Battlefield 3 not coming to Steam

Electronic Arts' long list of digital retail partners leaves off Valve's online distribution hub.

Last month, rumor had it that DICE's upcoming modern-day shooter Battlefield 3 would skip Valve's digital distribution outlet Steam altogether. Now, publisher Electronic Arts has confirmed that speculation.

Battlefield 3 won't break into Steam.
Battlefield 3 won't break into Steam.

The list of global digital retail partners for Battlefield 3 is extensive, but it does not include Steam--the digital distribution juggernaut with over 30 million users. As of press time, EA had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment on the matter.

Battlefield 3 skipping Steam is not an entirely wild scenario. EA recently opened its own digital distribution shop--Origin--and has tussled with Steam lately, pulling Dragon Age II, Crysis 2, and others from Steam.

For more on Battlefield 3, which is due out on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on October 25, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

I believe some of the commentators here are jelly, Steam does not require 1 login for all games. Have you tried GTA4 on Steam it f-ing requires 3 logins to play!!! and on Origin at least I don't have to have it running in the background to play my game like Steam forcing me to run it every time i wanna play MY game even if offline...ef u Steam. Finally someone standing up to Valve's bs, you know they had their issue with EA cause they were selling their dlc from in-game stores which is cheaper for the consumer but doesn't give Valve a cut from the pie, they want EA to be like Activi$ion and sell their overpriced dlc through Steam so they can get $ome.

@Valen_Ca I wont arge with that; Steam is a really good service. I get your point; same as Blizzard with battle.net. Still I don't see big problem in having to remember 2 difefrent logins (this is personal, of course). On the other hand, only big publishers could afford they own network appart from Valve. EA is one, Activision is the other, and that's pretty much it for the moment. Lets not forget that this was because of a policy disagrement, not money; putting your game on Steam saves a lot in diostribution since Valve will take care of making it available for everyone. And last, but not least, EA is still the distributor of every Valve game in physical format. If they piss off Valve too much they would loose the royalties for that service (and that is a lot of money).

EA might as well just develop their own game console and only sell their games for that.

let this damm EA dig their own grave. awfull games on a row, screwing up many franchises, getting out of main distribution outlet, buying out then dumbing down independent softwarehouses. they´ll bear their fruits in a couple of years

Though i prefer Steam i know i already preordered BF3 even though it's going to be only on Origin. If they were selling the game in a freakin' sh*t can i would still buy THE BF3! I just know that's the game all my friends are gonna get and we're gonna have tons of fun playing (or frustrating, depends on how polished it'll be at release :P).

@armo4rs3: I am going to play it on my PS3 since my PC is not that good. However, I can totally understand your point as there are several games I haven't bought because they are not on steam.

That sounds like a bad plan. Skipping the longest distribution channel on PC to try to advertise their own, little known, shop for a game they are pushing that hard is not a good strategy. If they want to make the origin deal sweeter, they should try to give more content to it (not like exclusive retail content is anything new); make it so people would rather go to them than steam, not just cut off the other options.

I don't know why some steam lovers are making it such a big deal. If you don't like EA's decision, just don't buy the game...like the company will shutdown if you don't. Atleast now there will be no host leaving the game and screwing the rest players, no port forwarding mess. Stick to MW3 and enjoy 8 vs 8 deathmatches inside a matchbox of a map :-D peace.....

I wouldn't mind buying from origin if I can activate in Steam (as I sometimes do buying physical copies), it's just so convenient having everything under one roof with great community features. Quite frankly no steam = no sale

So no Mass Effect 3 then either? Looks like it's Gamersgate or Impulse. Origin only guarantees download availability for one year.

@Warlord_Irochi Steam is good because it has really good backing from most major studios, meaning only one login is needed for your entire game library. Now you will need at least 2 and I am willing to bet that if Origin succeeds then other large publishers will look at pulling out of Steam and forcing people onto their own stores.

