Big in Japan Nov. 29-Dec. 5: Monster Hunter Portable 3

Capcom's latest action RPG dominates Media Create chart with nearly 2 million in opening-week sales; PSP benefits with 323,653 systems sold.

Gran Turismo 5 flew off the shelves upon its debut in Japan, but the game's 430,000-unit first-week sales pale in comparison to the top seller for November 29-December 5. Proving the ongoing popularity of the series in Japan, Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 3 for the PSP dominated Media Create's software sales chart for the period, selling a staggering 1,950,717 in less than seven days.

Capcom strikes platinum again with Monster Hunter Portable 3.

As for Gran Turismo 5, Polyphony Digital's sim racer sputtered on its second lap, dropping to fifth on Media Create's chart with 55,682 units sold. Two new titles jumped ahead of it--Namco Bandai's Tales of Graces F and Nintendo's Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem--while Mario Sports Mix put in another solid showing with 59,007 units sold.

The back half of Media Create's top 10 chart for the week also had a handful of debuts. Hudson's Momotaro Electric Railway World on the DS sold 45,126 units, a figure that just outpaced the PSP and Wii versions of Namco Bandai's Kamen Rider Climax Heroes OOO, which finished a respective ninth and 10th.

Monster Hunter Portable 3 proved to be a boon for Sony's PSP, which has enjoyed a healthy sales run throughout the year. During the week, some 323,653 PSPs were sold to Japanese consumers. That figure is a far cry from the second-place Wii, which sold 56,095 units during the month. The PlayStation 3 shifted 41,760 units during the month, followed by Nintendo's DSi handheld duo. The Xbox 360 finished the week with 3,497 units sold.

I gotta say, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is one awesome and beautiful game for the PSP. I will certainly consider getting this when it comes out June/July next year. Even though it has a lot more Japanese content in it, it is still Monster Hunter.

English Tales of Grace please. Or even better, English Tales of Graces and Tales of Vesperia together on a single blu-ray. That one would be a seller.

Japans top sellers list hasn't changed for 20 years. Same old stuff. Aren't Japanese gamers interested in trying something a little different for a change?

not surprised togf sold that many considering its a great rpg, on a system thats rpg starved, is a complete tales game unlike the wii version. most people knew the game was gonna be ported after vesperia fiasco and since almost all tales games get ported so they didn't bother with buying the wii version.

It is always interesting that Monster Hunter didn't sell well in the west. I like Monster Hunter Tri on Wii but it seems that when it comes to this franchise it always fell short of expectation in the west...

this just shows that how Japanese Industry can't expand westward due to difference tastes in games. in NA we are more about multiplayer online CoD, MMO is just some of them. where as in Japan the people like portable games like MH. MH is not so popular in NA however NA's Asian community loves that game. In Chinatown NYC, u go there and mad people play MH if they are on handheld... mY friend is a good example he spend over 300 On MH 2G his unlce clocked in 500 hours.... thats how much time I put into CoD MW2 with their combine hours of over 800 hours....

@wiidsduelpack No.............Most series spend more time in Japan before it comes to america, Like the pokemon series, the professor layton series, the ace attorney series and many more. Monster Hunter tri for wii is a great addition to the series. There isnt a release date for the American Version of Pokemon Black and white yet and its been in japan for a long time. Monster Hunter Portable 3 is probably coming, we just gotta wait

@maverick_76 I suppose that part is true. The west to theme is like a refreshing holiday resort away from the sophisticated world lol. Although all that about baseball, jeans and etc is "us" from a Americans point of view. As far as I can gather the only reason they come to Sweden is to eat meatballs :P

if you think these figures are crazy, check out the number of 360's sold after MH Frontier came out. practically a third of their population bought one.

@maverick_76: I agree, i think it's a pretty mutual relationship. They borrow some of our culture (sports, food, and the such) and we do the same. Mainly in the way of kick-ass games, anime, and electronic gadgets. :P Actually we actually borrow some of their words too, there's certain terms and words in American English that come from Japanese.

...And Namco still keeps the Tales games in Japan, even though the demand for them in the US is rising to the fullest. I think they're just saying to themselves " These Americans don't want great RPG's, they want crummy budget titles!" BTW, good job Capcom.

@WarioBro64 I remember they were going to make a special edition of PSP with a skin of Monster Hunter. I think that's why it's selling like that.

I always just find the 360 sales hilarious, not because I hate XBOX or anything, just that it is so far behind everything else is ridiculous. I wonder if Microsoft would do good to offer free online over in Japan, that could possibly move more boxes.
