Barbie Is GameSpot's Movie Of The Year 2023

If you would've told us last year that a movie about a toy doll would be the best movie of 2023, we probably wouldn't have believed you.

As we reach the end of 2023, it's hard to argue anything made a bigger pop culture impact than Barbie. What would have been an emotionally empty cash grab about the world's most popular doll turned out to be a reason for moviegoers to celebrate the evolution of said doll franchise from merely a toy to a symbol of strength, individualism, and accepting yourself.

While on the surface, Barbie was a flashy and fun romp, with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling acting cute and goofy around each other while wearing bright clothes, it was about so much more. After spending their entire existence thinking their simple and idyllic way of life had influenced the world, Barbie (Robbie) realized just how bleak reality can be. This is a film that takes aim at toxic masculinity, corporate America, and everyone who tries to minimize your very existence, all through the eyes of a Barbie doll.

With the strength of Robbie's and Gosling's performances, along with other cast members like Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, and so many more, this is also one of the strongest ensembles we've seen in a long time. While the various versions of Barbie and Ken may have been played as largely surface level, they all pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle to create a fascinating and exciting version of Barbie World. Meanwhile, the non-doll side of the cast, led by America Ferrara, showed that as damaged as the world might be, there was still hope for the future.

Of course, another huge point in Barbie's favor was the summer phenomenon known only as Barbenheimer. It's a phrase none of us knew entering the year. As we close out 2023, though, it's hard to imagine never learning about the portmanteau of Greta Gerwig's Barbie and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer.

It was what feels like a rare case of people simply being excited about movies, rather than picking sides to cheer on. Instead of being excited about Barbie or Oppenheimer, many were simply excited. In a summer that saw the movie and TV industries grind to a halt while the WGA and SAG-AFTRA negotiated with the studios for new union contracts, leading to the delay of a number of films and TV shows, Barbie and Oppenheimer gave us a reason to be excited to go to the movies.

In the end, both were victorious. However, Barbie remains the undisputed champion of the year. With the highest box office gross and an indelible mark left on the world that has us dying for a sequel, even if we never get one, Barbie was a game-changing movie experience. How could GameSpot pick anything else for its best movie of 2023?

Barbie kicked ass. My favorite was Godzilla, but picks like these are fantastic, so many triggered “woke, blah blah, woke woke, blah, thesaurus, woke”.

Barbie was low on good jokes, a feminist woke 'girl power' and wasted opportunity. The rant from Farerra proved it was a movie about men controlling the world blah blah.

Hype, high gloss, over promotion and a gorgeous cast and novelty made it become big

MI: Dead Reckoning for me, finally something that simply entertains. No shared universe or forced popculture reference, no political BS.

I've yet to see Oppenheimer, Killers, Rebel Moon, and if we count animation, The Boy and the Heron.

@Destructionzz: MI did nothing well though which is why it flopped. How can you have a rogue AI creating misinformation and not talk about politics? So scared of offending anyone they made the cinematic version of a piece of white bread.

I found this to be an ABYSMAL movie. No other reasoning here either, just the movie was a terrible, awful, dumpster fire of a "film." Aggressively unfunny and written in the cheapest dollar store off brand crayons you can find. It's incredible how much praise it's gotten, I expect it make bank off it's IP alone, but the praise? I must not belong in this world anymore or something, cause this thing is absolute garbage.

@doubtless1: spot on.

Outside of production design and performances, it was absolute garbage.

Incoherent plot, and terrible disjointed messaging, that was really not funny at all, as you said.

@doubtless1: I found it entertaining, with a good message.

I say this as a straight male that has no attachment to the IP in any way. I went in expecting an "ok" movie about Barbie dolls when I was invited along, and came out with my expectations being exceeded.

I can get behind this pick. It wasnt my personal favorite of the year, but I still enjoyed it, and no other movie had nearly the same cultural touchstone impact this year.

@boodger: Barbie is not my favorite movie of the year, but I respect it for what it does.

What really astounds me is just how many people flat out misunderstood the point of the film, on both sides of the spectrum.

If you thought Barbie was "man hating", I'm sorry but you are wrong.

If you thought Barbie was about "girls rule, **** men", I'm sorry but you are also wrong.

