creed Shadows takes a page out of Syndicate's book and sees you play as two separate characters: a shinobi named Naoe and a samurai named Yasuke. Beyond the fact that it seems like Ubisoft is incapable of making an Assassin's Creed game with a woman as the sole lead, there doesn't seem to be a good reason as to why Yasuke (a real person from history--a first for a protagonist in the Assassin's Creed franchise) is also playable. Really, I can't see any reason as to why Assassin's Creed is doing two playable protagonists again, especially after seeing 40 minutes of the game in action.

Ubisoft has not done much to explain why Shadows needs two playable protagonists either. In marketing materials, the team has described the decision as its way to deliver both the shinobi and samurai experience, an argument that doesn't hold much water in a post-Ghost of Tsushima world. But I was willing to hold my judgment until I saw the game in action--perhaps the gameplay differences between Naoe and Yasuke are so large, it makes sense to separate them into two separate characters.

Now Playing: Assassin's Creed Shadows Gives Players Two Unique Ways to Play.

Having finally gotten a chance to see 40 minutes of gameplay at Summer Game Fest, I'm left more confused than ever--Shadows does not look like a game that needed two playable heroes. The preview that I saw began with a short mission in which Yasuke traveled to a village and took care of the samurai ruthlessly ruling over the citizens, only to then meet up with Naoe and discuss the best way for taking out the corrupt official in charge of said samurai. At that point, the demo covered the subsequent mission, but in three different ways. First, I saw Naoe infiltrate the official's castle under the cover of darkness and stealthily take out guards without raising any alarm. Next, I saw Yasuke go through the same castle but during the day, muscling through guards and breaking down locked doors like a raging bull. And finally, I saw Naoe once again go through the castle but this time during the day and taking a more direct approach that saw her fighting enemies out in the open rather than hiding in the shadows.

That last segment really baffled me because it provided proof that even though Naoe could not take on groups of guards as easily as Yasuke, it showcased that she could fight groups of enemies. And if Naoe can tackle the game from both a stealthy and open approach, then it questions why Yasuke is even in the game at all.

What makes it even weirder is that Naoe's gameplay just looks way better than Yasuke's. Yasuke seems to play like a generic action hero, smashing enemies with powerful slam attacks, cutting through their defenses with his katana, and blasting fools with a gun. Naoe, on the other hand, is designed with a lot more tools at her disposal, giving her multiple ways to solve problems. She has a grappling hook to flip between rooftops, uses throwing knives to shatter light sources and create patches of darkness to sneak through, can latch onto the ceiling to avoid the gaze of patrolling guards, uses a reed to breathe underwater, has a hidden blade to take out enemies silently, and is able to go prone and crawl along the ground to better hide her presence--her gameplay looks like a feudal Japan take on playing as Sam Fisher. It remains to be seen how smart the enemy AI is--Assassin's Creed is very hit-or-miss when it comes to that--but if it veers toward the more intelligent side, then playing as Naoe looks it will be way more fun than Yasuke. Her stealth gameplay seems geared toward looking at levels as if they're puzzles and the various tools you have on hand--some of which seem to have limited uses--are the building blocks you must use to construct a solution.

Naoe could have carried Assassin's Creed Shadows all on her own.
Naoe could have carried Assassin's Creed Shadows all on her own.

And like I said before, Naoe can clearly handle herself in a fight, so it's not like she has to commit to stealth for every mission. Unlike Yasuke, who can tank hits and smash through enemy armor, Naoe has to rely on parries and dodges to create openings in an enemy's defenses before quickly striking. It's tricky to tell without actually playing the game myself, but it looks like combat takes on a more intriguing strategic quality when playing as Naoe, as a misstep hurts her a lot more than Yasuke, so she has to be aware of where every enemy is at any given time. Like her stealth gameplay, Naoe's combat gameplay appears to be structured to make every enemy into a puzzle that you have to solve in order to defeat them. I don't get the same vibe from Yasuke, seeing as he seems so powerful that strategy doesn't appear to be a big part of his gameplay. If anything, Yasuke feels somewhat tacked on while Naoe looks like the clear standout.

