Best Mobile Controller For iPhone And Android Gaming In 2024

The best controller options for turning your smartphone into a portable gaming system.

It's time for us all to admit it: smartphones are actually pretty good gaming devices. The latest flagship iPhones and Android devices are more powerful than ever, sporting hardware strong enough to play console-quality games like Genshin Impact, Minecraft, and Fortnite with surprising visual fidelity, and many cloud streaming and remote play apps now let you play your Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox libraries while on the go, too. And since most of us already own a smartphone, it's easy to give the latest mobile gaming experience a try. However, before you go loading up Apple Arcade or Game Pass Ultimate cloud streaming, you'll want to complete your Android or iPhone gaming setup with a reliable smartphone controller. Otherwise, you'll be stuck trying to play games with touch controls--and while that's fine for games designed for touchscreens, it's not ideal for console games.

Thankfully, there are now many excellent smartphone controllers on the market that can fit a variety of mobile gaming setups. In fact, you probably already own a great controller that'll work with your phone. Still, you may want to consider a mobile controller that's specifically designed for gaming on a phone, such as the many excellent grip-style phone case controllers that turn your Android or iOS device into an all-in-one gaming handheld.

To help you find the right mobile gamepad for you, we compiled this list of the best smartphone controllers in 2024. You'll find options that are compatible with Android and iOS that come in a variety of form factors and connection types, and sport unique special features like extra programmable buttons, headphone jacks, companion apps, and more.If you're looking for even more controller recommendations, be sure to check our lists of the best controllers for PS5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.

I was recently looking into this for controls that'd work for my Samsung Fold 4 phone, which has some unique requirements being so tall once it's unfolded. Unfortunately, there's no good usb-direct-connect version of the 'switch like' side by side controls (like Backbone style controls, see above) that'd fit my Fold 4 decently. All the ones that work well with Fold4 are Bluetooth connect.

Anyway, my favorite contender at this point is: "RIG Nacon MG-X PRO for Android". Which it looks like it just went out of stock on Amazon. Only see used for sale now. New ones will probably come back in stock soon. There's some youtube reviews of it out there.

The "PowerA Moga XP7-X Plus" mentioned in the article above was my second-choice pick, if the RIG Nacon one didn't work out.

@christophersays: I have the one they mention here (it was only 37 on Amazon for a while, didnt even know I was getting a deal at first) and its really well made. About equal to Xbox quality. I needed one where I didnt have to worry about passthrough, and one I could use if I just want to put my phone by my tv on hdmi, and play wirelessly. If you go on trips, this has a serious integrated power bank that can charge anything, with full size USB port too so no adapters.

Imo its the best overall controller... even for something like PC its great. If you need access to usb and its on the bottom or top, there is no solid answer on side attaching controller considering some phones have hdmi.

Razer's always best. For about three months. Then it breaks. Please be a bit more forthright about that aspect of their products. They're good until they literally fall apart after a few months of extended use, and this is very well known.

Best phone controller I've used so far is my DS4 with a mounting bracket for my phone. If I could connect an XBox 360 controller to my phone, that would take the number one spot, but I can't, so the DS4 will just have to do (oh damn).

I have also used a few others, rather liked the IPEGA Red Knight until it finally gave up the ghost, but my DS4 so far has had the best longevity and ergonomics.

Buy a $10 clip and use your existing Xbox controller. There's ALWAYS one in my laptop bag. The controller immediately pairs with my laptop gaming PC, Android phone, and back to Xbox.

Just don't bash the bumpers inside your laptop bag while traveling. They're the most fragile part.

Keep a Q-tip and individually-sealed alcohol wipe handy in case bag-junk gets down into the stick tracking.

I don’t remember what it was, but I had one of these mobile controllers for my Note 3 back in the day, mainly used for the emulators and roms I had on it for retro gaming…I remember I was running Dreamcast off of my Note 3 and it ran quite well too.

I use a cheap $20 iPega 9067 (Red Knight), and it serves me perfectly fine for mobile gaming and phone emulators, etc. It's basically just a telescopic bluetooth controller that you strap your phone in to, and turns it in to a Switch. Never had any issues with latency, drift or unresponsive analogs; it gets the job done. Either that or the Saitake 7007x are really good if you want a cheap $20 telescopic controller for your phone.

i rather used a standard controller instead of those "switch" like joy cons, because i feel more comfortable with them than those joy-con like controller size.

if now i could find a wii u pro controller to my lg g6 phone, then i'll be fine playing a mobile game that have controller support with a 3rd party usb adapter compatible with android mobiles with a usb otg type c adapter.

edit

these wireless usb adapters with a otg usb adapter will do:

https://www.8bitdo.com/wireless-usb-adapter-2/

https://www.8bitdo.com/wireless-usb-adapter/

doesn't work for game like cod mobile that uses bluetooth only.

If you're gonna recommend the standard Xbox One controller, should point out that it has to be a newer one, from after they updated it alongside the One S in 2016. Xbox One controllers from before then don't have Bluetooth and thus can't connect to phones.

Mat/GameSpot,

Can you advise if any of these controllers make significantly less sound than the standard X1 controller? I ask because a part of gaming-on-the-go means you'll be playing in places other than your standard gaming area. For example, I love to play at night when the Mrs. is asleep next to me or on a crowded bus/train, BUT I can't or otherwise feel guilty because the X-1 controller is so LOUD. Every button press and the analog stick knocking against the sides sounds like an old arcade box. I understand there will be some noise, but I would LOVE a controller that has more silent buttons. Thanks in advance for any advice!
