Asus ROG Ally Specs Reveal A Powerful New Steam Deck Competitor

The Asus ROG Ally crams an impressive amount of hardware into a sleek shell.

Asus is throwing its hat into the mobile PC gaming ring with the ROG Ally, a new handheld system that the company says is being designed to overdeliver when it comes to hardware. While the initial reveal was light on details about the technology powering the ROG Ally, Asus has revealed more about the device that is being positioned as a Steam Deck rival.

At the heart of the ROG Ally is a six-core AMD Ryzen Z1 chip and RDNA 3 graphics chip, which makes use of AMD's Super Resolution FidelityFX Super Resolution upscaling technologies. For the display, the ROG Ally has a seven-inch Full HD 120Hz screen that is capable of up to 500 Nits of brightness and has a 7ms response time. There's 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM, Dolby Atmos support through the speakers, and the entire package has an overall weight of just 608g. As for storage, the ROG Ally will ship with a 512GB SSD, which can be further expanded with a microSD card.

Asus ROG Ally specs

No Caption Provided
  • 7" 1080p 120Hz 7ms touch display with FreeSync
  • Weight: 608g
  • AMD Ryzen Z1 Series CPU
  • RDNA 3 Graphics
  • 512GB PCI Express 4.0 SSD
  • 16GB RAM
  • MicroSD slot for storage expansion
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • Windows 11 operating system
  • Haptic feedback
  • Fingerprint sensor for unlocking

While the Steam Deck uses its own SteamOS as a default operating system, the ROG Ally will allow users to access games from a wide variety of PC platforms as it runs on Windows 11. Since it runs Windows, you should be able to use all of your PC accessories, including controllers, headphones, mice, and keyboards.

Asus says that the OS has been fine-tuned for the ROG Ally, and you'll be able to install games from Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox Game Pass for PC, Ubisoft Connect, the EA App, and more. The Asus Armory Crate is also included and provides a number of useful functions such as customizable key mapping, control panel overlays, and performance profiles to toggle between.

The handheld gaming system also uses a custom-designed cooling system, which Asus says is whisper-quiet and barely noticeable when you use the ROG Ally speakers. You can also use the ROG Ally as a 4K gaming machine on a TV screen, but this will require the optional purchase of a (pricey) ROG XG Mobile GPU, which is available with Nvidia 40-series card inside of it. That GPU isn't out yet, but you can grab one with an Nvidia 30-series GPU right now.

Other accessories will be available for the ROG Ally as well, including a number of carrying cases and controllers to use with the device when you're on the move, compatibility with the Raikiri Pro controller, and Asus Cetra wireless earphones .

As for the price, Asus hasn't yet confirmed just how much the ROG Ally will retail for, but the company did guarantee that the RRP won't be more than $1,000. That means the ROG Ally will likely be more expensive than the top-tier 512GB Steam Deck ($650) and on par with other specialist handheld gaming PC systems such as the Aya Neo Air.

The Asus ROG Ally launches on May 11 and will come bundled with three months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

The Asus ROG Ally will also be bundled with 3 months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to further emphasise its support for Windows 11.

Now that's great news for Microsoft!

@johnny0779:It's the only Xbox news... they have absolutely nothing to share about so any news is a good news for xb... it's so lame not even a single 1st party game in the entire 2022 and for 2023 it's still to get better... like for the xbone years and years of promesses and years and years of under delivering I'm verry disappointed by Xbox. I let them make me believing that this gen will be the good one and that we will get many games like in the 360 era and they let me down once again. Lately they admit that Microsoft is angry by the state of xbox and that this gen will probably be the latest console from the brand.. they will continue on PC with gamepass and no more console... they let us think that many game will come... bethesda admitted that they haven't started the dev on Elder Scroll 6 yet and that will probably be a 10 years dev game so if they didn't started yet and it will take at least 10 years from now it's mean that this game, and many others, won't be for this gen console at all, so what the heck you think that will happen...

Perfect dark project... dev stuck in limbo

Fable dev... no news at all since the CGI intention on XBSX lunch

Hellblade 2... no news since CGI intention on XBSX lunch

and that goes on and on and on with all game shown with one exception... the disastrous Halo half backed game with less and less contents with broken promesses and dead online's community already.

XB need to sell game on their hardware to make benefits and with gamepass no one, NO ONE is buying anything, we all wait that came to gamepass...

they need to sell a lot a membership to make their 1st party games to be profitables but they came on day one on gamepass who the hell will buy those?

