Asura's Wrath First Impressions

Capcom is no stranger to over-the-top action games. After all, the Japanese publisher is the company behind the Devil May Cry series, God Hand, and several other action spectacles. It seems the company is now trying to best all of its previous efforts with Asura's Wrath, a brand new IP that, if the trailer Capcom released at the Tokyo Game Show is any indication, could come close to being one of the wildest and flat-out insane brawlers out there.

Capcom is promising a new type of action game experience with Asura's Wrath but has released few details at this stage as to how it is hoping to achieve that promise. From the trailer, it seems like the game will be a full-on third-person action brawler. We first see the game's battle-scarred protagonist on a battlefield, impaled by several wicked-looking spears. A red-faced enemy we're assuming will be the game's main baddie orders his army to unleash another volley of spears, but our hero manages to forcefully remove the spears skewering him before charging full speed into his foes.

What happens afterward is a series of fast-paced action scenes where the game's protagonist takes on foes using weapons, such as a large stone column, blocking a swinging broadsword with his shoulder, grabbing two opponents, crushing their skulls together, and more. The trailer's craziest moment comes at the end. An enormous, planet-sized foe dwarfing the planet Earth pushes its hand into the atmosphere, extending its finger to crush our hero. The protagonist sets himself for the attack by stomping his feet, before two more arms suddenly appear from his torso.

While we found the trailer for Asura's Wrath exciting, there are plenty of mysteries still to be explained. With Capcom saying that the game will make players question if they were even playing a game at all, we can't help but wonder exactly how the gameplay in Asura's Wrath will play out. There were certainly hints of quick time event-like action in the trailer, but we're hoping the game turns out to offer much more than that. Asura's Wrath will be released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with a release date yet to be confirmed.
