Avengers Directors Say Sony Made A "Tragic Mistake" With Spider-Man MCU Split

"I think it's a tragic mistake on Sony's part..."

Spider-Man is apparently officially out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now the directors of the latest Avengers movies have spoken about the decision. Speaking to the Toronto Sun, directors Anthony and Joe Russo commented on one of the biggest off-screen superhero movie storylines of 2019.

Anthony Russo commented that the "marriage" between Sony--which holds the movie rights to Spider-Man--and Disney was not built to last.

Now Playing: Sony Confirms That Spider-Man Is Out Of The MCU

"We had a wonderful experience with that and I think audiences really appreciated that marriage. But we know how hard that marriage was to make in the first place, so the fact that the marriage fell apart isn't really that surprising to me and Joe," he said.

Anthony Russo added that is was an "extremely long and hard process" to get Spider-Man into the MCU in Captain America: Civil War, which was his first appearance. Spider-Man would go on to appear in the MCU movies Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Endgame, as well as his own movies Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Joe Russo, meanwhile, said the relationship between Disney and Sony was "a tenuous, fraught union throughout the whole process." Marvel boss Kevin Feige was at the heart of the Spider-Man deal, and he was also working with Sony as a producer on their Spider-Man movies. That won't happen in the future, however, and Joe Russo thinks it is a "tragic mistake" on Sony's part.

"But, I will say, stepping back and trying to be objective as possible, that I think it's a tragic mistake on Sony's part to think that they can replicate Kevin's penchant for telling incredible stories and the amazing success he has had over the years. I think it's a big mistake," he said.

Feige previously talked about the break-up between Marvel and Sony, saying, "We got to make five films within the MCU with Spider-Man: two standalone films and three with the Avengers. It was a dream that I never thought would happen. It was never meant to last forever. We knew there was a finite amount of time that we’d be able to do this, and we told the story we wanted to tell, and I'll always be thankful for that."

Even with Spider-Man no longer in the MCU, Disney will continue to benefit from Spider-Man as it currently receives 100% of merchandise sales from Spider-Man.

In other news, just this weekend, Feige revealed a never-before-seen Iron Man deleted scene that references Spider-Man and X-Men, suggesting Marvel wanted them in the MCU from the beginning.

People focus on Disney so they can be like "ooh evil Mouse empire wanting to control all the things!" while ignoring the biggest moral factor in this: MARVEL. Marvel created Spider-Man, they own everything about the character they created except for the movie rights which Sony bought for next to nothing from a Marvel company which was bankrupt at the time and selling everything that wasn't nailed down just to keep the lights on. They don't deserve to keep those rights, they didn't create the IP. It belongs with Marvel, period.

I love how every person associated with Disney/Marvel acts like this was 100% Sony's doing. Clowns all around.

Jesus how does a douche bag company like Disney get to deflect pretty much all negative criticism. Sony refused to give Disney 50 percent of a character they owned. Its cute people keep acting like Disney did Sony a big favor but

a. Marvel did get helped by being able to use Spiderman in 3 movies, would those movies still make a lot of money. Yes. But its undeniable that Spiderman is one of the A listers of Marvel, Id put ahead of every one except maybe Iron Man. So its not like Disney got no other benefit. So for them to then go and say we want 50 percent of the cut of future films on top of that. pfft

People forget, Sony is almost does films as a hobby, its not one of their major money makers, and they are still a top ten top 20 company in the world. So honestly, the extra 400 million spiderman made over say venom, doesn't really amount to much to them.

b. Sony has nothing to worry about Disney in terms of gaming; they just sold their only gaming studio, and they have never been known for hardware despite how prolific they are in media. At the end of the day , I wouldnt even consider them competitors. Disney is pretty much solely a media company, while Sony is more akin to Microsoft a hardware developing conglomerate.

c. And lastly, it seems memory lose is in high demand here, as people keep acting like there was never a good super hero movie prior to Disney, the first 2 spiderman films rami did were pretty great, imo better than the two marvel ones, and the first two xmen movies and blade films were just as good as anything Disney has done.

Who needs who, well Disney definitely doesn't need Sony for sure. MCU finally made the movie version of Spider-man look cool. Sony has better keep doing animated features with the character to make the movies interesting because the live action films have been hokey, syrupy crap.

What do people expect them to say? They surely can't say Disney did a mistake.

Unpopular opinion but please stop making superhero movies. They are terrible nonsense. It was fun for sometime but it's the same shit in each and every movie.

What did you expect? Of course they're going to say that. They're not going to ruin that gravy train connection they have with Disney.

Same thing when developers are asked about the quality of their games. They're not going to crap where they eat.

Is that actually what happened? I thought Sony made it sound like Disney wouldn't let Feige work on it because they wanted him to work on their own properties, and Sony pulled out because it wasn't worth it without him.

I could be wrong but no comments here even mentioned SPIDER-MAN into the SPIDER-VERSE.

Here are some quotes taken directly from Wikipedia.

This film was produced by Sony Pictures Animation in association with Marvel, distributed by Sony Pictures, required up to 140 Sony Pictures animators, the largest animation crew that Sony Pictures had ever used for a film, is set in an alternate universe from those films without the version of Spider-Man as seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, had a production budget of $90 million, generated worldwide gross sales of $375.5 million, was released on digital download by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, surpassed Hotel Transylvania 2 to become Sony Pictures Animation's highest grossing film domestically, has a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 97%, based on 368 reviews, praised as "one of the coolest films [he has] ever seen" by Tom Holland, was called an "emotionally moving, cutting edge, progressive, diverse, funny, meta, action-packed, silly, visually stunning masterpiece!" by Chris Pratt, won Best Animated Feature Film at the 76th Golden Globe Awards & 24th Critics' Choice Awards, won the Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards, and was the first non-Disney or Pixar film to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature since Rango (2011).

