It's been more than 20 years since Microsoft made its foray into console gaming with the Xbox. Many of the most popular Xbox franchises today--including Halo and Forza--made their debut on the rather large black box. Though a bunch of original Xbox games are hard to get a hold of nowadays, some of the best original Xbox games are available to download from the Microsoft Store or can be found on mobile devices, PC, and even modern consoles. We've rounded up the 20 best Xbox games (in alphabetical order). Round of applause for the gamers who played these games with the "Duke" controller.

For newer Xbox experiences, check out our roundups of the best Xbox One games and best Xbox Series X games to play right now.

Halo Combat Evolved is undoubtedly the best game to ever release on the OG Xbox and undoubtedly one of the Greatest games of all time.

There are other games that could have been here too but this is a very good list that represents the original Xbox. A few I would mention not here are.. Beyond Good & Evil ( though not an Xbox exclusive ) and Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. I still have my original Xbox (Halo Special Edition)...may just have to fire it up again since I own most of these game.

As far as Time Splitters games go, Future Perfect was by far the best.

Morrowind, while an achievement, does not belong on this list when you can play it on just about any PC now. Load times are effing horrendous (2 1/2 mins to load a save game), and it was unstable AF.

That said, Game of the Year does. It might be limited release (it went out of print shortly after it was released), but it fixes most of the problems (except the save load times) and comes with all of the expansions.

DOA3 was also an incredible 3D fighter, and should be on this list as well.

List is missing:

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II or Champions of Norrath. Basically the same game by the same team but one is DnD and the other is a Everquest spinoff. Best console only Diablo-like's ever.

Panzer Dragoon Orta

Marvel vs Capcom 2, or hell Soul Calibur 2, need to have a fighting game on there.

SSX3 is flat out better then Tricky, just takes the same characters and gameplay but better graphics, physics, and an open world mountain environment that serves as a hub between events, or just an epic super long free-style course.

I would also personally put Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and Crimson Skies on the list, but those are like less then guaranteed locks like the other ones I listed above.

@CashPrizes: I picked up a copy of Panzer Dragoon Orta before I had a console to play it. Granted, it was $5 on eBay because it was about a decade later, but the demo of it that I played one time in a Best Buy in the early '00s left that strong of an impression.

Sadly, the game didn't quite live up to that impression when I played it. It was a solid game and well worth the time and money I spent, but I beat it in a single sitting and remember feeling distinctly relieved that I was done with it because it had overstayed its welcome. Of course, I was also coming at it as someone used to the affordances in game mechanics and design that had become typical in the decade-plus since its launch, so I wasn't even capable of giving it a fair shake. I came in with biases that I couldn't do anything about.

It was a fun game, and I'd bet good money that it was even more fun in its time, but I do question how well it actually holds up.

@aichon: I remember playing PDO when it was first released and really loved it, it was one of my favorite games....because it's been a long time since I last played it, you may be right about it not possibly holding up over time...I still have the game and might give it another go after reading your post.

Jer Set Radio Future could have been the only thing on this list, and it'd still be reason enough to get an XBOX

@skyhighgam3r: It's literally the reason I still have one. Kinda.

There's a long story here that no one cares about (trust me, I typed it up and even I found it boring), but the punchline is that I still have an Xbox 360 hooked up to my TV specifically so that I can play JSRF. Literally no other reason. I plan to sell my 360 once I beat JSRF because it will have exhausted its sole use. Sadly, this has all been true for about the last decade, but one day I will play it and that console will no longer sit in silent judgment over me.

@aichon: You can play it on your PC with Xemu or CXBX too. I wish they'd add it to the Backwards Compatible list already though for the new Xbox though.

The Xbox 360 remaster of Jet Set/Grind Radio is great too. That one at least works on the new Xbox.

@aichon: Get it through GamePass. I can’t see why GamePass wouldn’t have it, if the apparent value of GamePass is to be believed. It’s bound to be on there. Probably hundreds of old games on there we don’t know about. It can’t all be hyperbole. The service is guaranteed to have it, surely.

@bloodbornelore: Jet Set Radio Future isn't on anything but Original XBOX. Even the X360 ver. Uses the XBOX disc.
