Avengers: Infinity War Directors Put Blame For Soul-Crushing Ending On Thor

Et tu, Thor?

In the end, the dire consequences of Avengers: Infinity War came down to the choice made by a single character--and it wasn't Thanos (Josh Brolin). Instead, it was one of the titular Avengers that set in motion the film's emotional climax and now the movie's directors are shedding some light on that decision. If you somehow haven't seen Avengers: Infinity War, this is your obligatory spoiler warning. Stop now or suffer the consequences.

During the battle of Wakanda, there was one man that could have stopped Thanos from snapping his fingers and wiping out half of existence: Thor (Chris Hemsworth). With a throw of his Stormbreaker axe, the son of Odin could have lopped off the purple monster's dead, ending the threat once and for all. Instead, he threw the axe right into the chest of Thanos, at which point the villain chides him for not taking the kill shot.

Now Playing: Avengers 4: What Happens After Infinity War?

As co-director Joe Russo tells ComicBook.com, that was a deliberate choice and one that viewers can hold against Thor--especially those who blame Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) for what happened after he punched Thanos while the Infinity Gauntlet was being removed. "I would argue that the fan base could be equally upset with Thor, who chose to throw that axe into Thanos' chest and not his head," he says. "Because he wanted to tell Thanos that he got his revenge."

It's a cocky move by Thor and one driven by rage after the deaths of both Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Heimdall (Idris Elba). However, it's that movie, Russo says, that allows Thanos to carry out his plan. "Had he gone for a kill shot, that snap would not have happened," he explains. "These are choices that characters who are feeling immense pain make and hopefully, the audience can learn to empathize with those characters because they can grow through stories."

Given the Infinity Stones--including the time stone--are still in play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there's always the chance that time could be reversed in Avengers 4, allowing Thor to revisit his actions and choose a different path. He cannot be blamed for the mad titan's plot to gather the stones and decimate the galaxy's population, but he does shoulder his own responsibility in how these events unfolded.

Avengers 4 is in theaters on May 3, 2019. Before then, Ant-Man and the Wasp will premiere on July 6, 2018, with Captain Marvel following on March 8, 2019.

@limbofrog: We can blame others for various reasons for not stopping him, but Thanos is the one that did the deed.

There are several typos in this article. Dead should be head and movie should be move given the context of what is said in the article.

I think Thor is more to blame for not answering Cap's call to save Vision. EVERYONE else rallied to defend Vision when Thanos showed up, including Rocket and Groot, but Thor wasn't there when it really mattered. He was apparently too busy destroying the drop-ships that the space dogs were trying to ESCAPE on. It makes even less sense because Thor shouted "Bring me Thanos!" after his timely entrance onto the Wakandan battlefield.

Thor could've stopped Thanos before Scarlet Witch was forced to destroy the Mind Stone, and before Thanos reversed time to take it and kill Vision. When Thor showed up, it was too late. IMO Thor's more to blame for that than trying for a headshot.

@chaz: Blaming Star-Lord is ridiculous.

I know that the fate of the entire universe was on the line, but in Civil War, Tony Stark couldn't let the deaths of his parents go despite that: a) it happened over 20 years earlier; b) he knew Zimo was manipulating him; and c) that Bucky was mind-controlled by Hydra and not responsible for his actions. Despite all that, there were plenty of fans on Team Iron Man in Civil War. Stark was the real villain of that movie.

Star-Lord not being able to control his rage upon learning that Thanos murdered his daughter to obtain the Soul Stone was understandable. It wasn't a smart decision; it was an emotional one.

How many Oscar-bait drama or romance films hinge on the protagonist making an irrational, emotional decision that either resulted in a fairy tale ending or soul-crushing tragedy? Fans of those movies get off on that sappy shit. They don't blame the protagonist for his/her humanity. There are countless pretentious haters out there who dismiss the MCU movies because they're about comic book superheroes. But here's an example of the characters showing emotional depth, and haters condemn them for it.

Regardless, it was Tony's terrible decision to take the Time Stone to Titan and try to "fight Thanos on his home turf." He made that call when it was just him, Spider-Man, and Dr. Strange. The three of them couldn't have defeated Thanos. Tony had no way of knowing the Guardians would show up to help. And Mantis was absolutely essential to immobilizing Thanos. If anyone was to blame, it was Tony Stark for his terrible plan -- Star-Lord even said Tony's plan sucked.

@reavern: one could argue that if they had gone back to earth instead of going to Titan then Thanos would have gone back to earth earlier and they wouldn’t have had time to attempt to destroy The Mind Stone in the first place.