Now the 3rd party game problems now... what is true for the 1st party is critical for 3rd party one. CAPCOM, KONAMI, SEGA and all others need to sell games to be able to funds their investments on dev those games and today developing game is really expensive, we talking about many millions dollars for 3rd party and multi, mega million for AAA games like Final Fantasy likes and others. Do you really think that those compagnies are really happy to get their game on gamepass... they will not even get back their money to pay devs... it take a lots of downloads and a lots of time to recoup the cost of their dev with this kind of platforms so now think about a AAA games and why 3rd party will take risk to play the XBOX system style of marketing? So that is the main reason why you do not see many 3rd party dev shipping games for Xbox cause it's to risky and they are there to make profits not to please gamers with games but to make profits.... why you think we see a lot of remakes and remasters instead of new IPs? cause a lots of the developments is already done they just need to update here and there controls, sounds and visuals and they know that they will sell tons of those cause they already had made the proof years before so their is really less risks to that kind of games... it's basically easy money for the less risks...

ever wonder why capcom do every remakes of every Resident Evil games while making a genuine new game with new concept and higher risks every 6 years or so? Why we do not get a new Dragon Dogma games in 15 maybe 20 years, cause the risk is really higher to make those kinds of new stuff over playing the security with many, more than we needs, Monsters Hunters and Likes... Security over risks, secure profits overs risks investments.

Now why we hear, here and there, that Konami, a 3rd party dev, is remaking Metal Solid 3 over making a new one or remaking Silent Hills 2 over making a decent developed new entry in the series? That goes on and on...

The Hideo Kojima studio's himself is playing safely by announcing Death Stranding 2 over anything else. We know he is currently playing with new things and ideas but he play safe by announcing a sequel to a decent game that Sony's help funding dev cost...

You see everyone is playing safe.. there is less and less risks taken cause we are talking million in investments that need to be profitable and with Gamepass (That is a cool thing for gamers cause we have access to supposedly futurs AAA and AA and many others games at day one, who is not happy with this kind of model) Xbox just shoot themself in the foot cause no copy of games are sold and no profits are made from this kind of model for development compagnies and with higher risks of lunching games today compare to the early 2000. That Gamepass model could only succeed if there are a really big amount of subscribers of the higher tiers and by selling a lots, but a mean a LOTS, of Xbox hardwares to recoup cost of development.

What I think they will do is that they will keep the xbox brand and absorb it into Microsoft itself to make GamePass a subscription services for gaming on windows platforms, whatever that mean(Windows integrated devices or Tv integrated with GamePass), and that they will stop making consoles cause the needs will not be there to access in multiple ways the next step of logical way to GamePass model.

This is wildly successful for Steam also, regardless of whether it is a steam deck or not. The more of these devices enter the market, the more games will be adapted to steam deck like devices. Steam, GoG, GMG, and tons of other DDPs will of course get their magic %30. Developers and publishers will always try to ensure their games will work on these mobile devices. A good thing as it will expand the gaming industry, and of course more games.

I think that 10th gen console, will have more then a few creating a steam deck like device.

Deck sold well because it has a good chunk of power for the price. This thing not so much. Might as well just buy a gaming laptop on sale at "no more than 1000"

I'd rather wait for Steamdeck 2. Nothing beats Steamdeck console experience.

@andyng211: agreed. Half of what makes the steam deck so good is the OS

I'd rather get this then a steam deck anyday of the week , even if this premium costs an extra 200-300 usd/eu.

Windows specced + 1080p + way better performance , a no brainer.

This thing is going to compete with a steam deck in the same way that a PC competes with a console...

...So it won't. Price and simplicity are key. Steam OS and the low introductory price drive the SD more than its specs.

I already have the 512GB deck but if this thing is actually decent and runs games well / noticeably better than steam deck, I'll prob grab one too. Specially since it has windows on it which unlocks the potential for a bunch of stuff I can't do on the deck.

I think all these companies are going to find out the Deck sold because it's Valve and it cost £350 or whatever it is. I got mine during that sale for £300 and have yet to bother to open it, at £300 it's throw away money, but doubling it..... then you have to think twice. Usually if you have to think about it, you will not buy it. I'm probably just going to keep mine to give as a present or something at some point, I have no use for it.

If its more expensive than Deck then it is no competition, price is what it mtters in Deck, having mini PC for that price.
