Big in Japan Feb. 13-19: Binary Domain, Theatrhythm FF

Konami's dating sim New Love Plus beats out Sega's sci-fi shooter and Square Enix's RPG rhythm game for the top position; 3DS units rise in sales.

Konami's New Love Plus claimed the top spot on the recent Media Create sales update this week, placing first, with 104,969 units sold.

Love conquers all, even robots and Final Fantasy themes.
Love conquers all, even robots and Final Fantasy themes.

The Love Plus series is a dating sim where players take girls out on dates, interact with them, and get them to confess their love. The 3DS iteration features augmented-reality dates, where players can use the 3DS camera to take girls to real-life places.

Just behind Konami's title are two big releases: Sega's Binary Domain and Square Enix's Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. The former comes in at second place, with 73,683 units sold, while the latter is at third place, with 67,206 units sold.

Binary Domain is a squad-based shooter set in Tokyo in the year 2080 where robots are fighting against humans. The game is the latest project from Toshihiro Nagoshi, who is well known for his work on the Yakuza series. The shooter will be out in North American markets next week and in Asia 10 days after the former region's release date.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy is a music rhythm game where players have to hit the notes on the 3DS's touch screen in time to the beat of the song. The game features more than 50 songs from throughout the role-playing game series. There is no word from Square Enix regarding a North American and European release of the title at this point in time.

The sole PlayStation Vita title clinging on to the top 10 is Gravity Rush. The exclusive adventure title is at 10th place, with 53,680 units sold. Meanwhile, four 3DS titles had been consistently hanging on to the top 10--Mario Kart 7 at fourth place, with 22,015 units sold, and Super Mario 3D Land at fifth place, with 17,791 units sold. Capcom's Monster Hunter 3G is just below Nintendo's platformer, with 17,490 units sold, and the company's recent survival horror entry Resident Evil: Revelations is at eighth place, with 15,666 units sold.

Once again, the 3DS was the top-selling console for the week. Nintendo sold 94,667 units of the portable console. Sony's three major consoles are still on the same position: the PlayStation 3 sold 21,993 units, while the PSP sold 14,824 units. The sales for the PS Vita took a slight dip from 13,939 units to 12,309 units.

@LGAR2000 85 USD to import, plus Japanese 3DS system, as games for that system are region-locked... :s

@AznEvan The fact is there's not a whole lot to play on the vita yet and the 3Ds already has some good games, and that's just barely started. There are some pretty cool games in development for the 3Ds. Sony is gonna have to pull out some pretty rabbits out of their hats to match the 3Ds' growing library.

VITA sales are much like 3DS sales at launch time. It won't be long before both of them engage the dominance battle to the death. Poor home consoles...!

@KeleemRem I usually agree but have never been troubled by the handheld market and Nintendo's huge share of it over the last 15+ years.

@benleslie5 Did you mean slowly going down? I thought it was around 15 to 17 thousand a few weeks ago. Its good to see a system really taking off on those charts. Over 94 thousand 3DS's in a week is huge. You want proof that a system needs software (and who needs that kind of proof these days?!?) to sell well at a constant rate?

I really hope the Vita starts picking up. No matter how nice Nintendo is, monopolization is never a good thing.

There's something thats been bugging me for the past few days, considering that a sony representative acknowledged that the vita's launch line up was more akin to western tastes begs the question why didn't they go against convention of releasing the vita in japan and released it in the western demographics first? Surely with a list of launch titles more akin to western tastes it would seen the best option and would gives devs more time to prepare games more suited for japanese tastes.

@wiidsduelpack i would say yes and no, usually the successor would be steadily climbing up against if predecessor to the point where sales of predecessor would fall while the successor maintains a steady growth. On the other hand, the vita outpaced the psp one week but the numbers are going down on the vita with the psp gradually maintaining a higher sales volume so I'd say the psp is the one that is actually eating into potential vita sales at the moment. (probably will change once titles more akin to Japanese tastes are released on the vita.)

I thought under 14K in last weeks sales was bad for the Vita but they are even worse this week. Surely there has to be a floor on how low they can go. Problem is that I still haven't seen any announced titles that are going to save this system in Japan. Maybe Persona 4 will give it a couple good weeks. No Monster Hunter announced yet but even if there were, MH4 is a 3DS exclusive so I don't know what good it would do in the long run. When Nintendo announces Pokemon Grey for the 3DS I think you can pretty much say Japan is their's again. Hopefully for Sony's sake the system will be popular in Europe and NA but IMO it has fundamental problems. Price and it is incomplete hardware. Sony made a big mistake not including a memory card from the factory.

Not looking good for Sony.I mean I can easily see more than half of the software in top 10 being games for nintendo platforms when more must-buys like LM2 or KIU(and many many more) gets released. And it looks like the article about Japan devs jumping ship from VITA to 3DS is going to be true since most 3rd party games which are solid games are selling very well for 3DS.Hope to see even more devs making games for the 3DS. :)

The Vita is eating away PSP sales. Does not seem like a failure. With the right games, it will become successful.

@AznEvan That, and how well these system do in Japan is not necessarily an indication of how well it will do here. I'm relieved that the 3DS has picked up (hope it keeps going) and I really want the PSVita to do well too ( Fanboys take note: a handheld market with both a healthy 3DS AND PSVita is a win for all of us!)

Okay 3DS fans, before you go on and rabble about how great the 3DS is over the Vita, I just want to say that Love Plus, Monster Hunter, and Mario for the 3DS is a huge part of why it's really successful in Japan at the moment. I'm liking both the 3DS and Vita for what they offer for gamers alike!

Still waiting for Konami to release Love Plus over here. Don't make the homebrew community do it for you, Konami.
