Battlefront 2 Update Changes Hero-Unlocks Dramatically; Here's How Much Vader And Luke Cost

EA has made some changes.

[UPDATE] DICE executive producer John Wasilczyk released a statement on Battlefront II's controversial loot box/microtransaction system today. He explained that change will be a constant for Battlefront II as it pertains to changing the in-game economy, with tweaks coming as DICE considers and responds to player feedback. [Second update: Battlefront II microtransactions have now been removed entirely for the time being.]

Specifically, Wasilczyk said DICE is aware of the feedback that it takes too long to unlock heroes like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. "Unlocking a hero is a great accomplishment in the game, something we want players to have fun earning. We used data from the beta to help set those levels, but it’s clear that more changes were needed," he explained.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Battlefront 2 Update Changes Hero Prices Dramatically

In response to this, DICE is dropping the number of credits you need to unlock "top heroes" by 75 percent; Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader can now be unlocked at 15,000 credits, while Emperor Palpatine, Chewbacca, and Leia Organa can be unlocked at 10,000 credits. Iden Versio can be unlocked with 5,000 credits under the new system.

"Based on what we've seen in the trial, this amount will make earning these heroes an achievement, but one that will be accessible for all players," Wasilczyk said. "It's a big change, and it's one we can make quickly. It will be live today, with an update that is getting loaded into the game."

However, Wasilczyk made no mention of a refund for people who paid the higher values for the hero unlocks.

He went on to say that DICE is aware of the feedback on Reddit, and promised that the studio will continue to make changes to credit levels for unlocking heroes. There will be a Reddit AMA on Wednesday featuring leads from the development team where they will answer questions about the current state of the game.

The original story is below.

Star Wars: Battlefront II has been generating controversy for a while already regarding its loot box and microtransaction system, and the game isn't even fully released yet. That controversy continues now that the game is out in EA/Origin Access, with players complaining about how the game allows you to essentially pay for the chance to get better items that actually affect your in-game performance.

In response to this, EA released a statement on Reddit--and it didn't go well, reportedly becoming the most-downvoted comment in the history of Reddit with more than 433,000 downvotes. The statement explains that EA is trying to "provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes."

It adds that EA determined the in-game credit cost of heroes based on data from the open beta and more. You can expect EA to continue to change the credit cost of heroes going forward. "We'll be making constant adjustments to ensure that players have challenges that are compelling, rewarding, and of course attainable via gameplay," EA said.

"We appreciate the candid feedback, and the passion the community has put forth around the current topics here on Reddit, our forums and across numerous social media outlets. Our team will continue to make changes and monitor community feedback and update everyone as soon and as often as we can."

Community manager Mat Everett added in a statement of his own on Twitter that further changes to Battlefront II's loot box system will be announced via a blog post soon.

For lots more on the current state of Battlefront II's loot box system and why we think it's problematic, check out the video above. In it, we provide a comprehensive breakdown of the different currencies, what kind of items and Star Cards are available, and what $90 (or $100, if you don't have the EA/Origin Access discount) puts in your hands. It's a complex system, but one you'll likely want to understand before diving into the game--or deciding whether it's worth a purchase.

During an earnings call recently, EA CEO Andrew Wilson suggested that the players voicing concerns about Battlefront II's loot boxes are a vocal minority. He said the general feedback around the game--covering its campaign, multiplayer, and more--has been "very, very positive."

"There was the conversation around loot boxes, which is not a Star Wars: Battlefront II-specific conversation but more one that the industry is having with players across the global community," he explained. "And we are engaged in that conversation, engaging with our players on a daily basis as we think about that."

EA developers have received death threats in the wake of Battlefront II's loot box and microtransaction controversy.

Battlefront II officially releases on November 17. The EA/Origin Access trial provides the full multiplayer component and the first three single-player missions, though you're limited to a total of 10 hours of gameplay. Pre-ordering the Deluxe edition gets you complete access on November 14. You can read more in our Battlefront II multiplayer pre-review.

