Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition has over 350k words of new content

Developer says over 350,000 words of content have been added to updated version of 2000 original, but game still has no firm release date.

The upcoming Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition has over 350,000 words of new quest and story dialogue spread across the original Shadows of Amn and its expansion Throne of Bhaal.

"We're hard at work on BG2:EE and it is going well," said developer Beamdog's president Trent Oster in an interview with Shacknews. "Phil (our design lead) mentioned to me there is over 350,000 words of new content."

The game has no official release date as of yet. Oster said the extra words would be delivered as part of the standard Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition on PC and Mac, and as DLC for iPad and Android.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition was released in 2012. "Baldur's Gate remains the same enthralling epic that it was in 1998, but bugs and lackluster extras make it tough to call this an enhanced version of the classic," said GameSpot in its 6.0 review of the game.

Baldur's Gate 2 was originally developed by BioWare and released in 2000.

@lathrael @ARKofEREH @CommodoreRaslin @lathrael @ARKofEREH @CommodoreRaslin I would prefer an ending that makes sense in the context. Viconia has said all game that she wants power and Drow, in general, tend to respect and seek power, but when I become a god she suddenly doesn't want the kind of power that would entail? It doesn't make any sense! Also, as an evil alignment character it seems highly unlikely that she would disapprove of the dark nature of the god I would become.

The other option that is currently available makes even less sense! By the time ToB ends, Viconia is a very high level cleric, yet if I choose not to become a god, someone kills her with poison. Poison is something that clerics could easily deal with since BG1. Viconia would certainly have the spell to cure herself after ToB and/or an antidote potion and even if by some perfectly aligned fluke in which someone ambushed her after she had already used all her spells that day and had time to contact her husband but not enough to find an antidote and in these circumstances she did die from poison, it's not like the PC,who the epilogue states became some sort of political figure himself, could not afford to pay the measly few hundred gold to have her resurrected. Essentially, I would prefer a happy ending, but if they don't want to give one, I would accept it as long as the entire premise weren't full of very large and noticeable holes.

Regardless, I think it would be fun if there were a quest that could change the outcome in BG3. I mean, it wouldn't have to change the outcome, but it could depending on what choices individual players made, as is normally the case in quests. That way everyone could follow the path of their choosing. The same could be done for any or all of the other characters' epilogues, many of which would make interesting quests.

I dont like this, same as BG1 Enhanced edition twice the price and they added drm to the game, just buy it from gog for 10 dollars, you can even get a promo and get it for 2 like I did.

The new content doesn't worth the extra money nor the drm system...

Interview with The Producer of Beamdog, Phillip Daigle(truepcgaming)

What type of DRM will be used for Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition?

"On the PC side, Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition will initially be available through Beamdog, or as a stand-alone download. In both cases, the game will have a launcher that performs a check when you first install the game to make sure you own it"

What do you call that?

I am a big Dungeons and Dragons fan, but I just can't play those old games using the old D&D 2.0 rules. I love D&D 3.5 (I also hate 4.0), the point is, I don't think I could return to THACO and lack of customizing skills and no feats... a BG3 with updated rules would be awesome!

A game Ive played and replayed sooooo many times and Istill will purchase this edition. I havent finished BG1: EE yet but Im pretty close to entering Baldurs gate so I guess there isnt much left before finishing the game. Ill try to have it done before this one comes out so I can import my characters. I LOVE BG(but I hate dark alliance).

For the love of RPGs and everything true gaming, I gave these games an honest shot. But it just wasn't for me. Way too complicated, couldn't figure out what the heck I was doing. Right off the rip, it's like, okay wtf are the controls. Why can't I attack this guy? Why can't I use that, what are the stats on this weapon. Just...confusing. Overall a very uncomfortable experience.

Maybe I should give it another chance. Anybody want to convince me?

@Fartman7998 You might enjoy Neverwinter games a little more. They also just came out with an MMO but its further from DandD than the rest I'm sure. All the same universe and lore though.

