Assassin's Creed Valhalla Confirmed As Vikings Head To England

Assassin's Creed: Valhalla has been officially named, confirming the rumors about a Viking setting.

At the end of the livestream revealing the Viking setting of the next Assassin's Creed game, Ubisoft announced the game's official title: Assassin's Creed Valhalla. A full trailer also released April 30, showing off the new protagonist and some brutal combat. The game will come to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC, and Stadia in Holiday 2020. The Xbox versions will support the new Smart Delivery feature, giving Xbox One purchasers access to the Xbox Series X version as a free automatic upgrade when the console launches.

As previously rumored, Valhalla takes place during The Viking Age. Occurring between the ninth and eleventh centuries, The Viking Age occurs roughly 100-400 years prior to the events of the original Assassin's Creed. That could mean that this game will continue the origin stories of how the Hidden Ones and The Order of Ancients went on to become the Assassin Brotherhood and Templar Order, respectively--a narrative first started in Origins and continued in Odyssey. Origins director Ashraf Ismail serves are creative director for Valhalla.

Now Playing: Assassin's Creed Valhalla Story Details & Characters: What We Know So Far

The storyline will cap off some of the threads we've been dealing with in the series for years. As with Odyssey, you'll be able to play as a man or woman, both named Eivor.

In the artwork used to announce Valhalla's setting, a Viking warrior separates two different scenes. On the left, you see Viking raiders sailing in longboats and on the right you see Viking raiders attacking English soldiers. The Viking warrior in the middle is holding an axe, with the symbol of the Assassin Brotherhood engraved into its blade. Additionally, there is a raven flying over the shoulder of the Viking, which could suggest the bird takes on the in-game role of reconnaissance that the eagles Senu and Ikaros did in Origins and Odyssey, respectively. In Norse mythology, ravens are seen as the eyes of Odin--so getting a drone-like view of the world through one would fit into the Viking theme of Valhalla.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla will be the first new game in the series since 2018's Odyssey. Instead of returning to the franchise's typical annual release schedule, Ubisoft instead used 2019 to further flesh out Odyssey with two massive DLC expansions, Legacy of the First Blade and The Fate of Atlantis. Both DLCs were split into three episodes each and together all six chapters almost doubled the length of Odyssey's story.

Cool trailer, but zero gameplay. If there's one think I hate, it's game trailers that have no form to how the game will actually look and play, even a few clips would have been nice. You can make CGI look like anything, but you can't push gameplay graphics past what the systems are capable of.

Cool, but I'd like to see something set in a culture we just don't see or has never been explored. Maybe India's age of myth, or something around those ancient artificial islands in the pacific.

This will be the least stealthy Assassin's Creed game to date.

@Dimebag_Darrell: Definitely. And I agree the assassination and stealth aspects is what made the games stand out in the first place...

...but I gotta say, I prefer the current games way, way more. The older games were just weekend rentals for me. I just wanted to continue the story. Never liked stealth. The current games have gotten me to actually buy them. There is just more to them.

So I agree the games were better as stealth games, but I like the current ones way more.

@Dimebag_Darrell:

you are aware Vikings do a think called raids right? there were MASTERS of stealth to accomplish goals. it is a myth they only did noble fights. so long as they won and got goods they did not care how they did it and often embraced not fighting a land battle to raid nearby towns in silence.

there is a good reason loki the trickster god is one of the main gods after all.

now I will say ubi 100% have ignored stealth recently but lore wise it could work.

this is more stealthy setting than gangs of UK or the French revolution/ American war for indipendance tbh. atleast the setting allows for stealth even if they will nto use it.

@the1396: There's a difference between Viking stealth and Assassin's Creed stealth. Viking's were stealthy in their approach. Once the attack was in progress, the stealth only lasted until they were pillaging the town.

Assassin's Creed used to allow players to play stealth for as long as they liked, or at least as long as their skills allowed them to. Now stealth is just an afterthought because the gameplay is tuned to combat and combat is dependent on gear.

And gear is balanced towards pushing the player to spend on MTX because Ubisoft is doing everything they can to make all their games vending machines with "opportunities for repeat player purchase transactions" or whatever the BS phrasing was they used at that shareholder's meeting a few years back about constant MTX buying.

@Dimebag_Darrell: AC hasn't been stealth in so long. They should just call it "Warrior Creed" at this point.

This will be a violent blast!

What they need to do is figure out story wise how to set one in the far future. I'd stealth kill on Mars!

Valhalla, huh?

Wonder if another certain studio’s success with that same locale had any influence on Ubisoft deciding to go the Viking route.

😉

-Take that tin foil hat off your head, Ninja!-

Regardless of what motivation the team had I’m sure fans of the Assassins creed games will be chomping at the bit for this title. If we are lucky perhaps this next installment will have more of a splash when it drops much like some of the earlier titles or even Origins a few years back.

I must say, I think releasing new installments in the franchise every 2 years is a better fit for Ubisoft as it gives them enough time to make improvements in gameplay and give fans more in the way of new additions and modes to the usual AC formula. Speaking of, as much as fans no doubt loved the annual AC releases it just wasn’t enough of a lay off to differentiate subsequent entries.

If Origins and Odyssey are an indication of how this next installment will be received than I think fans can rest assured.

-CONSPIRACY THEORY NINJA APPROVED-

just waiting for the day they finally make an Assassins Creed set in Ancient Japan.

Shoguns, Ninja's, Cherry Blossoms, Shurikens, Bo Staff's, Smoke Bombs, Horses, Armor, Clans, Ronin, Ancient Japanese Supernatural law, Dragons etc... hell, that setting is PERFECT for an Assassins Creed game.

I'll just have to wait for Ghost of Tsushima in July.

@hollywood1: They won't do it. Ubisoft has had over a decade to do it and they've stuck aggressively to specific parts of the world. Mostly to places that are in Europe or have had some large impact on Europe.
