Atari full-year revenue tanks

[UPDATE] Publishing revenues for fiscal year '06 down almost $200 million; full-year loss nears $70 million.

Neither the swashbuckling street sense of a Mark Ecko nor the charismatic powers of Neo could keep Atari Inc. from becoming unhinged this past year.

And unhinged it came. Atari today reported that over the past year ending March 31, 2006, it lost $67.1 million. Total revenues for the year were $218.7 million. Both figures are dramatically worse than what the company reported the previous year--then, Atari posted $407.8 in revenues and walked away with a profit on the year of $5.7 million.

"Fiscal 2006 was a challenging year for the industry," company CEO Bruno Bonnell said in a statement. "A shortage of new hardware coupled with a softness in consumer demand for current generation games dramatically impacted results. In addition, titles such as The Matrix: Path of Neo and Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure performed below our expectations."

For the January-March quarter ending March 31, revenue was $54.7 million, compared to $64.4 million in the prior year's fourth quarter. Net loss for the quarter was $4.3 million versus a loss of $9.1 million a year ago.

[CORRECTION: GameSpot incorrectly reported earlier that the company was planning reductions to staff during the present calendar year. According to an Atari rep, the staff cuts referred to in the call were those already taken, primarily those implemented in mid-February, 2006, when some 20 percent of the staff was reduced. "Atari is expecting to benefit from these costs savings in fiscal year '07," according to the rep.]

On the Nasdaq today, shares in Atari closed down just over a penny to $.60.

This news is bad to hear. I personally LOVE Atari. And I'm pretty sure that they will rebound from this. Not everything can be pleasent. I feel sorry for any of the people who were cut off from the company / any game developer employee who is forced out due to losses.... Mark Ecko's game was well.... horrible. So I can see partly why Atari had a tough time. I'm surprised that The Path of Neo failed too. But things go up and down and soon enough another DBZ game (Super DBZ and BT 2) along with other Atari games should help. Go Atari!

"I am sorry Lelio316. I did not know the name of the other dumb a$$es that they sold to. I knew they sold it to someone and I read in a mag in the late '80's that Nolan Bushnell remained as the figure head after the sell for sometime. So I guess that means Time Warner made them a shining example in the game industry right? HELL NO!" Yes, a very warm apology, it made me weep, it really did. I'm done with you dude. Everything you do is something you're giving me hell for, when all I did was correct you. " Did I not say he started Atari's company culture? A company Pioneer will always be given credit on the momentum, strength and direction of a company in some shape or form. It does not make a difference if they continue with them or not. " Yeah, I make assumptions. Go ahead and make yourself feel better with another rant with lots of CAPS and remember to say that you're not yelling at anyone.

Once again Lelio316 you are not reading only assuming. Where did I say I made references to my first comment? I made all of my last set of comments on what you wrote from your first and second comment. Did I not say he started Atari's company culture? A company Pioneer will always be given credit on the momentum, strength and direction of a company in some shape or form. It does not make a difference if they continue with them or not. For example Shigeru Miyamoto will always be given credit as the greatest Nintendo programmer of years to come. Even after he leaves Nintendo someone somewhere will believe that nintendo's failure to re-capture the market will be his fault. Some may say he should not have left, others may say he promoted the kid friendly atmosphere that they are currently unable to shake. Nolan's bad decision making sent the company on a downward spiral that led to the crash. Just because he sold the company does not men that all his employees left too. What he started Warner com. did very little to change. Nolan does not to be there in order to have a lasting impact. "My goodness but you need a pill man." "Please provide ANY information that you can that indicates Bushnell created a "Let's not concentrate on quality" culture....Got any? Didn't think so." "Do you think that temper makes you look cool? " Sounds like an attitude to me. In my first post to you I apologized. I made no belittling comments to you. Yet, you feel the need to take shots at me to appear like you know what you are talking about. Why do you feel the need to do this? I have fun when I write sarcasticly. If you you have a problem with that then stop reading and commenting on my comments. "Wow, you blame others when you aren't clear, and are on a tangent, very mature." I don't blame other others only you. This was started by you. I went into a tangent based on what you said! YOU made all of these silly claims of what I said. Not me. I also pointed out you were only half right with no belittling attitude. I am also very clear. YOU seem to have a problem interpreting my information. So maybe this will be clear: I DID NOT SAY YOU MADE ANY GAME CLAIMS IN YOU 1ST COMMENT. I APOLOGIZED FOR NOT KNOWING WARNER COMMUNICATIONS (not Time warner) BOUGHT THE COMPANY. AND LATTER CORRECTED OYU HALF FACT. ONCE AGAIN, NONE OF MY SARCASMS WERE DIRECTED AT YOU. SAYING CRAP LIKE "My goodness but you need a pill man." AND "Do you think that temper makes you look cool?" WILL ONLY GET THINGS STARTED, ESPECIALLY WHEN I SAID NOTHING TO YOU OF THE SORT. I ALSO ANSWERED YOUR "Please provide ANY information that you can that indicates Bushnell created a "Let's not concentrate on quality" culture....Got any? Didn't think so." THROUGH A BREAKDOWN OF ATARI AND NOLAN BUSHELL. So, you got anymore cheapshots to make you look " very mature"? Otherwise, lets talk games.