WOW!, EA's dialogue at the earnings call was incredibly insulting: "EA CEO Andrew Wilson suggested that the players voicing concerns about Battlefront II's loot boxes are a vocal minority."... I suspect that the VOCAL MINORITY as they suggest! are the hardcore/Youtubers/reviewers who actually drive a lot of the decisions within the community. Maybe some of EA's investors need to go online and look at the backlash they are receiving. At this point the only reason that EA do well is because they have the money to licence the biggest IP's and invest in marketing. EA (and the whole gaming industry) need to be really careful, micro-transactions could cause the industry bubble to burst and then we will be left with nothing.

These large businesses rely on huge revenues to ensure that they can keep trading and if the cost of entry to gaming becomes substantial then consumer uptake will fall off and EA's bottom line will be effected. Also their aren't going to be any more exciting console releases (as it appears that Sony and MS are going to a new iteration model and moving away from the new architecture) in the future which will negatively effect EA's potential to earn... Why would anyone buy FIFA 22 when they already own FIFA 19/20/21 on the same machine? (this is a rhetorical question). As a non-industry person it appears that EA is only really publishing £50 DLCs and full price games that offer less than mobile phone gaming platforms.

Sony and Microsoft need to step in and take control of this situation! EA has been dictating the video game market for too long and clearly as a business they are happy to take the punches from their core customers as the mainstream don't generally read the gaming news. However due to the efforts of the so called VOCAL MINORITY this Battlefront 2 micro-transactions/gambling has been reported in most major news outlets which appears to have been incredibly effective so far!

I know this sounds like a rant, but it really isnt. We are quickly approaching a technical plateau, 4k and VR are already here and realistically the technological entry point to mainstream 8K gaming is a decade away, so whats new to keep the casual video gamer shopping in 3 years time . As core gamers we are all incredibly lucky to have so many choices, but WE all rely on casuals to keep pumping their money into the market. If we lose the casuals due to the overly complicated money spinning scams [that are being conducted by all the major publishers] then we will lose a majority of the indies and/or the big companies will consolidate and we will have even less choice and even worse business practices.

I hope this all makes sense! Its really really important that as consumers we keep these big publishers balanced through friendly protesting. The relationship between a business and its customer base should be one of partnership and communication. Currently EA are the equivalent of an Italian restaurant that gives you a tin of tomatoes when you ordered a Spaghetti Bolognese and then acting shocked when they get a complaint!

And... if you dont care about any of the above, then that is absolutely fine your probably just one of the MUTED MAJORITY lol!

Man, these guys are funny. Fucking marketing idiots. "The statement explains that EA is trying to "provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes.""

Yeah, I bet people feel totally accomplished when they've finally unlocked something after dozens of hours that others got from the start by paying some real money. No matter what new ideas they introduce to milk people further they'll always come up with some retarded statement to make it sound like it's actually beneficial to their players.

"You should be glad that there are microtransactions, it provides you with a bigger challenge by putting you at a disadvantage against all those asshats that don't know what to do with their money."

Luke and Vader could be free or cost 2000 bucks to unlock. I wouldn't play the game either way.

But let's watch millions of gamers purchase this piece of crap so we can have an even crappier game to look forward to.

I hope Dice gets shut down honestly. Then EA will have no developers to create their games. Maybe EA will move onto other things. Plus why doesn't Dice break away from EA and start their own company? They don't need EA.

@warrior1718: A fully-owned developer cannot "just break away." Most top talent are sandbagged by non-compete and non-recruit clauses these days, and the DICE name is dead in all outcomes.

@warrior1718: Wrong. Pyrosa is partly correct; and I know this from personal experience. When developers leave a company like DICE; they rarely get to choose where they can go or even what they can work on next. This is because the agreements they are made to sign are very restrictive.

For example, when I left the game company I worked for for more than 10 years; I was made to sign an agreement that limits me from discussing things like the games I worked on, which company I actually worked for, and other things like where I can go to work or what types of games I can work on in the future. Is this legal? Kinda... but to challenge it would take years and millions of dollars because they can and will litigate me into the ground. It's either sign or not get paid for the time I was with them; the end.