@twinstarnumber1: No, because Thanos would've been delayed by the Guardians on Titan. Nebula contacted Mantis and told them where Thanos was heading. The Guardians would've fought Thanos and presumably would've lost -- unless Star-Lord really did have a better plan than Stark and somehow stopped Thanos.

Even if Thanos immediately trounced the Guardians and ported to Earth, he would've arrived in Wakanda AFTER Thor did with his new god-killer ax, Stormbreaker, and Rocket and Groot. Thanos would've faced all of the Avengers, plus the Wakandans, Spider-Man, and Dr. Strange. Thanos was nearly subdued on Titan by Iron Man's team, so the heroes would have had a better chance to defeat Thanos in this scenario.

Considering that Thor struck a mortal blow with Stormbreaker moments after Thanos completed the Infinity Gauntlet, it presumably would've been easier when Thanos only had 4 stones. It would've been easy to remove the Infinity Glove if Thanos was dead.

Regardless, Vision insisted that Scarlet Witch destroy the Mind Stone after he sensed that Thanos was on Earth. That was the breaking point. Scarlet Witch could've destroyed the Mind Stone before Thanos took it. And since Thanos didn't have Strange's Time Stone yet, he couldn't reverse time to save the Mind Stone.

Thanos would've been thwarted, or probably killed by Thor. Worst-case scenario: Dr. Strange flees with the Time Stone and Thanos uses the incomplete Infinity Gauntlet to destroy Earth. Objectively, that's better than wiping out half of all life in the entire universe. Needs of the many and all.

There is about a 100 ways Thanos could have stopped him. That is why i hate that damn infinity guantlet. Its too many ridiculous powers stacked on top of each other. Assuming they have the same capabilities as in the comics, just any one gem is actually enough to wipe them all out if you're creative enough.

If you really want to fault 1 person for Thanos being able to wipe out half of existence it is Star Lord. Had he not lost his cool and let Iron Man, Spider-Man and the others take the Gauntlet off first none of it would have came to pass.

@dragonsama: No, if Star-Lord hadn't shown up with the rest of the Guardians on Titan, it would've just been Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Dr. Strange against Thanos, and they would've gotten close to getting the Infinity Gauntlet off.

Don't forget, it was Tony's plan to take the Time Stone to Titan, knowing that Thanos would be heading there. That was a stupid plan.

Dr. Strange could've opened a portal and taken the three of them back to Earth in 2 seconds -- he didn't need Stark to pilot the ship back. But it was Stark who convinced Strange to go to Titan and "fight Thanos on his own turf" because "he wouldn't be expecting it." That terrible decision led directly to Thanos obtaining the Time Stone. Whereas if they returned to Earth and joined up with the Avengers, they would've had a much better chance against Thanos.

It's commonly believed that giant axes cleaving your torso produce death conditions. The Russos sound like they're just trying pull some heat off of Star Lord.

Have these guys never read the comic books? Thanos has the Power Gem. He cannot be physically defeated. You aren't cutting off his head. That's like blaming Wolverine in the books for burying his claws in Thanos' chest instead of lopping off his head.

It was a stupid line that makes it seem like Thanos is not all-powerful with the Gauntlet. Just cut off his head. That's it. Thanos could have easily just frozen time before Stormbreaker ever reached him and been fine. It is stupid to ever make it appear that he was in any danger. I hope they address it in the next movie. Thor says, "I nearly killed you" and Thanos explains the multitudr of ways he could have stopped the attack and simply chose not to.

This is the worst kind of semi-retcon possible, since it is 'explained' and not shown.

It could have been shown as in: Thor buries the Stormbraker in Thanos' chest and says something cliché like "I could have killed you, but I wanted you to look at me in the eye and know it was me who did it" and Thanos: "mistake, dumbass" snaps fingers.

There, you have a scene were people can start debating if it was StarLord or Thor to blame.

But nooooooo, let's make it sooooo obvious it was Starlord.

Nah people will never blame Thor. His blow was actually mortal, just didn't do the job quick enough, nor was he aware that Thanos was seconds away from wiping out half the universe. Starlord on the other hand, he completely blew the plan. Tony and crew would've actually succeeded if it wasn't for him.

Hey, I've played enough Tabletop RPGs to know you can't always go for the headshot, 'cause too often you'll miss.

Besides, I don't blame Star Lord for punching Thanos in the face, I blame Mantis for blabbing about Thanos' feelings when everyone needed to not be distracted.

But if it wasn't for Tyrion giving Thor the new weapon Thor wouldn't have been there. And Thor wouldn't have met up with Tyrion of the Guardians never let him take a ship. But they wouldn't have found Thor if they responded to the beacon, and the beacon wouldn't have activated if Thanos hadn't took over the Asgard ship. So Thanos did it all himself!