Wow, you blame others when you aren't clear, and are on a tangent, very mature. I didn't start a problem. I corrected your entry with no attitude, or judging, or complaining. "Nolan Bushnell and his co-idiots single handedly caused the videogame crash of '84. " Your own timeline shows that that was not true. You attributed something to the man that he was not a part of. From there you extrapolated all of Atari's bad moves, which have nothing to do with your original post. The comment was about Busjnell, not Atari. i didn't defend any of Atari's moves, every one of them was stupid. Trudging them out doesn't mean Bushnell was part of the crash.

Look Lelio316, you must really have some kind of problem. My gripe is not against you but ,it seems you want to pic a fight. I DID NOT SAY YOU MENTIONED ANY GAMES AT ALL. I SAID " PLEASE DON'T TELL ME " . I was being sarcastic. I APOLOGIZED TO YOU BECAUSE I DID NOT KNOW THE NAME OF THE OTHER COMPANY. I AM ALSO SORRY YOU ASSUMED ALL COMMENTS WERE DIRECTED TO YOU AND THEY WERE NOT! THEY WERE GENERAL! MY COMMENT TO YOU ENDED AFTER THE APOLOGY. MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE SAID SO. Please provide ANY information that you can that indicates Bushnell created a "Let's not concentrate on quality" culture....Got any? Didn't think so. Did you not read that I mentioned E.T. ? Have you played it? Have you played dodge'em and atari football? You are probably too young to remember this stuff. E.T. has been rated by many magazines as the worst game of all time. And had you seen some of the documentries on G4techtv like, icons you would know Horward Scott Warsharw said he was pressured to make this game in a short amount of time (six weeks) to catch all the movie hoopla. Strike one. Atari ( if you read there website) at one time created "innovative" controllers that people complained broke easily and were difficulty to handle for long periods of time. Mine broke 2 days after I got it. Strike 2. This controller failure was due in part to Atari's habit of largely ignoring product information from test groups. Strike 3. Sounds to me like they don't understand quality. And there is more on top of that. Oh, I checked up on your time warner claim. Warner communications bought Atari in the seventies. It did not merge with Time inc. until 2 years after their merger announcement in '87. So you were only half right. And now Bushnell. Even after the sell he remained with the company until being forced out ,due to company directional differences, in November 1978. He returned to ATARI in 1988 as a marketing attempt to increase sales. He certainly did not help the Atari XE's battle against the NES. Nolan also started over 20 companies in his lifetime. Corporations value ( and keep) CEO's that make their companies top stock purchases. A guy that moves around that much has little value. A jack of all trades ,a master of none is what they say. All of my extreme sarcasm and down-rating does not come from your silly idea of " thinking that your temper makes you look cool". I love the USA and I am bothered that we started the videogame industry but probably won't finish it on top due to the "quantity over quality" attitude we held in the '80's. Its changing, but slowly. I do not like commenting on other comments. So next time you feel the need to start a problem or take offense at someone elses comments, read all of it and ask questions first. Find out why think the way they do and you may find out that you completely misunderstand them.