@noobsaibotx: So what? That’s an animated film, and something that is incredibly different than love action films. I don’t doubt that The spider verse films will be great going forward, but that doesn’t mean squat about the live action adaptations that will follow.

@dashaka: so what?! Everything you said doesn’t matter bc it didn’t follow outline bullets A, B, and C from the list of live action movies only that specifically relate to Spider-Man so what we don’t care what you say even if it’s true so, so what you waste your time, boomshakalaka so what whatever man

Who knew? Sega gave the finger to Nintendo and Sony when it came to a merger, only to re-sign permanently in console manufacturing allowing Xbox original to rise building in the foundation so yes xbox is sega in spirit where it could have been.

Now Sony is playing Sega's old game.

I can sense a Disney console in the works.

There was one but it's not what I call profitable.

I'll bet Sony doesn't think it's a tragic mistake.

Disney will probably have to buy the rights back. They can afford it.

@Barighm: I don't think Sony would sell unless it's a crazy amount like 100 billion which Disney wouldn't front anyway. They know rightly that Disney could easily recoup the money if they sold it for 5 billion or 10 billion.

Sony did most of the work they deserve most of the cut. you people need to stop defending and bending over backwards for Disney.

Spider-mans movie rights belong to Sony NOT Disney they decide what cut they give simple.

there literally is no scenario where you could defend Disney, if you can please I need a good laugh. please tell me why you want to pull your pants down and bend over backwards for your LORD DISNEY. do you enjoy it, does it feel good?

@alastor529: Calm down with the antagonism, man.

The way I understood it, Disney was making the MCU Spider-man movies and Sony was paying for them and getting most of the return. Disney wanted to split the cost and the take 50/50 and Sony said no.

I really don't care which gigantic company is at fault here, I'm just bummed out the MCU Spider-man is done right after they set him up to be a big part of the upcoming Avengers arch. I liked the last two Spider-man movies a lot, and Sony's track record with Spider-man films is pretty bad. It's a shame. : \

@alastor529: I'll provide the best defense there is: the Disney movies were at least decent to good and Disney proved they could make the brand more profitable than Sony ever could. Spider-Man fans want good movies. So don't be surprised when fans stand on Disney's side.

@alastor529: That analogy doesn't really work, because the premise you're replying to is that, with Disney's help, Sony can make more money off Spider-man than they can on their own, because Disney made good Spider-man movies and Sony didn't.

@alastor529: Completely agree.

Marvel demanded a better deal, sony said "We're happy with things as they are" and Disney just threw their hands up and said "WELL I GUESS NEGOCIATIONS ARE DONE" and then turned to social media to make themselves to be the victims in all this so people would...I dunno what.

Bully Sony into giving Spider Man back after they legally paid for the movie rights?

@Dragon_Nexus: That's kinda what happened with the Fox-Disney feud for a long time. Eventually, Disney finally just grew up and gave a check to Fox and said "Write the amount that you think your entertainment network is worth and we'll pay it." * That's probably what will eventually happen here as well.

*Yes, I know it was more complicated than that but that was the eventual end result.

Whether it was a good idea or bad why wouldn't someone on the Disney side say it was a mistake? It would only be newsworthy if one of the Sony Pictures figureheads said the decision was a terrible blunder or if one of the major MCU developers claimed Sony made the right call.

I think Sony can make a good Spider-man movie. THe Disney pitch was to make Spider-man a very important character just as Iron-man was. Without Iron man and Captain America, and now no spider-man, I wonder who is going to be the glue for the MCU.

@Dragon_Nexus: The first two Sam Raimi movies were good for the early 2000s, sure. The next THREE Spider-man movies from Sony really kinda sucked.

Maybe Sony can match the MCU Spider-man movies, but the last three they made were bad and the last two Disney made were really good, so it seems like Sony is giving up almost guaranteed money for the chance of maybe making more money IF they can finally do the thing they've failed at for a decade and a half.

@Barighm: Lol. That's funny how you define hardcore when the Raimi movies captured the heart and soul of the character(s) and comic the best. Real Uncle Ben arc. No Iron Man substitute Daddy figure. Real sentiment and no forced Hollywood Blockbuster "comedy.” Please. Speak for yourself.

These types of stooges never fail to make me sigh and shake my head. But as bad as they are, at least they are actually working for those they are shilling for. It's the masses of brain-dead sheep who enable, defend and act as apologists that are the real issue.

Plus, the way I look at it.. The further away Disney and the current Marvel are from something, the better!

Wont it be better for everyone involved if Sony makes the 50/50 deal with Marvel, make more movies with the MCU Spiderman and then create their own Spiderman set in a different universe? preferably with Venom? They can just take another shot or as many as they like to make a new Spiderman.. they can even try other Spidermen like Miles Morales or Miguel O'hara. I guess it will be kind of hard for them but then again if they cant do a good Spiderman without Marvel then they just lose that MCU money and lose some for bad Spiderman movies. That said, it will be kind of hard to make a bad Spiderman movie.. as a fan i kind of loved all of them. Including Spiderman 3 and The Amazing Spiderman 2
