Assassin's Creed Valhalla Shows Off Mythological Dangers In New Video

Assassin's Creed Valhalla will retain its blend of history and mythology that was established in previous games when players explore the dark ages of England. Vallhalla focuses on the historically accurate Viking invasion of England in 873 AD and allows you to meet historical figures from that era. But not everything will be drawn from the history books, as there will also be more supernatural elements that you can encounter and battle over the course of the game--one of which was on display in a recent gameplay demonstration.

According to narrative director Darby McDevitt, exploration of the game world will unlock mythological adventures, which exist separately from the main campaign. One of the creatures shown off in the Future Games Show Gamescom video was the Black Shuck, a ferocious hound.

"The Black Shuck is a particular piece of mythology that's very, very common in England," McDevitt explained in the video. "There are a lot of stories and tales about black dogs that roam the night. The Black Shuck is particular to East Anglia, but there is a lot of black dog phenomenon found around England."

Other more fantastical threats include the Daughters of Lerion and the Lost Drengr of Ragnar Lothbrok. Cordelia, Regan, and Goneril are inspired by the legend Leir of Britain and will require players to explore the region of East Anglia before they can meet and battle the deadly siblings.

The Lost Drengr of Ragnar Lothbrok exists as an optional challenge, tasking you with taking on six powerful warriors who seek a worthy death so that they may be reunited with their fallen king in the Nordic afterlife of Valhalla. "You'll find these Drenger scattered throughout England and Norway, and they each have a story to tell," McDevitt said. "Each of them wants to die in a glorious battle so that they can be with their beloved Ragnar in Valhalla. Eivor will have an opportunity to meet with them, get their side of the story, and then send them to their ultimate reward."

Assassin's Creed Valhalla releases on November 17 for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions will also be made available after launch, although that date has yet to be confirmed. Check our out pre-order guide for a breakdown of all the special editions that will be available.