Does the platform hurt that much?. If you want to play a game you play it, the platform should is irrelevant if you really like it. Better if the game where on Steam too, but having one game outside of it is not going to hurt that much, or people is no longer going to buy games that are not on Steam? (hope not, that would be supporting a monopoly)

@MasterDZ0522 I never said anything about CS being bad games. What's going to happen is that millions of people are going to buy CoD on steam and EA isn't giving Activision ANY competition. The only other FPS that could give MW 3 some competition is RO 2 and Rage. But naturally of course MW 3 will get more buys and people will be playing on it for months to come.

Steam rox. nuff said really. EA wants to have thier own thing, cool. Theres only 3 or so EA games that are any good. FIFA , The SIMS(which the best one is 2 and is made by MAXIS anyway) and maybe tiger woods golf. NBA 2k owns them in basketball and thier Madden is stale as hell and isnt even on PC anymore. Obviously BF3 really is the only real reason to go to origin for their games. Crysis 1 (not crappy Warhead) was better than Crysis 2 by MILES and MILES and MILES and can be picked up for $3.95 at XMAS on STEAM. The only irritating thing with STEAM sometimes is the offline mode, you have to delete the clientregistryblob, update STEAM then go offline mode and you have to pretty much start STEAM everyday in offline mode to keep it going for some reason. But a part from that, i havent had that many issues with STEAM. Accept amazing hot deals a FREE friends list throughout the year and the BEST XMAS specials ive ever seen. At least Valve isnt charging us a sub fee for a freinds list, like Activision is about to.

"Crim86", you don't know what you're talking about, foo'. VALVe/Steam has done way more for me than EA has ever done/will _ever_ do & I'll be supporting the former in this. Ima happy you need your shiny, degradable, scratchable disks, but I prefer to have my games stored securely off-site. /nub

sorry ea but steam have done a lot for me, yeah it may not be perfect. but its friends list and communities are unmatched, the support they give to indie devs is top. and the sales are amazing. so removing your games from steam is not gona help you catch back up to them. steam are years ahead.

For my tuppence worth, I hate flame wars, I hate the idea of *fan boys* and most of all I hate the over-rated concept pc gaming being better than console gaming. Each to their own I say, go with what cheers you up the most and let the world rotate on its axis in peace. There is enough aggro around without flamers adding to it. Chill peeps, enjoy the awesome productions coming our way. Support the devs of your choice and keep gaming sweet. See you online where ever, just try not to kill me so much. Kidding!!!:D

lol! is THIS really the deal breaker for some of you guys? Is THIS the reason you will not play the game? So, EA decide to manage their own download service instead of paying fees to a rival publisher and by that be able to customize the service to it's own needs (battlelog integration maybe)and so on.... but noooo they should use Steam just because it's so hard to fill in another registration form ... jeebus!!

Ive just about made my mind up , i think i might be going modern Warfare 3 over battlefield 3. For a number of reasons. 1 :> they want everyone to be able to play the game on every platform = more people to enjoy the game (more sales for them). They arent caring about just HIGH END users. Battlefield only cares about the high end users. 2 :> Modern Warfare 3 will be on STEAM and is obviously happy with giving Valve a % for advertising the game for them. Modern Warfare 3 will run on XP and DX9 mode as well as high end rigs. Its also going to be really fun and im sick of Battlefield fanboys telling the world how much every game on the planet SUX compared to Battlefield.

well Battlefield is actually the ONLY game worth buying from EA for PC, id rather play Sims 2 and Simcity from MAXIS games over anything EA has produced for pc and Crysis 1 is the better game over Crysis 2 so bla again. What isnt going to work, is A LOT of poeple have paid for games from STEAM and they are kind of tied into STEAM because without STEAM. you cant play the games you buy off there. So if EA likes it or not , people will still be using STEAM for a very VERY long time. Its also an awesome advetising medium for budget and ol school games and new developers. The friends list and stat system is FREE!!!!!!! and all games updates are for FREE. + theres awesome DEALS on STEAM that are unmatched anywhere. + they arent contributing to used sales because all the money goes STRAIGHT to the original publishers accept for a % of what Valve gets for the purchase. So companies liek EA complain abotu used game sales Yet STEAM is completely supporting new sales even if they are old. There is a LOT to like about STEAM.

