Batman: Arkham City tops GameFly's 2011 most requested list

Caped Crusader's latest outing proves to be non-PC game rental service's most popular cross-platform title last year.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 may have been the biggest game of 2011 in terms of sales, but it was not the most requested title at game rental company GameFly. Instead, that mark goes to Rocksteady's well-received Batman: Arkham City.

Bats trump bullets, at least for GameFly users.
Bats trump bullets, at least for GameFly users.

Directly following Arkham City on GameFly's 2011 most requested cross-platform titles list are Activision's latest shooter Modern Warfare 3 and Deep Silver's zombie game Dead Island.

Platform-specific top-requested titles included Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (PS3), Batman: Arkham City (Xbox 360), Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii), Super Mario 3D Land (3DS), and New Super Mario Bros. (DS).

Of note, there were only two new intellectual properties to break GameFly's top 10 lists: Dead Island and Rage. GameFly's 2011 most requested lists are below.

Love Rage, it is a fantastic game. I am surprised it ranked down at 8th. I am highly surprised though that I.D. didn't try their hand at making a team death match based experience for players online. Quake III Arena was a great game back in it's day and it was certainly disappointing that Rage doesn't have any TDM to it online. Anyone know if I.D. plains to maybe patch or send out DLC that may include TDM for the game? It would be great if I didn't have to wait till Rage 2 for TDM.

yea they should make a points system for returning crap early which gives you a discount on next month's fee or an extra queue slot good for 1 rental(you have to pay more per month to have more than 1 game at a time) or something. i can't speak for all games but I rented Zelda Twilight Princess, Okami, Metroid Other M, and Metroid Prime Trilogy. Okami may not be a good example while it's rated high it's not very popualr, but most i waited was about 5 days and that was on Other M which just came out at the time. other 2 were sent instantly. they have a 10 day free trial you could just pick a few of the most popular games. their shipping issues seem pretty sporadic person to person and it might be a good way to test it

@ SlowMotionKarma That's one of the reason's I'm still on the fence about GF. Keeping a game as long as you want means other people can't play it. It definitely didn't help Blockbuster stay in business. All jokes aside, if you pay a monthly fee for a movie/game service where you can keep the game as long as you have a service plan, people get lazy and don't return things as fast. Back when I used Netflix DVD, I'd forget about the classic movies I had sitting on the counter because I'd found something new at Redbox.

I've been thinking about getting a Gamefly account. Is it really that good, or is it better to just stay old school and have friends you can borrow from? I know there's a return center near me, so games that are available wouldn't take too long.

@ZOD777 Well, me and 3 other friends all have high end PC's, and we all recently played through the entire game together, and none of us had any problems through the entire length of the game. No crashes, freezes, slowdowns, save losses, or ANYTHING. All 4 of us.

mw3 coming up in the top ranks of sales is what thats killing gaming. We might as well be replaced by machines who repeat the same buying pattern every year.

Bizarre. I get a thumbs for liking a game. Well each to their own. Most of the games I've bought in '11 don't even make the list as they are Indie.

@ZOD777 I was never expecting to get every game at the top of my list day 1. I expected to get one of my top 3, or top 5 even, games quicker than 3 months after release. I NEVER got a top 5 game, even after 2 years of subscription. I also did the "one game at a time in queue" and weeks later all I got was an e-mail asking me to add more games. "At least 10 for best results." I didn't expect to get everything I wanted right away. Heck, I didn't expect to get them within the first month after release. When I never get a game in my top 5 for a year and a half straight, that's a sign I should move on. What's worse is most of the games I add aren't even "new releases". Maybe 2 of my top 5 were new releases. ANYWAY, that's my personal experience and since GameFly was just my "way to play games I'm not going to pay full price for" it was too much hassle to pay $14/month for.

I have it for PC, and thankfully am not one of the many(?) who have serious issues with it. Big PhysX lag in one Boss battle (The Joker), that many suffer from but aside from that am having a whale of a time with the game on DX11. It's like "B:AA" on steroids:) A brilliant game.

@SlowMotionKarma I understand your frustration, but you also have to take into consideration that some people are holding on to the copies for several weeks if not a month or more before sending it back. It isn't really the same as Netflix where people watch a movie in one night and send it right back.

