Although Battleborn may not have sold up to Take-Two's expectations, developer Gearbox Software is not backing away from the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC shooter. Today, October 13, the game receives a lot of new content, enough to make today the biggest day ever for its post-launch DLC.

First up, Battleborn gets its first story operation, Attikus and the Thrall Rebellion, while a new competitive mode in Face-Off has also been introduced.

Now Playing: Battleborn - Attikus and the Thrall Rebellion Trailer

"Since Battleborn's launch, we've striven to improve and expand the game with free characters, maps, broadcaster tools, and many other updates, continuing the promise we made of developing free content post-launch for our community," publisher 2K said in a statement. "We continue to deliver on that promise with today's release of Face-Off, an exciting new free competitive multiplayer mode that will test the skills of both PVE and PVP players alike."

A multi-phase 5v5 mode, Face-Off sees players hunting down Varelsi. Players will collect their masks deposit them near the center of the map to earn points. This won't be a walk in the park, however, as the opposing side will try to kill you and steal the masks for themselves. The first team to 500 points wins. You can read more about the Face-Off mode, which is free, in this blog post.

As for the story chapter, Attikus and the Thrall Rebellion is included with the $20 Battleborn season pass or can be purchased for $5 on its own. It "tells the story of Attikus and what motivated him to fight in the Thrall uprising through the slums of the planet, Tempest."

Players can also expect new skins, taunts, and opportunities to earn more Faction Commander Packs. 2K said the new story operation is "highly replayable" in part because the dialogue, enemies, and objectives will be different depending on how you play. Players are also encouraged to replay the mission, as they can unlock more skins, titles, taunts, and lore details every time, 2K said.

In other news about Battleborn, a recent report claimed the game was switching to a free-to-play business model. This may not be the case, however, though Gearbox could offer a free version.
