BAFTA Names The Most Influential Video Games Ever, And Some Choices Are Big Surprises

BAFTA released a list of the most influential games of all time, and it has some very surprising inclusions.

A list of the most influential video games of all time from BAFTA is making waves online due to some controversial picks, including Shenmue and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.

BAFTA, an independent arts charity representing creatives in several different entertainment industries, previously asked the public to vote on what they believed were the most influential games of all time. As can sometimes be the case with lists based on public opinion and votes, the results published on April 3 were funky. Some widely believed to be influential games, like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Dark Souls, and the original Doom, made the list. Some inclusions were head-scratchers, though.

Namely, Shenmue takes the top spot, with BAFTA saying Sega's Dreamcast classic "feels like the original blueprint for the dynamic, detailed settings that have since become the expected norm at gaming’s bleeding edge." It ranking over games like Super Mario. Bros, Minecraft, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is quite the surprise, though.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, a game that launched just over two months ago, also making the list at the seventh slot is a bit confusing. However, it does serve as a reminder that these results are subjective. You can check out BAFTA's full list of the top 21 most influential games of all time below:

  1. Shenmue
  2. DOOM
  3. Super Mario Bros.
  4. Half-Life

Looks like Steam Awards, where everybody just votes for the games they like, whether they fit a category or not. Like, how is Kingdom Come 2 influential? It just came out. What has it influenced?

Yeah, Shenmue at the top has completely undermined the entire list in my opinion. In fact, I'm not even sure it deserves to be on there at all. And a couple of the other choices are clearly just stupid, especially Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. You simply cannot have a game that's only been out for a few months make such a list. The fact the people making the list didn't understand this instantly is very telling really. Many of the games on the list do deserve to be there, for sure, but I just can't take it seriously ultimately.

Not only is this list holding some ridiculous games, but the order is just seemingly random. What they need is a set of reasons by each game to explain why, otherwise there is little logic to this list.

I'd take off these two as it is far too early to say and I don't think they're influencing anyone. Not that aren't good games, but they aren't innovative....

  • Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
  • Baldur's Gate 3

Shenmue coined the term 'Quick Time Event'.

As a game though... meh. It's one of those games that was way too ambitious and bit off more than it could chew. You can see what it was aiming for, but it didn't even come close to hitting the target.

"Shenmue "feels like the original blueprint for the dynamic, detailed settings that have since become the expected norm at gaming’s bleeding edge.""

This feels like the people who voted where Shenmue diehards and dug deep to try and justify their choice. I never would've said Shenmue had that much influence on gaming.

I would say KCD1 over KCD2, and I guess I could see Shenmue being near the top given it was one of the first kind of open world games i think....but I dunno about number 1.

At least they didn't put FF7 Remake on the list instead of the original, lol.

Yea, Shenmue was not as influential as Doom., Or Halflife for that matter. Or Mario.

Baldur's Gate 3 hasn;t even been around long enough, to influence games. It's Baldur's Gate that did that.

Grand Theft Auto III all the way down there?

Good gravy.