For those of you having gamefly problems getting Batman, here is the secret. Delete your queue. Gamefly looks through your top 5 or 6 games and picks one thats immediately available and ships it. It thinks that because you put it in your queue then thats gonna make you happy. If you want AC or any game, delete all the other games from you queue except that one. I guarantee the next game you get will be the game you really wanted, even if you have to wait an extra few days to get it. I learned that lesson the hard way, and now I get what I want, and its worth the wait to play the game you are craving instead of choice 5. (Lets face it, you really didn't want to play choice 5 anyway. You just thought "i'll just put some games that may be good in the queue", but thats how GF gets you.

if you like the the combat & stealth aspects, it has alot more replayability than most games out now(singleplayer) in challenge maps. i don't count hunting trophies replayability either especially when it's for concept art or trophies you'll look at once. but they also unlock maps & interview tapes i think even though GFWLive has actually broken the game for some people, it shouldn't be counted towards the game rating, it's not happening to everyone and

@ChromeOC I think the combat could do with a rework due to it being a bit too floaty and over powered (able to knock people down so quick) but you've got to think where they are coming from at least. They are trying to make a super hero game so he's got to be a little tough and feel fun but yeah I agree with you only on the matter of combat, I think it has some replayability due to the fun factor and the way it made such a nice looking and detailed city to roam in is quite impressive. It deserves the score but could look into the combat a little in my opinion.

Am I the only one who thinks Arkham City is incredibly overated? Eh story, eh graphics, mediocre combat system, no replayability (unless you're the sort of person who enjoys wandering around with no purpose other than to collect some trophies), Games for Windows live etc. I'd give it a 7, yet I see it has a metacritic of 90+!

@SlowMotionKarma When I was with gamefly, the way I guaranteed I would get the game I wanted was by having only that game in my queue. Then when they ship that add another one and just do the games one at a time.

i just gave up on waiting for DX11 to be fixed before playing it. yea a game shouldn't be shipped with a broken feature, but it's so unimportant when I actually saw how little the improvement was i didn't even care anymore. so with DX11 ignored, it runs as good or better than most games out now in comparison and playable even on some low-end machines, DX9 crappy performance is pretty rare

What I would like to see is "GameFly's Most Fulfilled Game." I was with them for 2 years and NEVER did I get a game at the top of my list naturally. I wasn't expecting day 1 delivery from them or anything, but when I'm waiting MONTHS for the game at the top of my queue (which I added the day it became available to add) it's pretty frustrating. Why even let users rank them if there is no realistic fulfillment? The only way I ever got a game at the top of my list was after CALLING their well-hidden number and complaining. They would give me one of those $5 credits for game purchases and ship the #1 game on my list immediately. After I realized the only way to get the games I really wanted was by following this process, I decided to just quit them. I understand there's a global queue process but after 2 years I kinda feel like I should get SOME games a little faster than 2-3 months later. *sigh*

What exactly were you thinking when you decided to call Gamefly a "Non-PC rental service". Everyone knows you can't rent PC games. There's no logical reason, that I can think of, why you would call it that. I'd like to hear what you have to say.

AC was one of the better games I have ever played. You don't just play Batman, you -are- Batman. Each decision, each punch, each reversal makes you feel more in character. The bosses are gruesome and real. And for those who haven't ever read comics or haven't seen the 90's animated series, this game represents a Batman most of our society hasn't ever met, and its one they won't forget. This -is- the definitive super hero game.

Fun and great game, at the beginning the side missions threw me off a little (considering the linearity of ArkhamAsylum) but later on their integration with the main story was really cool. Game of the year imo.

@tachsniper, superman is pretty much invincible.. Batman is bad ass and has a few combat styles like stealth or gadgets or head on combat. With Superman, its just a bulletproof man of steel who can just freeze, melt or plain crush your enemies in a jiffy. No fun playing him..

Who would've thought Batman: Arkham City would be a contender for Game of the Year 2011 against games like Skyrim, Zelda, etc. Well, having just beaten Arkham City the other day, I now know why; one of the best games I have ever played. Batman: Arkham City - Game of the Year! (Skyrim: a close contender as well)

This is the first successful open world Batman game if there has ever been one before that I can't think of. Rocksteady deserves their praise. Now if only they could take it one step further and have a city as big as GTA and have a Batwing and Batmobile as additional transportation.

This is because Arkham City is best played as a rental. You can beat the game and do all side missions in 6 hours, including Catwoman. Everything else is just achievements and Riddler trophies. Not saying it's a bad game, it's just not that long. Skyrim, on the other hand, is a must-buy.
