Battlefield 3 premium service launching June 4 - Report

Source says new content service to arrive during E3 next month will offer content drops with exclusive items for DICE's modern-day shooter.

Electronic Arts will release a premium service for Battlefield 3 on June 4 (the day of EA's E3 2012 media briefing), a "reliable source" has told Battlefieldo. According to the site, the service will be titled Battlefield Premium, and it will grant players a range of exclusive content.

"Battlefield Premium is coming!" rumor says.

The first piece of content to be given to Battlefield Premium members will include a knife and a black dog tag, as well as a set of soldier camo, weapon camo, and assignments. Future content was not revealed, and it was not mentioned if Battlefield Premium will incur a subscription fee.

If Battlefield Premium comes to fruition, it will follow Activision's Call of Duty: Elite, a free and paid service that gives members downloadable content and exclusives, among other things.

Additionally, EA has hinted at a Battlefield subscription service in the past. In March, EA Games executive vice president Patrick Soderlund said, "Like all other companies, we're looking at how we can maximize our investment in this, get the most out of our investment, and get more people playing this product. That may take us to different places, but we're not really talking about where that is yet."

On top of Battlefield Premium, the site is also reporting that DICE is preparing to launch a new Battlefield 3 expansion pack during March 2013. It will follow the End Game DLC, which was announced in March 2012 as the final add-on headed to the new shooter.

I made the stupid mistake of getting Elite.. 6 months down the track I still can't even log into it and access anything. Lesson learned. I won't be paying for any subscriptions again. Especially if all i get is a knife, dog tag and some extra assignments initially. BF3 is awesome, but I wont support a subscription.

@i_like_pie223 Seriously...IMO people are nothing but annoying hypocrites who bring it on themselves they whine and whine about how activision and EA do nothing but "steal" your money....ya no it is all the idiot consumers who keep shelling out for yearly releases...Now now not to say yearly releases are bad in honesty its good business on CoDs part to have 2 devs do a game every other year (though since infinity ward is a shadow of its former self its all MEH to me) The stupid BS is how they release all these DLCs that keep people giving them money ALL YEAR ROUND right up until the next one comes out...that is what makes me just nod in disgust and then the people pay for it....and i bet some of the people who whine about it are still paying for it just for "peer pressures" sake...yes CoD is nothing but peer pressure if people would all say F it and just keep the current CoD game and not buy the next one...guess what...OMG they would think about making higher quality CoD to draw back consumers...but nope the sheep have been herded already so the routine is already set and has not needed adjustment BECAUSE OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU....you know those who buy all the "extra" bull sh*t.

Well done to the 10 million players that subscribed to the COD elite rubbish, now every developer is going to copy Activision.

I didn't even buy MW3 fullstop becuase of that stupid subscription rubbish. I mean each game is like £40 and they want you to pay double on top just so you can be on an elite leaderboards etc.

I understand when dev's make future DLC's (not ones already on disk but ones they actually make to expand the game) that's fine but yearly subs for a console game that's a waste of time.

@solo1g You seem to have gotten the crazy idea that purchasing Elite is a mandatory part of buying Call of Duty. The game is £40 unless you want to spend extra money on future content. If being on an "Eliteleaderboard" isn't your cup of tea, the solution is very simple: DON'T BUY ELITE. Not being on a fancy leaderboard won't ruin your life.

@Senor_Kami yea but the point is they shouldn't be asking for extra money for something that should be in the game. Killzone 3 had a clan system and leaderbaords etc didn't see them asking more moeny for it.

@i-like-me Well maybe i'm misunderstanding, but if you run it at 60 fps it's gonna look like Call of Poopie, and that's far worse, but i agree BF 3 doesn't look that great at all. Should've stuck with the older Frostbite Engine. Too many jaggies, fake looking backdrops, water looks crappy. Gee, maybe they are copying COD.

@jagdedge124 @i-like-me I run this game at a FPS of about 40, all settings on highest, with a resolution of 6060*1080.... just buy better pc's, that should solve the problem, or else go play it on XBox or PS3.. on topic tho; monthly fees suck always, and buying DLC is okay (as it comes with new maps)... but paying for extra weapons is shit, getting owned by someone not as good as you with a overpowered weapon, just because he has money to spend...

on pc, EA was the first one to jump on the $60 price bandwagon so I'm not really surprised by this. EA is a huge follower of activision. they'll copy whatever activision do.

WTF i am pretty sure DICE said they would never have a premium service like activisions bunk and now we get this...

What are they doing.. BF3 is the best FPS game on the market but if they bring in this service im pretty sure i wont be playing it anymore and really not buying any exp packs..

What a shame..

How many still play this anyway? Most of the people I know have moved onto other games. If they wanted to add a premium service, they should have added it from the start if they wanted good results.

I dont understand this generation of gamers man. I cant believe you are willing to spend money on something that does NOTHING for your experience. yay a couple of xtra weapons, big deal people seriously. Its like if it cost $20 to goto the movies and the usher said you can watch the credits for an Xtra $20, you dont need to watch the credits but if you dont pay to watch the xtra credits you cant see the ending..Thats how bad its getting.

I'm a Battlefield fan, but a while ago I read an article on here that quoted a DICE employee, saying that Battlefield "doesn't need a subscription service like other competitors" (talking about CoD Elite), yet now I read this? Disappointing.

they work for a company and that company demands services that they may or may not necessarily want in their games.

e.g Bioware designing games that are out their normal design scope, Mass Effect on the PS3, Mass effect 3 multiplayer and its deeply interwoven structure.

EA pays the bills

Lesson learned yet ? Don't buy their products.

To EA you, the customer, are only relevant as long as they profit from you, they don't care about you as a gamer (best example, their "helpdesk", unfinished DRM loaded products and the product pricing), you're just a cashcow that needs to be milked.

Worst of all, most of you, the "shut up and take my money" folk that "keep throwing their wallet at the monitor but nothing happens" brought all of this onto themself.

What do you expect to get in return when EA realises that all these sheep keep happily paying for overpriced products - that they lower the price ? Hell no, that would be customer care and is inefficient for business.

Instead they add more and more mini transactions, pay to play, full price DLC (simple texture packs that took about a day to produce) and "premium" services so you have to pay even more to keep playing.

Really sad for all the good developers and their actually good products getting destroyed by EA's pricing, marketing and bad customer care policies.

What's next for Battlefield 4 ? Getting only the first level and having to pay for each additional one ? Oh no, wait, silly me, Singleplayer is so retro - of course it will be a MMO with a monthly subscription service and a pay to win model.

@bloody-hell overpriced? gamers put a value to that. and no, ea is not the only one milking the customers..remember activision started with elite, remember xbox live?.but then again you don't have to pay if you don't want. stop calling people sheep because they find value in the products ea produces

@jsmoke03 What are you, a 12 yo? Of course everyone "remembers" xbox live. What he's simply saying, is that if people keep paying for Dlc and other micro-transactions, producers will keep on milking the product. Of course EA's not the only one, but they're one of (if not the) worst.
