Battlefield fights to maintain UK number one

DICE's shooter retains the top spot, while Uncharted 3 debuts at number two, Sonic Generations in the top 10.

EA's heavy-hitter Battlefield 3 maintained the top spot for a second week in the UK All-Formats chart, fending off newcomer Uncharted 3. This is a record for any game in the series, with previous game Battlefield: Bad Company 2 being knocked from its top position by Final Fantasy XIII in the second week. BF3 managed to cling to the top spot despite a 54 percent drop in sales since launch week.

Drake didn't quite have the guns to overhaul Battlefield 3.
Drake didn't quite have the guns to overhaul Battlefield 3.

Battlefield's multiplatform nature prevented Uncharted 3's sales figures from blasting it from number one, with Uncharted 3 instead settling at the not-unexpected number two slot. Sony's extensive marketing strategy for the action game ensured that Uncharted 3 took the PS3 number one spot and became the 11th biggest UK launch for a PS3 game, with unit sales up 37 percent compared to predecessor Uncharted 2.

Sega's latest entry into the Sonic series--Generations--debuts at a respectable 10, whilst GoldenEye: Reloaded doesn't quite make it into the top 10, debuting at 16.

Slipping down the charts, The Sims 3 Pets plummets from 7 to 17, whilst Rage almost falls from the top 20, falling 10 places to 20. Forza 3 drops one place down to 7, and Batman Arkham City sees a fall from 2 to 4.

F1 2011 makes a notable climb from 15 to 11, whilst Michael Jackson: The Experience sees a surge in sales, boosting from 29 to 15.

This Week's Top 10 ending November 5, 2011:
1. Battlefield 3
2. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
3. FIFA 12
4. Batman: Arkham City
5. Just Dance 3
6. Football Manager 2012
7. Forza Motorsport 4
8. Zumba Fitness
9. Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure
10. Sonic Generations

@Raxyman I'm not letting my opinion cloud my judgement or being controversially biased, care to point out where? You have, case in point, you stated MoH has "been to so many eras" implying more then those visited in Battlefield, that's absurd. DICE like may other game developers to market their product, it's the foundations of the business, like it or not. This is where your argument is flawed, you're forgetting the gaming industry is at the end of the day a business. That doesn't mean however they aren't good developers nor that they don't care about their fan base because that's just not true. You haven't stated so directly but you've expressed you're distaste for the Battlefield series and one of your links implies you dislike the CoD franchise as well. Innovation isn't necessary if for the most part it's polished, Metal Gear Solid 4 is a good example of this or the Japanese industry as a whole. Very rare they innovate but what they do very well is improve upon ideas that already exist. My points have clearly demonstrated this, that's been my point all along.

@MEDzZ3RO You keep repeating that i let my opinion cloud my judgement. But you do exactly the same thing. I AM hard-headed, i'm not denying it, but as i said, i showed those links for you to see that DICE does marketable products, not games. That is my main argument. And that's what i wanted you to see. And about MoH, the series are exclusively set in WW2, that is, until that recent failure. And i haven't said neither CoD or BF are bad games, i personally like CoD more than BF, but to me both are originality killers. MoH always seemed fresh, like leveling weapons in Airborne.

@Raxyman It's not a tribute, more of a factual presentation. You're being blinded by your own biased opinion, even if you dislike the majority of DICE developed games you can't then state they're bad developers for the same reason. The quality's there even if it isn't to your taste. You are refuting fact, Battlefield has been in multiple settings (fact not opinion) and DICE do listen to their fans (Desert Combat, PC main platform, free VIP DLC, Vietnam, Battlefield 2..etc..) (again, fact). You're letting your opinion get in the way, I don't like Halo but I'd be biased to state they're not good developers. DICE were only involved with the multiplayer portion, it was decent online but it had a stronger campaign. You're born in 1994 and imply you're an old-school gamer, it's not viable because you'd have been 3 in 1997. I've been playing games before you were born. Those shooters are the godfathers of the genre but they're dinosaurs now, you only have to look at the Duke Nukem reboot or Rage to see that the developers haven't kept up with the times. Take Goldeneye 007, a superb game for it's era, play it now and it's not aged well. You've sent me two links that are completely off topic, I'm not referring to any other fps besides the brief references to other shooters. We're talking about DICE as a developer, have you forgotten? MoH has almost exclusively been set in World War 2, where's the variety. Ironic that you should despise the Call Of Duty series because a lot of the original Medal Of Honor developers are now in Infinity Ward or Respawn Entertainment.

@MEDzZ3RO You just sent me a 45 minute tribute video of a game i already said i don't like it? I told you, i have played a couple of the old ones and i've played both BC's, i've played BF3 over a friend house and sorry, i wasn't slightest amused by it. Do you want a FPS that's been to so many eras? Medal of Honor, game which DICE screwed up with it so bad with this last game. DOOM, Wolfenstein and Duke Nukem are the creators of FPS genre and i'm sure neither DICE or any other FPS nowadays live up to those legends. I'm 17 years old and i'm a old school gamer, BECAUSE THESE NOWADAYS SHOOTERS SUCKS. I'm not refuting "facts" i'm refuting your opinion, and if you want MY set of facts here they are. << LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Those aren't stating DICE is a bad producer, but state my point perfectly. And unless you want me to send a fan video of old school shooter to prove my point you shoul understand perfectly what i said.

