Bethesda Boss Gives Update On Starfield In Microsoft-Bethesda Briefing

Ashley Cheng of Bethesda Game Studios says the team working on Starfield is uniquely positioned to succeed.

Bethesda Game Studios managing director Ashley Cheng has shared a little bit of information on the development practices behind Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI. We still don't know much about the games, but we do know they'll both fall under the broad "open-world RPG" umbrella Bethesda is known for.

During the Bethesda-Microsoft briefing, Cheng said the team working on Starfield is uniquely positioned to succeed because the developers themselves have worked together for years on other open-world RPGs in the Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises.

Now Playing: Starfield - Official Announcement Trailer | E3 2018

"Today, the team working on Starfield have all worked on several open-world RPGs together. This shared experience and chemistry doesn't happen overnight. It takes a long time and it's a lot of hard work," Cheng said.

Cheng didn't mention The Elder Scrolls VI by name, but the game's logo flashed on-screen when Cheng spoke about the upcoming games from Bethesda Game Studios.

"As we work on our next-generation of games, I can think of no better place to be than here at Xbox. No matter how crazy the idea, the team at Xbox always says yes, 'Let's try it.'"

Release dates for Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI have not been announced yet, but Starfield will come first, and then The Elder Scrolls VI, according to the current schedule. They are presumably being developed for next-gen hardware and PC.

Also during the event, Cheng said Microsoft has "always been a great partner" for Bethesda Game Studios, going back to the days of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, which launched as a console exclusive for Xbox.

"Xbox has been a great partner; always ready to help solve problems, like figuring out how to optimize performance and push the hardware as much as we can," Cheng said.

The roundtable interview between Microsoft and Bethesda also offered some new insight on future games from Bethesda. Xbox boss Phil Spencer said games will release on any platform that has Xbox Game Pass, which cuts out PlayStation and other competing consoles, though arrangements that are already in place will remain intact, so Deathloop will still be a timed console exclusive on PS5. It will likely come to other platforms after a year.

We also learned that a whopping 20 back-catalog Bethesda games are headed to Game Pass today March 12, including Skyrim and many others.

Finally, Microsoft and Bethesda said they will have major updates to share on their future pipelines during an event sometime in the summer.

@mogan: Because MS kept changing their minds on what they wanted. Clearly MS treats certain devs better than others, so a big fish like Bethesda would get preferential treatment.

@Barighm: Where did you get that MS changed their minds on what they wanted?? As far as I know Scalebound was cancelled because it wasn't looking to turn out very well.

@Barighm: I imagine that'll depend on the project and whether MS thinks it'll make money or not. Bethesda Softworks, the main studio, will probably be given a blank check to make mainline Fallout and Elder Scrolls, but I'll bet folks like Tango Gameworks probably have a little more oversite.

I'm not an Xbox fanboy, the only Xbox I've ever owned was a 360 so I could play Lost Odyssey. I've been a Playstation guy since PS1 and every so often get a Nintendo. BUT I think this is a good thing to be honest because Playstation needs competition and one of the reasons Xbox falls behind PS is due to the lack of exclusives and first party games.

I mean look at what Playstation are charging for games now £70!! (over $90 USD) It's astonishing and they can kiss my ***. Imagine if Xbox disappeared and it was just Playstation. They'd take us for an absolute ride, way more than they already are.

It actually makes me laugh when you see people throwing shade at Xbox for "monopolising", when Sony's been doing exclusivity **** for years. Just look at FF7R and the new Intergrade DLC; a DLC for a PS4 only game is being locked to the PS5 in order to sell PS5s... which you can't even buy from stores. I mean talk about BS practises which is CLEARLY a Playstation instruction.

I actually want another company to join the competition and go head to head with Sony/Microsoft because it's becoming so anti-consumer.

@tidus_ff: I've seen every major PS5 game reduced to about $50 (Can) at some point in the last few months. Just develop some patience if you can't afford it.

MS did Tomb Raider exclusivity. MS is no better.

"I actually want another company to join the competition and go head to head with Sony/Microsoft"

You've heard of Nintendo, right? And Epic? And Steam?

@Barighm: Wow.

I'm going to assume you're a child because there's basic comprehension problems you've demonstrated here. Though it is nice to see that you've edited the part where you tell me to "get out of here with that ****" in regard to £70 = $90+.

I was going to reply to each "point" you've made but I can't be bothered because of how much of a waste of time it is.

I recommend stepping back from brand loyalty. It's not doing you or anyone any favours.

