Avengers Director Joss Whedon to Make a "Clean Break" from the Marvel Universe

Whedon done with Marvel.

Of all the directors involved with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Joss Whedon is by far the most successful. The Avengers and its sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron are the most successful films in the universe to date, and his role overseeing the other movies in its Phase Two have helped create a hugely popular series of superhero movies. However, Whedon has now confirmed that he will not be involved with any further Marvel films.

During an Q&A at the Oxford University Union, Whedon was asked about whether he would continue to play a creative role in the development of the MCU. "I sort of had my finger in all of the films in the second phase, but then I just had to concentrate only on Ultron, and sort of knew when it was done I was just going to stop," he said, via Uproxx. "So I made a completely clean break, not because we had a falling out, just because I was like, 'I can't.'

"If I was still there going, 'Well, here are my thoughts on this film,' I'd be there every day. I wouldn't do anything else because there are a lot of films, and it is a lot of fun. It's very seductive. When you can put your little fairy dust on things and just improve them slightly, and they actually listen to you."

Whedon has previously spoken about the difficulties he experienced while making Age of Ultron, and the creative battles he had with Marvel executives over certain sequences in the film. "The dreams, the farmhouse, these were not the things [the executives liked]," he told the Empire podcast last year. "These are things I fought to keep.

"With the cave, they pointed a gun at the farm's head and said, 'Give us the cave or we'll take out the farm'. You know, in a civilized way. And I respect these guys, they're artists, but that's when it got really, really unpleasant. I was so beaten down at that point I was like, 'Sure, okay. What movie is this?'"

Nevertheless, last year's Avengers: Age of Ultron went on to make $459 million at the worldwide box office. The first Avengers made $623 million in 2012, and currently stands as the fourth most successful film of all time.

If someone like Joss Whedon can be effectively forced out of the Marvel universe, I have grave concerns about the franchise moving forward.

@thecman25: LOL to go where? Flailing back to FOX to make some half-assed Buffy or Firefly spinoff? The guy sure as hell isn't some kind of major Hollywood director. A lot of people had never even heard of him before the Avengers movies.

Dunno, I saw the deleted scene of the cave, and it was kind of meh, but prolly only because it was half done with the special effects and etc.

FYI..

"Nevertheless, last year's Avengers: Age of Ultron went on to make $459 million at the worldwide box office. The first Avengers made $623 million in 2012, and currently stands as the fourth most successful film of all time."

Correct totals...

Avengers Worldwide total: $1,519,557,910*

Avengers Age of Ultron Worldwide total: $1,405,035,767*

Or just change the word worldwide in the article to domestic.

I think the guy is a genius and it's a shame Marvel are losing him, especially with everything that's coming, but I don't blame him if he really had to put up with that crap from the Marvel brass. The farm segment in Age of Ultron was (for me) a welcome change of pace and scenery, same with Cassie's birthday party in Ant-Man. It provided an opportunity for the best character development of the entire movie.

Meh, I have mixed feelings on the issue.

On the one hand, Marvel seems to want Yes Men to direct their flicks. Most famous directors have bailed (Favreau, Brannagh, Whedon, Wright, to name a few). It seems Marvel's way of doing business is by thanking the people making the magic, with a kick in the *ss towards the front door.

On the other hand, Kevin Feige seems to have an eye for the big picture, and (financially, at least) has been largely successful with these movies. However, these stories are starting to fall flat, and they're having trouble getting A-list directors.

That said, they are waaaaaaay overdue with this whole Infinity Gauntlet payoff. Wrap it up, Marvel!

Whedon announced just after Age of Ultron came out that he was leaving the MCU. Not sure why this is breaking news now.

The quality of Marvel's films are a very mixed bag these days, with each one even more closely becoming a 2-hour trailer for the next film. Age of Ultron is up there (or down there, if you will) with Iron Man 2 being one of the worst of the lot. Whedon clearly was disappointed with the outcome of the film, previously talking about the compromises he had to make and then suddenly cutting all ties to criticism on social media.

I'm hoping that Civil War ends up being one of the better ones... but I can't wait to see what big thing they intend to crash into the ground below in this film, since Avengers, Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy and Age of Ultron used the SAME EXACT plot device. It's like they weren't even trying for the later three films. Perhaps in the next Avengers film, Thanos will try and crash the moon into the earth and Iron Man will propel it with more "laser elements" from Iron Man 2. <_<

@spooie: Winter Soldier didnt use that plot device. The Hellicarriers were used to target people with abilities. They never threatened to crash something into the ground. But yes the movies all feature a scene with something falling and the race to stop it. Plus Winter Soldier was DAMN good. The Hellicarriers were really just a set piece.....NOT the main plot of the movie.

I'm ok with this. He clearly didn't want to be part of a shared universe where he didnt have full control over the characters and stories. Avengers;AOU suffered because of this. His ego is too big

@straightcur: These large studio films are not easy to manage. Marvel hired him because he's good at juggling multiple characters on his shows. Which proved effective for Avengers, a film most can agree he hit out of the park. Age of Ultron had too many cooks in the kitchen which is strange considering marvel seems to give their director's a wide birth with most projects. Age of Ultron is an unusual case where they insisted on certain elements being introduced even though the film was going to suffer for it. Whedon fights for real moments, character moments. The studio wanted frivolous world building that proved unnecessary. How is Whedon the bad guy in all this? He still produced an excellent sequel, flaws and all.

@virtuasega: No dumber than the Banner/Romanov romance. That shit was so boring and unnecessary. Not to mention very forced. They could have cut that WHOLE romance and included the explanation instead.