@tachsniper I didn't say "because DICE has worked hard, they deserve my money." I'm a fan of DICE. They've given me hundreds of hours of entertainment. 800 hours on Bad Company 2 alone, don't have counts for 2142 or BF2, but each could easily be twice that. They need only ask, I'll keep throwing money at them. If I could do so without giving EA their cut, I'd be even happier. Not all DICE's releases are hits. BC2 is, IMO, the ugly stepchild of the Battlefield series. But it is still a great game. BC2:Vietnam was unimpressive, but if my $15 helped ensure BF3 happens, I'm okay with that. For the $50 I payed for BC2, I've so far payed only 6 cents per hour of entertainment. More if I total in Vietnam and SPECACT, but not by much. I'm going to get flame for this, I just know it.

Hating EA for this is pointless, but honestly this is a huge mistake on their part. Whatever money they think they can make from not accepting Valve's apparently limiting terms (of which I have neither a negative nor positive opinion as far as this issue is concerned, although in general I support Valve) they will lose tenfold by ignoring the single most successful, convenient, and beloved digital distribution platform for the PC (the platform where this game will probably see the most success, critically and commercially). Not buying the game because of this is stupid, I'm sure it will be excellent and can't wait to play it, but this is a terrible mistake on EA's move. I hope it will be resolved and BF3 ends up on Steam at some point, but I doubt it considering how much of a publicity stunt this has become.

Is this really that big of a deal? Most people will probably buy it from an actual store anyway, while the people who desperately want to download will go to Origin. And the experience of the game when you download it from Origin will be the same as if you had downloaded it form Steam.

@crim86 I don't want multiple programs on my computer designed to do the same job. I already have Steam, I've already invested lots of money there. I will not be investing in Origin, Steam already provides me everything I want. This move by EA is about greed. The conflict between EA and Valve is about customer data. When you buy a game from Steam, you are a customer of Valve. Valve will sell you the game on EA's behalf, but to Valve, you are their customer not EA's. As such, Valve will not provide your details to EA. They consider that private. EA wants that data so they can produce better in-game advertising and make even more money. EA and Valve will not agree on this, so rather than EA accepting the fact (as they have in the past) they are taking their toys and going home. To hell with EA.

@Majkic666 As a software developer myself, I will not steal software. I actually hold a patent for an anti-piracy scheme. As a consumer, I don't give my money to companies I hate. As a Battlefield veteran, I simply can't skip this game. DICE has worked hard on this game and deserves my money. Best thing we can do as a group is not give into Origin. If temptation means you have to own this game, get it from anybody else. Don't go to Origin. Help make this move a failure. I'm actually curious which retailer takes the biggest cut. Though I bet they all buy the copies from EA at the same price.

Not everyone knows this: Origin is now the EA Store. You don't have to preorder a digital copy from Origin...you can actually preorder a hard copy of games and have them ship it to your place of living. With that said, it's still a stupid move on EA's part. They're still losing business from this. Also, if I hear anything about the Used Game market hurting EA's sales...I'ma lose it and go postal on 'em. Bad business tactics hurt sales 100x worse!!!

This won't make much difference for diehard fans of the franchise, but it will cost EA in the form of customers that were mildly interested but not dead set on buying it. Steam is my one and only choice for gaming, so (with the exception of a very few games I'd buy no matter what) if I can't get something there, I'll just forget about it a week after it's released once all the reviews are in and the game news media have moved on. I have limited gaming time, and I will buy what's in my face before looking elsewhere. If it was on Steam, chances are I would have bought it eventually. Marketing 101. Oh well, EA's loss. I'll spend that money on something else.
