Battleborn Early Sales Exceeding First Borderlands, Dev Says

Creative director Randy Varnell says he is "cautiously optimistic."

Gearbox Software's new shooter Battleborn is off to a solid start, it seems. Creative director Randy Varnell said during a recent Twitch Kalology livestream that sales of the game are "tracking just ahead" of the first Borderlands game back in 2009. Overall, Varnell said he is "cautiously optimistic" about Battleborn.

"Ultimately, Borderlands [was an] extremely successful new game for us, and even Borderlands 1 went on to sell, I think, almost 7, 8 million units in its lifetime," he said, as reported by VideoGamer.com. "Battleborn is actually tracking just ahead of where Borderlands was on the sales, and we think it's going to be a game that is going to work like that. A decent, solid launch. We're seeing steady and growing user counts on all three platforms, and hoping that word of mouth is going to take us even further."

Now Playing: Battleborn - Review

Overall, Varnell said Battleborn's launch was "pretty good." After the rush of new users on launch day, May 3, the game has seen growth on a daily basis "at a steady rate."

"Hopefully, we'll continue to see that go up," Varnell said.

The first Borderlands sold 2 million copies in its first two months back in 2009.

Battleborn debuted at the top of the charts in the UK during its launch week. However, it remains to be seen how well the game has sold in North America.

2K Games has not yet shared any official sales numbers, though we may learn more later this month when parent company Take-Two Interactive reports earnings on May 18.

In February, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said Battleborn represents the company's "biggest investment" ever, calling the game a "big bet."

"We've invested more than Borderlands 1 and 2 added together into Battleborn," he said at the time. "And we don't even know if people will be interested or not."

In other news about Battleborn, Gearbox said at PAX East this year that the game's DLC will include references to Borderlands 3.

Borderlands had to compete against RAGE. Battleborn has to compete against Overwatch.

@elheber: And Modern Warfare 2. It released just a couple weeks after Borderlands. Now that's impressive.

And Overwatch isn't quite a direct competitor for Battleborn. Battleborn has a campaign and LoL like PVP. Overwatch will never be anything more than another team based shooter, albeit a very good one. I can see people quickly picking up on the difference.

That said, there is still Paragon and Lawbreakers.

@Barighm:Let's all (all of us) agree on two things: #1. That Battleborn is significantly different than Overwatch. And #2. That most people don't know this.

Yes, point #1 is true, but for my comment about Battleborn competing with Overwatch to be true we really only need #2 to be true. Gearbox and Randy Pitchford in particular coined the term "Hero Shooter" and everything they used to describe that term as it relates to their game also applied to Overwatch. It's like if you invent a new specialty pizza with fruit and you call it an "island style" pizza; you can't blame people for assuming it's like Hawaiian pizza if the entire marketing push kept saying things that made it sound similar, even though the "island" you were referring to was Sicily and the fruits you used were figs.

With the exception of mentions of the co-op campaign, the similarities in how he describes the game are uncanny. Most of the promotional material did the same.

I think the biggest factor is the timing. Battle born is launching the same week as Uncharted 4 and Doom, which have much more hype and marketing put into them with an already established fanbase.

Meanwhile, we still have Over watch, Blood and Wine, and many other big titles coming this month to top it off.

that's unfortunate. goes to show what marketing can do for a (flawed) game. i expect sales will decline very quickly once the smoke settles.

@Xristophoros: There's nothing wrong with Battleborn. I see more flaws in Overwatch (no campaign, modes being removed, fewer heroes, loose controls). The only thing Overwatch has on Battleborn is the graphics.

That and the game is more fun.

PSA : Borderlands had a very rocky start and was only selling well after a pretty long time.