@Raxyman Instead of refuting my facts you could at least try to back yourself up with your own set of facts. You're obviously unfamiliar with the franchise to try and make light of the statement, here's a video you'd do well to watch. I can't think of another fps of the top of my head that's been to so many eras. << LINK REMOVED >>

@Raxyman DICE do care for their fans, past releases and BETA players demonstrate this. I get you're annoyed ME2 hasn't been announced yet but DICE have always done fps games, same way as ID have always done fps games. It's what they do. Homefront feels like a copy of BF largely because their studio was once part of DICE, they were the ones behind the Desert Combat mod and helped with Battlefield 2. CoD feels the same because it's been running off essentially the same engine since CoD 2. Battlefield has changed immensely, from WW2, to Vietnam, to Modern Warfare, to future warfare before returning to these past periods. Destruction and engine advancement have brought massive changes too.

@Raxyman DICE deliver where they always have, the multiplayer; the campaign is a mere complement to the package. I don't think it's necessary much like MAG or Counterstrike. That said DICE delivered with the campaign in Bad Company 2. EA set the DLC prices much like Activision do with the CoD franchise, not DICE. DICE as developers do their duty well, you can't argue that when compared with the CoD DLC offerings £10 for Vietnam was good value for money. It's not a sign that they're more money orientated it's a sign the industry has changed. The BC2 VIP maps were essentially free. A rumour's better then nothing, expect an announcement. They've already stated ME isn't dead. As far as Indie games go they should take a leaf out of Rayman Origins book and make it a fully fledged release. By all accounts it's basically an Indie game with all the trimmings of a full game. Prices drop quickly and the used and rental market for stores like CEX is bigger then ever, it' not long before full releases are hovering around those prices anyway.

@MEDzZ3RO And lastly, the indie games, i didn't said ALL of them were good, some indie producers also don't cara about their games' quality. Limbo itself is overpriced, but take a look at Sequence, it's a hell of a game for 5 bucks, what about Amnesia? 20 dollars, but when you see the game you just know it was a fair price. Hard Reset, $30, with a campaing larger than BF or CoD... That's the indie i like, the ones that make you feel that awesome feeling when you buy a game, instead of the feeling of buying a rip-off of what once was a good game. BF, CoD, Homefront, and such. I still stand for what i said, unless if by "fans" you meant "bigger mass of buyers", no, DICE don't care for their fans.

@MEDzZ3RO DICE is not a pinch like Valve. Don't push things. Comparing even the slightest of thing between them is already unfair. My point is not whether DICE is or not a good developer, i don't like discussing that because my opinion is always different from the "consensus" that surround nowadays games. My point is that DICE uses a mentality like "Why make AWESOME games when good sells better?", and Activision plays by the same rule. I liked DICE when they did ME, they showed that they weren't afraid to step out of the comfort zone, that is, until that "shove off" for people that waited for the second game. "Rumour has it" is not enough, that's what i meant, they should be proud of ME, and instead of that now it's a Duke Nukem Forever. It could be released but with no news from it... And i did said that DICE wasn't as money sucking as Activision. Activision is WAY worse, with Elite, more DLCs and annual games. But i'll show why both are alike to me: you said "Fans wanted Vietnam and DICE obliged with BC2: Vietnam." but Vietnam expansion was paid, and it wasn't cheap, i know because i bought it, but then fans of CoD also asked more zombie maps and they also obliged. Paid expansion. And comparing THAT to Valve, The Passing DLC? Free. The Sacrifice DLC? Free. L4D1 maps? Free. Not even close to any other company now, is it?

@Raxyman Whether you like DICE or not is completely irrelevant when discussing whether they're good developers or not. You've misinterpreted what I've written, I didn't state most PS3 users own 1943, I stated most of the Battlefield fans on PS3 own 1943. Treyarch an IW are in a completely different boat, Activision are firmly at the helm of the studios, you only have to look at the DLC pricing and yearly releases to see that's true. West and Zampella have said as much too. 2 million's nice but it's considerably less then Battlefield sells, from their perspective it's easy to see why they focus on Battlefield, not to mention it's been their thing since 1997. First you query about ME, then "it's not enough", what do you want? DICE much like Valve, are focused on the fans as much as they are on the business side of things. PC gamers didn't want another port and they got it, the BETA testers were Battlefield 2 gamers. A lot the Indie games I've ever played are fun don't get me wrong but they get too much praise for what they actually are. Limbo for example is a great game but it's very short and heavily overpriced; other indie games get praised for being "deep" but from a gameplay standpoint they're simplistic and unrewarding. It's more of a nostalgia trip more often then not.

