Bethesda Is Changing The Way You Pickpocket In Starfield

Make sure to upgrade your stealth tree.

Stealth-based characters in Bethesda's space RPG Starfield will have to be a little more careful than they were in the developer's previous games. Whenever you decide to pickpocket someone, the game will no longer pause like it did in Fallout or Skyrim. Instead, it'll play out in real time, and you'll have to stay near them as you're doing it.

Thanks to a video posted by Reddit user OkPain2022, we're given a glimpse of how pickpocketing will work. Of course, you'll still need to approach them by crouching, and after you do that, a prompt will appear, allowing you to steal from them. After that, another menu will appear, showing you what they have and the odds of you successfully stealing said items.

Some fans wondered if the same rule would apply to lock-picking."I wonder if lock picking will be the same way. It is in dying light and adds a considerable amount of anxiety while trying to lock pick with baddies nearby," one user said. Others joked about how they no longer have time to do real-world tasks by saying, "No more putting on the kettle while I mull over what to steal huh…"

It's also worth pointing out that this isn't the first time Bethesda has made a feature play out in real time. In Fallout 3 and New Vegas, the game would pause whenever you decided to loot something. But in Fallout 4, that was no longer the case. Whenever you looted, everything around you would still be moving as it normally would.

I will play this game...in late 2024. Too many games to play with Game Pass and besides it's likely to be buggy for months after its release, if the trend of AAA games is to be followed.

@gamespotter_198: Supposedly it's their most stable game to date, which isn't a very high bar, but I figure it should be more than playable at launch. Even Skyrim despite all its bugs was playable.

@Barighm: which is good, and exactly why bethesda allows mod: they build their intended way of playing and then let the gamers do what they want.

Probably why it got delayed. Was all ready to go until that one guy (there is always that one guy) was all "Pickpocketing....we need to improve pickpocketing....."

@olddadgamer: it will be like EVERY other Bethesda game, broken, glitchy and barely playable and expect the modding community to fix it for years and then release a " goty" edition 5 years later.

@mogan: You're right, it doesn't have that groundbreaking ability. How shallow of me not to realize such an innovative thing, nowwwww the game will be good.

@mediastupid1: Well, I don't think including real-time pickpocketing is going to make Starfield bad. Certainly not the "wish.com version" of a game that doesn't involve pickpocketing at all.

@mediastupid1: If you want to have dumb fanboy fights, go to the System Wars forum; not the comments.

@mogan: I love how biased the " moderators" are on this forum. Don't agree with the topic or your opinion differs from ours. You're being a fanboy and we will block you or delete you comment. Very maturally done! Bravo!

@mediastupid1: I don't care if you think Redfall is great or terrible, but bringing it up for no reason other than to bag on Xbox IS being a fanboy. We've got a forum for that kind of thing but this isn't it.

And your other comment got deleted because you decided to make this political for some reason. If you've got a problem with moderation, please PM the mod team. The comments aren't the place to discuss that.

@mediastupid1: your comment has already aged like vinegar with milk. It's been only 11 hours. Imagine after the game release.