All of that said, I should point out that sometimes Ubisoft keeps its reasoning for why there are two playable protagonists a secret for narrative reasons so that could be the case here--even if Naoe is the better gameplay option, it's possible Yasuke brings something to the table in a storytelling sense. Valhalla is the most-recent example of this. In the previews leading up to Valhalla's release, Ubisoft hid the reveal that Eivor Varinsdottir is canonically a woman (despite the last name clearly giving it away) but also the reincarnation of Odin (or "male Eivor"), thus explaining how Eivor technically has both a woman and man's DNA when someone relives her memories. Since Naoe and Yasuke seem like two entirely different people, that's probably not what's happening in Shadows. If I were to guess, I assume whatever new modern-day protagonist we're playing as is the descendent of both Naoe and Yasuke, meaning they'd be able to see the lives of both individuals leading up to whenever they conceive an offspring at the game's end. That's just my little theory though and even if it's true, it's not enough to explain why Ubisoft needs two playable protagonists to tell that story.

Ubisoft claims that Shadows uses two protagonists to embody two different fantasies, but both could have been attached to one character.
Ubisoft claims that Shadows uses two protagonists to embody two different fantasies, but both could have been attached to one character.

Again, maybe there's a story-driven reason for why we need to play as both Naoe and Yasuke, but just in terms of gameplay, Yasuke looks to be redundant. It's obviously way too late to change anything now with Shadows so close to release, but Ubisoft should have made Shadows to have just been Naoe's story. It looks like her gameplay could have easily carried the whole game all on its own. Here's hoping Shadows has you play as Naoe more often than Yasuke, similarly to how Syndicate had you play as Jacob more often than Evie.

Assassin's Creed Shadows is scheduled to launch for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC on November 15.

Definitely reckon we'll see at least one story reason for the dual protagonist system being used again. However, this has been a sticking point for me that I just want them to get over: Ubisoft are really weak at writing for multiple protagonists. They just about made it work in Origins by decimating the amount that Aya actually did to 3-4 missions. But Syndicate, Odyssey and Valhalla all failed miserably to handle the player choice aspect. Syndicate was the best of the worst as it had set missions for each character, but I probably would have been perfectly fine with them creating all of the missions for a single character. Odyssey and Valhalla, on the other hand, had the problem that I reckon Shadows is going to suffer from: because they need to account for multiple options the player can pick from (who they are playing as in a mission, previous choices made etc.) they are just going to create a pair of bland characters that will react with the bare minimum of emotion to ensure that they don't have to put in too much work in the story department to account for all of the possible options, whilst also creating a cast of supporting characters that will get minimum time with the main characters only to have something terrible happen to them and expect us to be sad that the person we've spent 30mins with had something bad happen (see the Sciropescire section of Valhalla, and a character from the start of Odyssey who is inexplicably seen again in the latter half of the game).

I really hope that whoever at Ubisoft is pushing these choices finally realizes they just cannot make it work, and pull back in time for Hexe to be a linear story told in a sandbox environment.

It’s AC. If it’s historical fiction eye candy with sufficiently acceptable action gameplay, it’ll achieve its goals for all of its stakeholders. It’s not a series that’s ever let tight and elegant design guide it.

@dushness: yeah Valhalla was one of the most boring things I've ever played - have the DLC but couldn't bring myself to suffer through it. Only way I'm giving this shot is if the word of mouth from players is phenomenal.

I wish Ubisoft would just abandon the Assassin's Creed title and let it go peacefully. It's just like how they drag Tom Clancy through the mud with all of their titles that would make that guy roll over in his grave with shame.

They don't have anything else to rely on outside of Siege. Completely creatively brankrupt, so they milk what's left.

Not in the article nor in the comments is anyone going to mention the original Tenchu Stealth Assassin? :p That had dual protagonists and worked exceptionally well. Was also at a time where such a thing was really uncommon.

Wait... does this just mean I'm old?!

