Big in Japan July 5-11: Wii Party, White Knight Chronicles 2

Nintendo's latest minigame collection tops the charts in debut week, with Level Five's action RPG close behind; Crackdown 2 debuts in seventh place.

It's too early to tell if Nintendo's Wii Party is the latest in a long line of evergreen hits for the company, but the minigame collection is certainly a quick bloomer. According to Media Create's Japanese sales charts, Wii Party was the best-selling game in the country for the week of July 5-11, selling nearly 235,000 copies.

Ain't no party like a Nintendo Wii Party 'cause a Nintendo Wii Party don't stop.
Ain't no party like a Nintendo Wii Party 'cause a Nintendo Wii Party don't stop.

Wii Party is Nintendo's first stab at the genre for the Wii since 2007's Mario Party 8, which has sold more than 7.6 million units worldwide. The game, which is set for North American launch this holiday season, will feature 13 different game modes and more than 70 individual minigames.

Second place for the week went to Shirokishi Monogatari: Hikari to Yami no Kakusei, or White Knight Chronicles 2, which sold more than 175,000 copies. The PlayStation 3-exclusive action role-playing game marks the second release for RPG specialist Level Five in as many weeks. The studio's previous release, Inazuma Eleven 3 (in Spark and Bomber varieties) debuted atop the previous week's charts and placed third for July 5-11 with nearly 98,000 games sold.

Two more new releases made the upper echelon of the sales charts for the week. Marvelous Entertainment's latest Harvest Moon title, Bokujou Monogatari: Futago no Mura for the DS, finishing in fourth place with 63,610 copies sold. Further down the list in seventh was a rare appearance by an Xbox 360 game courtesy of Crackdown 2, which sold a little less than 15,000 copies.

It was mostly business as usual on the hardware charts, with the DSi LL (known in the West as the DSi XL) securing the top spot once again with 28,916 systems sold. Bolstered by the launch of Wii Party, Nintendo's console edged out the PSP to land in second place with 24,604 systems sold, fewer than 200 units ahead of Sony's portable.

"why they decided to make wii party over mario party 9 is beyond me." Probably because Nintendo finally decided to end it after the awful Mario Party 8 and witnessing the declining quality of the games after the N64 Generation that Dudson has done nothing to prevent despite superior hardware on the Gamecube and Wii. Just because something sells well doesn't make it good. See... Mario & Sonic Olympics series. Any Sonic game over the past ten years.

Well when the 3DS hits the US market I'm buying one for sure. Has all the features I want and non of the crap I hate. Plus the line up of games has enough hardcore, and casual titles to keep me going for a long time to come. I also like the optional 3D without Glasses!

@Ult_gam3r... you mean no one told you? Video games should never, ever, be fun. They should be gruelling and punish failure, like Ikaruga. Or be time-sinks that make you question the nature and concept of time, like Everquest.

My question: Why do people act like one new party game is going to kill the gaming industry? Just because it isn't a shooter or an intense action game doesn't mean it should be automatically hated. Video games were made to be FUN in the first place. I know Wii has a lot of "mini game" games, but they are all options; it's not required to enjoy your Wii. There is still a good amount of normal games out there that will make Wii still fun to play.

Teknicz: I wish gamespot had some more news on it. I had honestly not even heard of a 2nd game before now. I can't believe it's so close to release as well.

Where do we find info on Shirokishi Monogatari 2? Game releases 2nd in Japan and I love Level 5 stuff, but there's next to no information on the game on Gamespot.

daman246, unfortunately, alot of people and even younger people want games they can come home to and unwind after a hectic or stressful day at work ir school. Or even a messede up family life. These games may just give them what they need...stress relief or time to unwind. I agree a little with what you said about some people and why come they dont want challenging games, but for myself included in the first group, i want a good, fairly simple game I can enjoy and not have to stres myself over trying to figure out how to do something or get from point a to b or what I need to do to make character x do this or make that happen. I just want simple, easy to follow games to unwind after work. SOme puzzle-element in games is good though.

@daman246 what is wrong with people is that people want to play fun games and wii got fun games, just because you might think they are simple does not mean they are to others and just if they were simple does not mean that they are not fun

wii party looks actually fun probably why it sold good in japan (or that's what I would think). next up the dsi ll. I'm suprised that sold well because it defeats the purpose of portable gaming (well i guess i'm wrong). finally the psp go. it's really doing bad because it's not that great.

@wiidsduelpack Honestly, if you think killzone3 is a "casual" game you might wanna rethink how you lable your games good sir. Its like saying Gears of War should be rated T for comic mischief and chainsaw shinnanigans.

Wii Party is a casual game that's suppose to compete with other casual games like Kinectanimals and Killzone 3.

I find it funny when people's comments get marked down a lot for supporting "Casual" games. I noticed that for quite a while now. Video games are video games, people. XD Oh well, I still want to "try" Wii Party.

I sure hope WKC is actually good, unlike its predecessor, which had some potential but fell quite short of it. Good to see the PS3 doing well, disappointing to see the Wii doing well. It's also nice seeing the PSP Go do so badly, let this be a lesson to those who wish to make all video games downloadable.