@genjuroT I've tried both, but to be fair, I don't think I went in with the right attitude. I think I might benefit from a detailed rundown of the controls. The biggest thing that kept me from liking Baldur's Gate was how it didn't tell me any info I wanted. I did play Baldur's Gate on PS2 though, that was a fun game. I might be willing to try both Baldur and Neverwinter again since it's obviously still popular :P

@Fartman7998 @genjuroT Try watching a "Let'splay" of the game on youtube while you play it. That will really help you understand and get into the game. My favorite is this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqmEkUblZUg&list=SP0B2047B09486313C
If you watch that while you play a little, I gurantee you will understand and enjoy this game. I really like watching this guy's videos too. He makes them very entertaining. Let me know if you try it and what you think

@Fartman7998 It was made in the days of complete freedom and no hand holding. Playing the game felt like you were the first one to ever play the game. The sense of discovering something and not knowing what to do with it.

The difference between a game like this and a game like Skyrim is that Skyrim holds your hand more, losing some of its immersion. Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale games will literally throw you to the wolves and see if you can survive.

I remember my wife's first time playing Icewind Dale. She forgot to buy armor and weapons and ran into about 12 goblins. She quit and said it was too hard lol.

I'd rather they spend time making bg3 vs revamping something that is 13 years old.

@carolino @spectreSE7EN Don't get me wrong. I played through BG1 and BG2. I never did get to the expansions. I loved this game and I'm not saying it is a bad thing that they're refreshing it. This is just me speaking as a fan...it has been 13 years since BG2 came out, would love to see them continue the franchise with well thought out sequel and refresh BG2 later.

Jeeze you people. EE wasn't that damn bad. It wasn't a $60 game. It was $20. It was the game in one simple download. No modding or the like.

At any rate I played it on my iPad and won it twice. (I get downtime often where I cannot do anything but wait.)

@Poodlejumper Why spend $20.00 when you can get the same thing for $10.00? Why spend double when you don't have too? It's the principle more then the money.

@williebazerka @Poodlejumper To show support for these games, I would gladly fork over 20 bucks~. Especially since most 60$ games can't even come close to what these have in them. ._.

350.000 Word MIGHT sound like much.....

....but if we're realistic it boils down to 1 or 2 new quests I'd asume

(Do not forget to take rooting dialogue options into account)

@Justforvisit 350,000 words is longer than the wordcount of three of the A Song of Ice and Fire Books. Those are some long novels. I highly doubt that 1 or 2 quests would have as many words as A Clash of Kings.

Baldur's Gate could use a lot of improvements in graphics, AI (watching your party get through a door is just sad), and interface. What doesn't need improving is content. The game is already HUGE!

Ah well, we've got a lot of new isometrics on the horizon all of the sudden. Y'awl do what you want.

I have the EE for BG1 but have not played it.....Do I really need to install the original to enjoy it. Its like 9 cds or something insane in my old box of games @_@ Does the EE change the originals content? I actually never finished the first one and it was years ago when I played it. So I want the best experience...but I am also lazy...

@Raditz5 No. EE was not bad at all. It did not ruin the original at all.

Some of the additions done were kind of lame though. The Arena was a foray into the mindlessness that many RPGs have become but it's not like you have to play it.

@Raditz5 @Zloth2 No no no no, the main hate thrown at BG:EE has been that you can get the original on GOG for a lot cheaper then use a couple of free mods to make the game nice on a modern PC.

If you've got EE then playing it as is should be fine.

People really shouldn't try to improve a classic like Baldur's Gate 2, beyond maybe a graphics update. Adding additional text and even quests will only obscure and compromise what is already the greatest party-based RPG ever released in electronic form.

If you really want to fix something, have a look at some truly broken games that have been released, starting with anything with Obsidian's name on it.

I dont know, I just dont have much faith for them to go beyond mediocre. If theyr going to pull the same arena type DLC expansion for BG2:EE. Then i will just facepalm and move on.

Honestly they are better of doing EE for Drakensang series then BG.