@HAWK9600: To be fair to Syndicate, it was the first time in the series that we got the opportunity to play as one of two characters. It was a fun experiment, but it should not have been carried forward. Whilst I enjoyed Origins, the sections where you play as Aya were painful and came out of nowhere. Having the choice to pick your gender in Odyssey and Valhalla made the story feel weak as there were less powerful character moments. So Shadows going back to the Syndicate formula may be an attempt to address that?

Biggest problem for me is the same it has been since Origins: Ubisoft studios cannot handle stories with choice well. They excel at linear stories told in sandbox environments, but the instant they let the player choose the order of the stories, they instantly hamstring themselves and can't build the relationships that made their earlier AC titles work so well.

I reckon that Shadows is going to have the exact same story problems that Origins/Odyssey/Valhalla had, and I'm hoping that they realize after this that the choice aspect needs to be dropped.

@ocinom: Except for its basic stealth, "towns" with 20 people in them, dated graphics, etc. I just played GoT on PC and really liked it, but AC worlds are far superior when it comes to rendering of cities and environments. Not to mention the collectathon you do in the game is just like any AC game, except the collectables are lame. I'll give GoT having a great combat system, but it does so only with the katana. Shadows will have multiple weapons and different playstyles across characters.

In all seriousness, GoT was inspired by Kurosawa stuff and it shows through in many ways.

AC was novel once upon a time but now it's a dried up cow we're still trying to get a last few drops out of. Story's become inconsequential.

Oh, and it is not true you play as Jacob more than Evie in Syndicate, in fact, in one DLC, Evie is the sole character you play as.

@Ayato_Kamina_1: We all know the real reason why, and you can stop pretending since this website is anonymous. According to white liberals, diversity involve themselves and bunch of asian women and bunch of black dudes. This is because many whites have fetish over asian women and black men, so they want to reflect this narrative in the video game that they created. Ubisoft would never have asian man as protagonist because they look down on men of color that are not black. Just check Ubisoft executives, they are all whites. If they truly care about diversity, why only hire white people as executives?

@donniefabuvel: Not sure what you mean by pretending as It's really a non-starter for me though. I've not had a problem with ethnicity / gender of the characters I've played so long as the game has been solid and the narrative decent. It's the same with the Star Wars series... yes they're pandering, but it doesn't anger me. Story being bad or the writing being terrible does though.
A good product is a good product. Shoe-horning in representation will not make a good product bad, and it defintiely won't make a bad product good.

Ubisoft could have avoided the whole drama surrounding this game by just giving us a character creator. This way you could play as east asian, southeast asian, indian, white, trans, black, middle east, whatever in the inclusivity letter.

Not like I am buying this game day one lmao I dont have much concern. imagine paying a ubisoft game day one how shit is that just wait for a few month these games on sales immediately. get ubisoft game once its atleast 70% discount usually its about 2 years post release.

This. Not sure why devs are so against this. Same with Star Wars Outlaws and many other games. Just let us choose who we want to play. Why is it that hard? I want to make an Avatar that I feel is me, I think most people do. Just record two sets of dialogue, male and female (oh thats problematic for them isnt it?) and let me choose how my dude looks. Its such an easy win but no, we cant do that, we must force representation!!

@s0ldier69: Whilst I don't mind the representation aspect of the game myself, I do agree that if Ubisoft want to give players the choice of who they play as, they need to create a game that lets them do that. If they brought back the MP from Brotherhood/Revelations/3/4, give you a character creator for a modern day character and start moving the modern day story along through that, whilst creating some historical stories as to why we need to jump into the Animus occasionally, they would be able to cover all of their boxes without having to ruin the single player stories:

- Always online multiplayer - check
- Battlepass style progression for retention - check
- Diversity and inclusivity for those that want it - check
- Easy to update live service - check (they could reuse some of the single player models to introduce new customization options/settings)

Am I saying this would be good? No, it'd be the same as every other live service thing out there, but it would check the boxes for the management team and hopefully give the single player stories a chance to exist without their interference.

On paper, you could have something like Shadow Tactics (which I have little doubt is 100 times better than this) where you can have diverse character gameplay dynamics working off each other.

But that would be too clever for Ubisoft. Mostly going to passively play this and do the same thing over, and over, and over until your god damn eyes bleed.