@MEDzZ3RO Sorry, BF may be a good game, but i still don't like DICE, besides, rumoured ME is not enough, and limited appeal? More than 2 million is not enough to them? And i've never heard about most PS3 users own BF 1943... To me Activision, IW/Treyarch, CoD, EA, DICE & BF are birds of the same feather, even though i can see that DICE is a less money-sucking than Activision. You're acting overly defensive on DICE, and i know you won't back down with anything i say, it's not that you're wrong, i'd do the same thing with Steam, but it's pointless go on any further. Lastly, about money, my point is, every company aims profit, nothing wrong there. But the games should be done aiming the gamers, not the money. Few companies got that nowadays, and most of them are indie developers...

Zumba still lurks near the bottom :/ I can see why as every girl I know who as a console in their house either has it or wants it. As much as I would love Battlefield to be higher in the list than Modern Warfare 3, I think the games ridiculous sales figure will fly it to the top. Here's hoping Skyrim will help beat it down a couple of places :D

Modern Warfare 3 has some serious pressure. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't make it in the top 3. We got some cracking games on this list. Good for Battlefield though I'm pretty sure it's only just managing to swat Uncharted out of the number 1.

@Raxyman Mirrors Edge has limited appeal and sales to match however DICE are working on at least two other projects, one is rumoured to be a Mirrors Edge 2. Most of the BF fans on PS3 already have 1943, for the most part it's an addition that wasn't particularly relevant. I don't know if it's true or not but PSN users are rumoured to get the DLC free of charge as compensation, son't quote me on it but I'm fairly certain I've read it someone. Either way mine's free anyway. Most of the bugs were minor, the server issues on PS3 at least have been patched. They like money (it is a business after all) but they do listen to the fans. DICE have regular patches, fans wanted a Desert Combat-esque game made and DICE hired the group behind the mod for Battlefield 2. Fans wanted Vietnam and DICE obliged with BC2: Vietnam. Not to mention the free battlelog service and array of free DLC for VIP members. I can think of many devs who are worse.

I don't get why cod fanboys hate BF i hate cod because its the same every year and don't see the point in buying it every year. But what did BF do to them? rival cod? is that there case? If anything cod fanboys should be happy there is another big shooter out there, that way maybe just maybe they will actually add something worth paying for in the cod series.

@MEDzZ3RO Listen to their fans? Two words for ya, Mirrors. Edge. Launching Battlefield does not mean they like their fans, means they like money ONLY. After all the game launch was hasty, tons of bugs were found and if weren't enough they backed on their word of granting Battlefield 1943 for PS3 users. Instead they gave you a week ahead of (paid) DLC. That's not very pleasant, at least to me. It's like saying IW is a good producer because of MW3. Games should be treated differently than their producers. BF3 can be a good game but that doesn't mean DICE is a good producer.

Ok, listen, as much as I hate to admit it, 'MW3' is going to blow EVER game away sales wise. It will continue to reign at the top of the charts until November 15 2012 when Grand Theft Auto V will debut at number 1. That, of course, is assuming IW / Activision doesn't release yet another 'COD' in the beginning of November.

I own and love BF3, but you'd be lying to yourself if you said they're aren't problems with it. Me and my buddy still will get put on opposite teams occasionally, both are ps3's locked up playing, and they're still little minor glitches and bugs. I am impressed they have been updating so much already, but some issues are really annoying. Also, we have to call each other and use bluetooth on our phones cause the ingame audio cuts out so bad. One hidden gem is the battlelog online. I absolutely love it and how you can keep track of friends and checkout and change your stuff right online

@superivanho BF3 had no chance of toppling MW3 ... I don't play any COD since COD4. I'm a battlefield fanboy from the 1942 days, but no one had any ideas of grandeur that bf3 was going to topple cod4 from at this point. Good thing sales don't equate 1:1 to a how fun and good a game is. BF3 all the way baby!

If EA/DICE can minimize the BF3 bugs before it comes out, it could have convinced people to get more copies and boost up the sales (and maybe much higher than MW3) . Sadly, they don't take the matter properly and that's a disaster. They've almost reached the goal, but failed at the final step. It's a shame really imo. p.s. I have both BF3 and MW3, bought both at a bargain price ;)

Number 1 on the charts is an amazing achievement, but I find it wierd that a lot of people weren't introduced to Battlefield until 3. I was introduced by BF2: Modern Combat, which I played way before my first COD game, World at War.

It's funny that it says in the article Forza 3 dropped one spot to seven then you look at the top ten list and it is actually Forza 4, that is a bit of a type-o. What ever it's good to see that Battlefield 3 is still doing so well.

@mad_krips Football is an over-hyped, over-payed panzees sport for people who cry when they trip over an eyelash. I've seen children react less. It's pathetic at best. As for the game, the yearly installments are unnecessary and not improved enough to warrant paying £40 for something that could be DLC. Want a real sport, try Rugby or UFC.

"Forza 3 drops 1 place down to 7"? Wow, that's impressive considering it's age..... ;) ha ha Seriously though, it's well deserved for Battlefield... it's a great game. I need Uncharted 3 in my life soon too.... I both hate and love christmas... too many great games, so little time