Not saying it can't happen; is has: the guys at Respawn are the perfect example. But it's very rare and you usually need the backing of another powerful entity to pull it off; a luxury the great majority just don't have. Most just find something else to do and get out of the industry completely.

So, you can buy loot boxes to upgrade your character, ... or with the same money buy characters but while saving for those characters, you are unable to buy anything else (if you want to save) and thus don't progress your level? Sooo much fun.

@Phazevariance: Too much emphasis is placed on these characters, you will spend the vast majority of your time playing as the rank and file soldiers. Better to focus on upgrading those than worrying about some characters you might not even get a chance to play as in every match

I don't even see them as loot boxes, where I can choose what I want, after I've earnt it. Its a slot machine, that you can put real money into, if you want. Its gambling to me(IF you choose to spend money on it). Nothing more, nothing less. Because its a slot machine. This system should have a warning on the box, with gambling disclaimer on it.

@ltjohnnyrico: the definition of gambling is using money in a game if chance. Loot boxes is a game Of chance, using REAL money. The slot machine analogy comes from, YOU spend money and the loot box Is Totally randomized And the outcome is pure chance. Granted there's probably some kind of percentage system, depending on how long you play (like a real slit machine lol) but its still a form of gambling.

@nyran125tk: Its no more Gambling than trading Cards and I can't see those getting the same treatment anytime soon ... yeah there is a chance you will get cards you already had etc so the pack will have less value, but you always get something .. its not like a game of Roulette where you can come away with nothing !

Otherwise we can say that just about everything in life is a Game of Chance .. every time I step in my car and go for a drive there is a chance I could be involved in an accident .. etc .. etc

@nyran125tk: Clearly you've never played a real slot machine. Most pulls, you put money in but nothing comes out.

With loot boxes, SOMETHING always comes out, even if it's multiple servings of crap.

The solution is simply to never buy them for any reason. The VPs track metrics DAILY, and nothing speaks louder than an inital sale that results in zero add'l dollars after that initial sale. Yes, that speaks even louder than a no-sale, since there's no information subsequent to no-sales.

I feel bad for the developer leads who are gonna be on that AMA. They're mostly likely just doing their jobs at the direction of EA and are gonna get grilled for stuff they likely do not have any control over. How nice of EA to not actually send out someone who has the power to make decisions. There are 100's of people who have worked really hard to make this game happen. It's sad to see EA mess it up so badly. These people will never see a dime of the microtransaction money, they might get a bonus if it passes a sales milestone of copies sold.

Why do you not cover the credits earned as well Gamespot? They reduced the credits earned by 75%

As of now you are playing right in to EA's hands by covering their "change" which wasn't really a change, unless you call 1.5% reduction being a worthy an article. Please do some research next time. This game is cancer to the gaming community, charging people money after paying the full price for the game is ludicrous.

@Bhemont: I thought the point was that, when you finish the campaign, you'll have enough to get the main character from it as your first hero in multiplayer. And since her cost went down by 75% so did the reward for beating the campaign.

@Bhemont: That's not true, they reduced the campaing reward by 75%. Cause Iden used to be 20 000 credits. Now with the reduction she costs 5000 credits. Meaning finishing the campaing leaves you enough credits to unlock her OR keep the 5000 for another character. Online credits earned stayed the same... I gained about 10K just by playing online for a couple of hours.

So when will they start axing the jobs for the EA higher ups who thought this was a good idea? I mean you cant reward stupidity if anything theyll get pay bumps. They stuffed up the need for speed games and now this. Im still surprised how the Capcom guys still have a job for SFV. It seems that if they make a bad game or stupid brain dead decisions to milk the fanbase who clearly state we wont support this get a pat on the back and keep the job. Do this in an everyday job and your out the door for blunder this obvious. So where is the petition asking for them to be axed? Where is that reddit post to get another more thumbs up response this time to get rid of the head honchos

I hate this but my guess is that it makes a fortune and nothing is changed. Star Wars is too big to fail and this will be a massive money maker for EA. Even when people buy it on sale for $20, they will still buy loot crates.