1. The first 5 minutes tell you all you needed to know: Barbie is a social commentary gender swap film, men being dominant in the real world and Barbie being dominant in the Barbie world. Because Barbie was dominant in her own world, it did not suddenly justify gender dominance because women are at the helm. The movie in fact, portrayed Barbie as antagonistic, and their biggest character growth was coming to terms that sidelining Ken was wrong and they will work better to include Ken in their legislations.

2. It critiqued both men and women. A lot of people claiming it was anti-male seem to have fallen asleep during the moments the movie also critiqued women. The movie really took the time to give suggestion how men AND women can do better and work together. Didn't really give the vibe that it was anti man or woman, it gave a greater level of optimism how to improve our own understandings of one another.

3. The "**** the patriarchy" speech, never once suggested replacing a patriarchy with a matriarchy. It just said screw these gender dominant societies. Let's break down these walls and do better working together.

I dunno. Barbie was interesting, cool set designs and a great ensemble cast. I wouldn't personally consider it the best movie of the year, but hearing people's takes of the film really gets me to consider how many people straight up didn't watch it and are parroting what some Youtubers complain about, or they straight up did not get the film.

Pretty fascinating social study that has swept into the real world. Definitely served as an interesting litmus test over one's critical thinking skills, on a mass scale.

@jaydan: Great analysis. I also enjoyed the message that men are under a lot of societal pressure too. I think a lot of people missed the message that guys shouldn't have to try so hard, and are "good enough" as they are.

Loved by critics and hated by a strong majority of people. Why do you think people hate it? Because the set pieces are enough to give anyone vertigo, the acting is just bad given the talent and a 1st grader could have written the script.

@vgmkyle: Loved by critics, GameSpot staff are critics, they loved Barbie and gave it MotY. Adds up, no extra justification needed.

And for a movie hated by "a strong majority" it sure made a bunch of money.

I don't get why this movie is getting so many rave reviews and best picture awards from places like IGN and Gamespot. This movie was very dumb, I didn't find it funny (sure there were some funny moments that basically Zoolander and Efl did better), interesting, didn't really have a strong message and just abruptly ended up ignoring everything the movie was trying to say. It is just a bad movie. I know people who found it hilarious and loved the movie, but that to me doesn't translate to best picture. Comedy is very subjective but to be the best picture it should be at least liked by everyone that sees it, or even if you don't like it, you can understand why people love it. Because I am a guy people accuse me of not liking it because it was female empowerment. That is BS because I like plenty of female empowerment movies and Barbie stopped being about that halfway through and just ignored that message by the end. Also using the stereotype that men are sexist pigs is funny but also boring and not true for the majority of men. Having a weird Barbie, played by Kate McKinnon is a genius casting, margot robbie makes a perfect Barbie and Ryan Goslin is a perfect Ken, but the script they got was unfunny and their actions were just a rehash of other movies and shows. I don't get how this movie was great. skimmrank was considered the best horror movie of the year and has nothing to do with feminism and I HATED THE MOVIE. I don't get why people find that movie so great either. So just because I am a man doesn't mean my gender is why I like movies for not. Plain and simple Barbie is a dumb movie that some people find funny. There are lots of great comedies I found hilarious that others hated. That is okay since humor is subjective, but none of them won Best Picture. I don't remember Elf, Hangover, Ghostbusters, Big Lebowski, Galaxy Quest, Spaceballs, Friday, Coming to America, Mrs. Doubtfire, Good Morning Vietnam, or Legally Blond winning or even being nominated for Best Pictures.

I cannot stand for this Bull plop. Caving into what you think society is feeling? Just because the rest of the nation has been brainwashed into thinking that this is a good movie, does not make it a good movie. It really and truly is an awful movie. One of the worst films I have ever seen.

@KingofRogues: Barbie is only popular because the world is brainwashed, and GameSpot only gave it MotY because they're sucking up to ... someone.

Or because a lot of people had fun watching it, including enough of the GameSpot staff.

But, sure, it could all be a conspiracy.

Opinions and all, but Barbie was probably the worst movie I’ve seen this year. Putting it ahead of Oppenheimer or Killers of the flower moon is more approval of the message than the entertainment value itself.