I honestly can't even stomach the idea of buying Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Doom, Wolfenstein, etc on PlayStation. Like, sucks for people who prefer PlayStation I guess, but it's just business as usual from where I stand.

they said wherever Xbox Games Pass is on... but they didn't say it will only be on those platforms and if they will be timed exclusive like Deathloop/Ghostwire is for PS5. either way, they will be losing out on sales as the majority of people who play games are on PlayStation and PC with a rising amount on the Nintendo Switch... That Said... Starfield is at least 3+ years away and Elder Scrolls even longer. so right now, anything can happen between that.

@Spiritbomb2012: Sony has a TON of exclusive games, they can afford to lose a few to MS. Also, Gamepass is available on PC, so they're not losing that business either.

@Spiritbomb2012: While there is a lot of money to be had on other platforms, MS is the one company that can afford to lose it and it's well inline with their operating history. A lot of people around here were surprised to see it happen, but I doubt there were many of us who actually believed they would never do it.

@Spiritbomb2012: We should all take a step back and look at the situation with at least a bit of objectivity -- given the history and position of Microsoft XBox up to this point, the moves made by Spencer since he has been at the helm, and Sony's exclusive and timed-exclusive love affair...Why would Microsoft ever put Starfield or ES6 on Playstation? Timed-exclusive or otherwise? Does that truly seem likely to anyone?

XBox is already losing two of its own Bethesda games to Sony T.E. right out of the gates (not sure if the PC releases will be on Game Pass). The idea that they would hand over the big guns to a competitor? You don't spend $7.5 billion to do...almost exactly what had been going on for a decade. Sony spent a measly half a billion and bought up a dozen or so timed exclusives, including Deathloop and Ghostwire.

As for losing sales, for not releasing on PS and Switch...no. Microsoft bought Zenimax and the 15 previous studios to bolster their ecosystem -- XBox, Game Pass/XCloud, and PC digital stores. You could make the same argument that Sony and Nintendo are not maximizing games sales by keeping titles exclusive to native consoles. Sony is only now entertaining PC releases on older titles, as they don't have the capital or the multiple audiences that Microsoft has served for decades.

@Spiritbomb2012: Xbox isn't going to lose sales.
Xbox wasn't making money when Elder Scrolls V sold on PlayStation 4.
Xbox now will be making money when Elder Scrolls VI sells on Xbox X|S.
Xbox is not losing money in this situation.

@Spiritbomb2012: From what Phil said I would not hold out hope for any Bethesda games that dont already have a contract to show up on anything but Xbox and PC and Xcloud. I also think Starfield is way closer than you think.

@doomsdayhell01: I think the original plan was this holiday however with Covid and the recent acquisition they may get more time. Since it will be on game pass however there is not much incentive to target a holiday release anymore. Before game pass I would have said if they delay it they delay to next holiday 2022 , but now there is no reason not to shoot for spring or really any other date.

Here's what's funny, it's absolutely hilarious... Phil took Xbox 3rd party and confirmed it on stage at E3 in 2017. This is a fact, it's easily researched. He confirmed that he wanted to focus on more screens and made it clear he didn't care about selling boxes. The last Xbox exclusive was Halo 5 in 2015, another fact, and there hasn't been one since, yet a 3rd fact. This is the funny part though; all this announcement did was reconfirm what he said in 2017 about transitioning to a 3rd party.

These games will come to any PLATFORMS, meaning more than one (exclusive means one, no matter how you try to change it by say like adding 'console' in front of it) where Gamepass is available. So on day one these games will all launch on no less than 5 individual, separate platforms. No the "ecosystem" doesn't mean a thing, I've been in each of the Big 3's ecosystems since the beginning and each one until now always had valuable exclusives making them worthy purchases.

So for any real gamer, if you want exclusives today you go to Playstation and Nintendo. If you want power, full BC, and forward compatibility you go PC, and if you want to continue burying your head in the sand and ignoring real facts stay with the industry laughingstock, Xbox.

For the record, I own 2 of each console every gen, my 2nd PS5 is arriving tomorrow, and Xbox still hasn't given any reason up through 2023 to buy in yet. Real gamers need real reasons to invest, and from a gamers perspective, Xbox has failed for the last time. Also, incredibly proud to be one of the smart ones NOT supporting anti-consumer services like Gamepass!

@reznik00: You have lost your mind. Game Pass is an amazing service adding roughly 1 million users a month. Ecosystem is important if you are on Game Pass MS does not care what hardware you use. Exclusives are stupid, I dont have to buy a certain blu ray player to play certain movies , or music or books. If Phil could he would put Game Pass on Playstation and Nintendo. And Playstation and Nintendo should develop their own services and do the same.

@jeremyalexander: I disagree Bethesda did all that stuff with 76 cause they needed the money. They dont have to worry about that anymore.
