Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance Gets Re-Release On Consoles And PC In 4K

The early 2000s RPG classic re-emerges on PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox and PC just before the new Dark Alliance drops this summer.

Wizards of the Coast and Interplay are casting a resurrection spell on a 2000s-era classic RPG. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance returns to the fray on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch tomorrow, May 7 with PC and mobile versions arriving later in the year.

Those looking for a robust experience should temper their expectations, as this is being called a "re-release" and not a remaster. The port will be playable on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 via backwards compatibility however, with support for two-player local cooperative play returning from the original release. A minute-long trailer announcing the shadow drop was released, and you can watch it below.

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance originally launched in December 2001 for PlayStation 2 and the original Xbox. The isometric action RPG from now-defunct Snowblind Studios followed three playable heroes--each with their own abilities and strengths--through a hack-and-slash adventure set in the Dungeons and Dragons universe.

The shadow-dropped re-release is well timed, as Dungeons and Dragons: Dark Alliance is set to carry the Dark Alliance torch on June 22. Baldur's Gate 3, another upcoming game in the Baldur's Gate saga, released in early access in October with the full launch date still unannounced.

Hopefully this is because they noticed all the love expressed for these first 2 games when people were responding to the news about the new game. would be great if they took the hint and made a new BG:DA3 more akin to the originals (and are maybe hopefully using the re-release of the first two to fund it)....

Wow. That's quite the surprise. But no attempt to remaster? Lame. The game was considered a Greatest Hits title. And, really, these games would make terrific online co-op games.

*Ah, this is Interplay. That explains it. No mention of that in the article, though. Top tier reporting as usual.

This was a good couch co-op when it came out, but just good. Me and a buddy had a blast playing this game, but single was pretty bad. And was not worth playing through a second time.

I am all for a 4k new paint job slathered over older games, but why not some games like Jade Empire or Lost Odyssey, Skies of Arcadia, RE code veronica, Suikoden 3 and so many more. BG-DA was a pretty good game, but not a masterpiece. And was left with a pretty heavy cliff hanger that went no where. The GC version was pretty deficient to. GS 8.8

Unless BG-DA is one of those games that can easily have added loot boxes, and cheap DLC added.

@jenovaschilld: EA doesn't care about Jade Empire, Mistwalker is too focused on mobile these days, Capcom doesn't seem to care about Code Veronica, Skies of Arcade WAS renewed and being teased some years ago but nothing ever materialized, the Suikoden team was disbanded years ago and Konami DEFINITELY doesn't care...

And, frankly, I enjoyed BGDA more than any of those games you listed (except Skies; never played".

@Barighm: Skies was pretty amazing for its time, not only a good story, great combat, and killer music, but also had a few game mechanics that were interesting. It used the PDA like device that vibrated and sent sounds when you were close to treasure instead of the obligatory chest or barrel out in the open. And the feel of exploring lands with a airship, instead of just crossing a map was a great hook for its day. Minor complaint, tons of enemy encounters.

Really hopes Skies sees another day in the sun, and Jade Empire.

@jenovaschilld: While you're waiting for Jade Empire, give Shiness The Lightning Kingdom a shot...

...okay, I haven't played it yet, so no idea if its good or not, but apparently its kung fu RPG mechanics are very good.

That would be awesome if Dark Alliance, Dark Alliance 2 and Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes were brought back.

Who has the rights to the DA/Norrath games now? I don't suppose we can expect a release of DA2, and maybe even the Norrath games? A little disappointed DA1 and 2 weren't bundled together but I'll be more than happy to play DA1 on my switch in the meantime.

@Kathos: Wizards. I think all D&D related rights reverted back to Wizards a few years ago. That's why they were able to make Baldur's Gate 3, why they're doing that new movie, and why they were able to make the new game. Clearly Interplay is trying to leverage their catalogue to take advantage of the new release.

As for Norrath, it's still with the Everquest people. Apparently they're yet another dev that likes to hoard their old IPs.
