Big in Japan August 15-21: Rhythm Heaven

Oddball rhythm game climbs back to top spot, dethroning Monster Hunter and Pokemon spin-offs; 3DS still in hardware pole position.

Update: We've corrected the hardware sales numbers at the bottom of the article, as the PS3 numbers were not stated. We apologize for this mistake.

While still in the top 10, both the Monster Hunter and Pokemon spin-offs took a small step down for the week of August 15-21 from the prior week's Media Create chart to make way for an old musical friend.

Monster Hunter Diary Poka Poka Felyne Village G finished the week at second place with 40,997 units sold, while Super Pokemon Rumble landed at fifth place with 32,144 units sold. Pushing them aside was the resurgent Rhythm Heaven on the Wii, which climbed back up to the number one spot with 48,190 units sold.

Multiple new titles also debuted on the top 10 list for the week. Compile Heart's RPG Hyperdimension Neptunia MK-II, the sequel to the much-maligned Hyperdimension Neptunia, finished at fourth place with 32,751 units sold.

Additionally, the PSP upgraded port of Growlanser IV, subtitled "Over Reloaded," made its mark at sixth place on the charts with 21,896 units sold. This version of the fourth game stars a mercenary named Crevaniel as he gets tangled up in a war between four countries and a prophecy carried out by a vengeful seraphim. The port will feature new story paths and new characters for fans to muck around with.

After its recent price cut, the 3DS continued its stay in first place on the hardware side of the charts. Nintendo's portable console sold 105,639 units for the week, while Sony's PSP and PS3 sold 40,888 and 29,666 units respectively. Meanwhile, the Wii continued to hold fourth place with 18,256 units sold.

Hyperdimension Neptunia really isnt a game that work for most reviewers... i played some and wondered what they complained about... however what doesnt work for na sells alot in japan - think its a matter of different kind of humour as a european i prefer very japanease games over western btw why is the psp just named psp - like is that psp 3000? i mean they put all ds versions up so why only psp and pspgo? - would be kinda a faulty list if psp means all the first 3 versions of psp since they didnt do that with the ds

@packtop I can not agree more, Nintendo is amazing and I have always loved their work. Although, it's a really good thing that they added the PS3 sales on the chart too, I was wondering why it was missing.

@superxtreme101 Nintendo is far from trouble seriously just take the 5 most sold game on the WII and it probably outsold the 10 best games of both the PS3 and 360 and i'm not talking about game bundled with the WII. Nintendo have a few games who sold over 20M, PS3 and 360 don't have any and the only game over 10m is black ops on the 360. And for handheld the best sold game for the DS is New super mario bros with over 25M and for the PSP it's Monsters hunter portable 3 with almost 5M. Also selling so much games only prove how much DS and WII they have sold which i'm sure also far outsold any other consoles and handhelds.

Now that's impressive still selling over 100k 1 week after the price drop. But 3DS really need some good game or sales will slowly go back to the way it was before the price drop.

@superxtreme101 Man, what is this? First of all, GameSpot miss to put a console in the game, you didn't notice because you are just blind by your fanboyism. Second, most of =/= half. There are only 5 games on a Nintendo console, that's quite different from "most of".

Wow. At this rate, in a one month period of the price drop and the release of Star Fox 64, the 3DS could sell 500,000.

The PS3 is the console that sold 29,666 units. The WII sold 18,256 contrary to the Hardware listing.

3DS sales > Everything else combined ...... Again And most of the top ten best selling games are on a Nintendo console and yet you people think Nintendo is in trouble *sigh*. Is that really what you want to believe? It's fine by me everybody has the right to think whatever he or she wants but hey it doesn't mean your right

PSP Go went up from 0 last week, which disappoints me. Ah well. :P Numbers are interesting, at least, as are the titles. Though I must point out, PS3 was accidentally left off of the hardware list.

I love how some of these games could pass for a dream you have after eating something spicy. Don't get me wrong, they can be really fun, but a mandrill throwing golf balls at you? Sounds like eating chili before bedtime... :D

I always enjoy these Japanese sales charts. It's fun to see a market where bonkers games like Rhythm Heaven and Hyperdimension Neptunia can be top sellers, instead of here in the States, where it's the same old crap every month.
