Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell Movies Getting Sequels - Report

Plus, report claims a new Assassin's Creed game may come out in January 2017.

Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed movie isn't due out until December, but now another report has emerged that claims a sequel is already in the planning stages. A representative for the movie's Taiwanese co-financier Catchplay told Variety today that producer New Regency is looking to turn both the Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell movies into franchises that span multiple releases.

Assassin's Creed, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, comes out on December 21, 2016. Meanwhile, the first Splinter Cell movie starring Tom Hardy and directed by Bourne veteran Doug Liman, is penciled in to come out sometime in 2017, according to the report.

A previous report claimed that not only was a second Assassin's Creed movie in the works, but that Fassbender would return to play the lead role. This was not mentioned in Variety's report today.

Perhaps more interesting is that Variety's story also mentions that "the next version of the Assassin's Creed video game is reported to be released in January 2017." No such announcement has been made by Ubisoft.

The publisher historically launches new Assassin's Creed games in the fall, so January stands out as a bit odd. It's not uncharted territory, however, as Ubisoft launched a new Assassin's Creed game--the 2.5D Assassin's Creed Chronicles: India--during that month earlier this year.

Back in January, Ubisoft announced that it will not release a new entry in the core Assassin's Creed series this year. Previously, games in the series were released on a yearly basis.

The next big Assassin's Creed game is rumored to be set in Egypt and is reportedly called Assassin's Creed Empire. According to the report, it will launch sometime in 2017, perhaps January 2017 if Variety's report turns out to be accurate.

Reached for comment after Variety's report came out today, a Ubisoft representative told GameSpot, "Ubisoft has not made any announcements about the next Assassin's Creed video game beyond stating it will not arrive in 2016." The company did not comment on the Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell movie rumors, however.

Ubisoft is one of those companies that can make me hate something I actually want to like.

I see Ubisoft is taking the same approach to film-making as they do with games, franchise the hell out of em'!

I'm not hoping the movies are bad or anything, but I feel like a sequel should be born from audience demand... you know, based on their feedback from the first film, so this seems a like they're jumping the gun a little.

@rosinmonkekyx17: Well, they better hope it doesn't bomb like F4, which already had a sequel planned long before it was out.

@SpicyRamen10: Fallout 4 was great

Except for the endings...

Then again, no ending could possibly match Fallout 3's or New Vegas's

Hope they fail out of the gate, costing the studios many millions and further losses in having to hastily cancel these "Preordered" sequels.

I had not heard there was going to be a Splinter Cell movie. I'm interested in seeing both these movies and I hope they're at least entertaining even if not great. I enjoyed Prince of Persia for what it was- separated from the game (which it wasn't that far off from anyway) it was fine as a popcorn flick. It could have been better, even just as a movie, but that's besides the point. I guess Ubisoft has a decent enough track record with their games to movie adaptations that I can still hold out hope these two will at least be half way decent films. Plus I have found that I enjoy Tom Hardy in every movie I've seen him in so far (and even realizing recently, having watched it again, that he was in Band of Brothers was fun too).

Given that Tom Clancy is a household name, the Splinter Cell movies have the best chance of being profitable. As far as them being good...that's another issue. I wonder how close they will stick to the source material.
