Big in Japan August 2-8: Tales of Phantasia

Namco Bandai's turn-based strategy RPG unseats Sengoku Basara 3 in debut week; PSP, PS3 rule hardware charts.

Sengoku Basara 3 has proven to be better at toppling regimes than holding onto them. Into its second week on Media Create's weekly sales chart, Capcom's historically based beat-'em-up was unseated from the top position by Namco Bandai's latest installment in the Tales of Phantasia series, Narikiri Dungeon X, which debuted to 108,356 units sold.

Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon X began as a Game Boy Color title.
Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon X began as a Game Boy Color title.

In fact, Sengoku Basara 3 for the PlayStation 3 fell to third during the week of August 2-8, slipping behind Wii Party's 82,698-unit tally with 57,021 copies sold during the period. Adding in the eighth-place Wii edition's 15,387 units, the game sold a total of 72,408 copies.

A remake of the 2000 Game Boy Color title of the same name, Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon X wasn't the only new debut on Media Create's chart. Scoring a fifth place finish was D3 Publisher's StormLover for the PSP. Two DS debuts from Namco Bandai rounded out the chart, as Battle Spirits: Digital Starter and Heart Catch PreCure! Oshare Collection sold 15,338 units and 15,091 units, respectively.

Sony maintained a firm hold on the Japanese hardware charts during the week, as the PSP topped handhelds with 30,397 units and the PS3 bested other consoles with 28,630 units sold. Nintendo's systems fell in line behind the PS3 and PSP, as the DSi LL and DSi combined to sell more than 39,000 units and the Wii shifted 18,238 systems. Microsoft's Xbox 360 took up its customary place at the bottom of the console sales chart with 5,639 units sold.

@Yajarobi LoL. X^D good excuse for Wii, but not for 360. there's a VAST difference in sales between Wii and 360, so sales slowing for 360 is questionable. LoL. but on a serious note... how much more people can POSSIBLY buy a Wii for crying out loud. X^D

Meh, the games will generally stay exclusive to their console. And a lot of the reasons they're not released over here are partly because Japan likes pretty much all decent RPG's, and it's not really the case in America. But yeah, stuff like that I guess, ha. Anyway, I'm a big fan of the Tales series :D

The reason why those games won't come to America is because they don't think the games will sell good.

@koushin thats exactly right. According to some study i read a few years ago, Japanese gamers aren't in to multiplayer online games. Rather, they prefer to play with people in person. Because multiplayer is such a big selling point for the 360, japanese gamers avoid it. To them multiplayer feels intrusive. They are in no way hating american products. They buy Ipods and other apple products like no tomorrow.

@ KCKING23 Well Namco didn't bring PS2 versions Tales of Symphonia, Tales of Rebirth, and Tales of Destiny 2 to US either so I think any hope of them bringing PS3 versions of Tales of Vesperia and Tales of Graces are out of the question. Usually unless that "Tales of" game is a PlayStation exclusive like Destiny, Legendia, and Eternia, the better port/remake itself won't come especially if it was already released for another console first. It didn't happen with Phantasia (first on Super NES), didn't even bother with Symphonia (first on GameCube), didn't even happen with Vesperia (first on Xbox 360), and probably won't with Graces (first on Wii) too. Of course there's one thing you can do, learn Japanese and import them for play since you know PS3 is region free to play any region games.

Kinda funny, mostly everyone is interested in Japan's culture whilst the Japanese doesn't even give a flip about what the hell goes on outside there borders.

Damn you Namco Bandai. Stop teasing us and release the other "Tales of" series stateside. You can start by finally releasing the true sequel of Tales of Destiny.

So has Namco Bandai followed suit with other Japenese developers and abandoned the consoles for cheaper, more profitable handheld titles? If so then that's a shame, they really don't have much competition on the consoles as far as JRPGs are concerned, though I think their games are slightly too linear for my liking they're still okay, and it's not like FFXIII wasn't linear either.

@shadowysea07 This isn't a console war is right. I own all the systems. I think you missed the entire point. BTW, nice blanket statement about Japanese people being xenophobic...sighs...You guys don't really get it do you...? BTW, plenty of small Japanese dev. teams make games on the XBOX360. In addition, there are plenty of XBOX360 fans in Japan. As I stated simply before this got silly, it is Microsoft's failure not to attract the Japanese core market with better products and understand their customers better. Japanese people have a reputation in being the second largest consumers of Western entertainment (i.e., movies, books, and music). So Japanese buying a foreign influenced or IP product is a very common act. What is you basis for your argument? These major assumptions about other country's gaming markets is exactly why some games don't get marketed outside of Japan. Always thinking you know how the other side thinks and functions. News for you my friend, you're way off...

@JPH85 you are slightly right japanese gamers don't like the xbox because they prefer home country products. they are pretty xenophobic which is sad but hey its their loss. developers work on any console they aren't biased they go where the money is and whats easier to develope on. alot of games got made for the 360 first because the tools were sent to developers faster than the ps3 not to mention its far cheaper to develope for. as for games not getting outside japan that usually takes a company to localize them which more often then not most aren't willing to. especially with sony since they have stricter rules for it.

PSP sales increased because of Tales of Phantasia and that StormLover game. Nothing good came out for the DS. Sales are low in Japan anyways. Sales in U.K and U.S. are 3-4x's greater. I'm just waiting for the 3DS. That's all I want hardware wise now. Hopefully M$ will announce their own handheld, but I don't think it'll happen until next-gen. The PSP Go was a complete failure. Why hasn't Sony pulled the plug on that thing?

@JPH85 But just because there are a bunch of games like this doesn't mean that they are of high quality. That's where the real problem lies. If they were then the sales would reflect that. Their most valiant effort was with Monster Hunter Frontier recently. And that did give a small boost in sales. However, that game is accessible easily by PC for Japanese players. Perhaps, if they worked harder on trying to truly understand the average core Japanese gamer, they'd be in a better position. On top of that, I personally know many people on my XBL that are proud Japanese XBOX360 owners. There are many out there if you look online. Everything you said in that small post just hit every stereotype about the Japanese gaming industry. Come to Japan, if you don't believe me...

@Koushin That's where you're wrong. It has more Japanese RPGs that the PS3, but the thing is that the Japanese developers like to create Japanese games on the PS3 (the games that don't even get released in the US). Japanese developers prefer to develop on a Japanese console.

Um, The PSP Go has been outsold by the 10 year old PS2. But the PSP was supposed to be the hip, new, stylish, last&greatest kick ass cool. Download only next greatest handheld system. That was to take on Apple's iphone,/ipad. Sony was to "outcool" Apple with the PSP Go. I would have to say that the PSP Go has failed. This is in Japan where they are suppose to love newish tech things. Sony the PSP Go digital download only system has now failed. It was outsold by everything else..In Japan..The Go had failed...

@looking_boy It's not that, XBOX360 doesn't support the Japanese general gamers enough (i.e., games that don't target Japanese demographics). It only attracts hardcore gamers and fans of Western games.