He'd been running "Chumpy Cheese" and only relenquished his daily duties in 1983 (at CC) to move on to his next vnture, which was NOT Atari. He'd been gone for a long time. Do you think that temper makes you look cool?

HAHAHAHA! Let me continue the chorus started by a lot of commenters: ATARI SUCKS !!!!!! Now to set the record straight once again, for all of you that keep stating Atari is not the same company that it was when Nolan Bushnell owned it : IT DOES NOT MATTER! Atari is synonymous with crap games point blank ,period, end of story. infrogrames deserves the stupid a$$ award for even attempting to make the Atari name mean something. Nolan Bushnell and his co-idiots single handedly caused the videogame crash of '84. Then they sold the company to some other dumb a$$es and I am suppose to think of old atari as better or different? Yeah right. They are all nothing but a bunch of freakin' morons tried to peddle crap off as "quality" games.

Quote K1llswitch: Even if Atari agreed to put their old games on Xbox Live Arcade, it still wouldn't save them due to the fact that not many people want to play those old games again. Gamers are looking for something new, something fresh. That is why they put their old games on emulation, where you purchase a disc with 300 plus games on it, for cheap. Seriously though, who is going to spend $2- $5 for Pac-Man or Joust. Not many. Did you not read the posts before you!!!! Clearly you didnt or you would realize that the atari that is doing bad is not the orginal atari with all those old games. Not to mention the fact that namco owns pac-man NOT ATARI and midway owns the gaunlet legend series and joust NOT ATARI. And your a fool if you think that people dont like old school games. Collections like Namco museum and midway arcade treasures sell a great deal. I work at a game store and you dont understand how much games like that sell. And xbox live arcade has been doing well particulary with certain games. And I can't wait personally for the revolution...yes i still call it that cause that other name is terrible. But I can't wait to play the old school games super nintendo has easily been my favorite game console and still to this day I say it is the best one ever made. With playstation 1 coming in close second because of all the amazing rpgs and different style games that came on it. Each of these systems had amazing game libaries that i feel have never been achieved yet by the newer consoles. So yes I can't wait to play the old school nintendo games just like many many others can't wait as well. Look at Super Mario on the DS. Not excactly fresh its very much taking from the old mario games. But it is selling like crazy cause its just a great FUN game. The DS is easily the console that has been coming out with some great games that are just fun and inovative.

For years now, Atari hasn't released anything that is worth buying. The only major title that they have is the Gaunlet series, which suck. At least this time if they do go down in the history books again, they won't take the industry with them this time around. Even if Atari agreed to put their old games on Xbox Live Arcade, it still wouldn't save them due to the fact that not many people want to play those old games again. Gamers are looking for something new, something fresh. That is why they put their old games on emulation, where you purchase a disc with 300 plus games on it, for cheap. Really bad news for Atari... they have been producing some interesting games lately and I thought that the Dragon Ball games could help the company. I hope that the new layout for the company woks out. It would be a shame to lose a company like Atari.

I don't know why companies keep trying to buy the name "Atari." Infogames is like the 4th owner since the original group started. Maybe 5th. The name has absolutely no value anymore. Then again, it's not like a whole lot of good software has been made under the Atari banner in the last decade...

Note: this is not the original Atari. The old school Atari company and all of its original members and developers completely dispersed many years ago. Current "Atari" is the French company Infogrames, re-named. They literally purchased the Atari brand and rights to several of its properties and re-named itself in an effort to connect with a larger audience. So all the predictable forthcoming lamentations for old school Atari are about a decade too late.

NWN2 will only succeed if they launch the DM client shortly after the game is released. There are a lot of NWN community members eager to get this game, but if it launches with bugs and if the toolset doesn't live up to the hype, then Atari will feel the wrath of that gaming community.
